He walked me through what needed to be done before he arrived and what I needed when he got there. He was prompt, polite and the service and install was outstanding!! Not only would I recommend him for service I plan to use him for all my future plumbing needs!!

I am extremely pleased with the entire job. After installing the dry wall, I wanted to paint before finishing the floor. They held off on finishing the job for two days. An act of kindness I don't believe most in a-hurry-to-complete contractors would have afforded me.

I used Thumbtack for the first time, and needed laminate flooring put down in our baby room. GB Construction, Emmanuel, responded first. We talked over the phone, he was very professional, and even came out that same evening to see the layout of the room. His quote was very reasonable, and him and Raul completed the project. They were time efficient and cleaned up well afterward. I would definitely use them again for future projects, and would recommend their work.

I am 63 years, have owned five houses and must have dealt with over 100 contractors over the years. I have to say that the project Marius completed for me has been the most positive experience I've ever had with a contractor. He started by replying to my proposal within 10 minutes, quickly understood what we wanted done, and two days later arrived early to start work on it. He worked efficiently and meticulously to install shelving above the door in our garage, handling all the details from purchasing the right materials to carefully cleaning up afterwards, and the end result looks fantastic. He also took the initiative to make suggestions to improve the project in inexpensive ways that I couldn't have imagined. And besides all this his price was very reasonable. Thanks Marius (and Thumbtack) for making this a great experience. Five stars just isn't enough.

Remove tile from existing fireplace and replace with stone. Frame out kitchen island with wainscoting. Garret and his team were very efficient, on time and had attention to details. The projects performed were redo's from the housing contractor who did shotty work, walls not flushed, etc. SOTA was very meticulous in making sure everything met up correctly and looked they way it should. They kept the areas cleaned and made sure to clean up after themselves. Stayed late to get the project completed. I would use them again in a heart beat and recommend them for interior improvements.

I recently purchased a home and had numerous remodeling projects. Osbaldo repainted the interior of my house, installed crown molding, installed new bedroom doors, remodeled the bathroom, converted my dryer hookup to gas, remodeled my closets and installed granite and back-splash in the kitchen. Osbaldo is a good, trustworthy person. He is a hard worker and takes the time to make sure the job is done right. He really has a good eye for what looks nice in a home and had great remodeling suggestions. Plus, his prices are very fair. I will definitely be using him again for any more work I need on the house!

These guys are real pros! My company moved into a new office which we remodeled in just a few months. The only challenge we faced was the flooring. The cheap green commercial carpet completely ruined our sleek modern interior design. I was astonished when I tried hiring three different flooring companies and was told that they are either too busy for a $12K project or are not qualified enough for a job like that. I could not believe that it's so difficult to find a good flooring specialist! I saw an ad for Spectrum One, Inc. and called them for a free estimate. To be honest, I did not expect much since the company appeared too big for a commercial remodeling. I was surprised when Paul, the owner, told me that they can easily do it. Their prices were very competitive and they were done with the job in just a few days. My office looks phenomenal! I highly recommend them!!!

KGA Construction was AWESOME! First, Gennadiy was the only contractor who was available for a small job. The tree trimmer hit my t1-11 siding right on the seam so I only needed one panel replaced. My gas line had to be shut off and removed and Gennadiy worked around PG&E's schedule for the disconnect. Second, Gennadiy did an excellent job of replacing the siding. Third, Gennadiy was very polite and professional. I can't say enough good things about Gennadiy. I am so happy Gennadiy was the contractor who did my job.

I meet with Brian today. My need is to convert a tub/shower to a shower only for my son who will be returning from a deployment. My project changed after contacting Insight and I sent a message to say I had additional needs. Quick response which is always helpful. Brian did show and showed on time. He gave me many options to keep the project price under control. I can purchase all materials or he can purchase for me. I like the options. He gave me an overview and took time to answer my questions. I am waiting his estimate currently. So many Contractors do not show or its not worth their time yet they do not let the customer know that is the situation. I feel Brian will respond with an estimate as promised. I am really most impressed with Brian and hope I have found a contractor that I can use long term future projects :).

Mark is absolutely amazing! I wish all contractors could be like him. He is professional, friendly, very courteous, and his work is beautiful. I hired him to make custom cabinets for the bathrooms and he walked me through each step to customize my design. When he was unable to find a matching color for the countertop, he contacted a company he works with so I could look through pieces of granite and find a match. He installed the cabinets this weekend and the workmanship is beautiful. Solid wood, matching stain, and soft closing drawers. The price is on point as well. I would venture to guess that something of this size would be about the same price at Ikea, or some other cheap furniture place that uses particle board and laminate. I will be using Mark for all my custom woodwork needs - and there will be plenty.

Pedro Felix, SFE, Electric Inc., is the most knowledgeable, professional, efficient, intelligent and creative electrician I have ever hired in over 30 years of homeownership and remodeling. If I could give 10 starts, I would! Pedro is punctual and on the minute in scheduling and updating arrival times. His work is direct and clean and he is careful and respectful of one's home. I have never had an electrician carefully and succinctly explain issues as well. Pedro even emailed links to me so that I could choose the style of switches and outlets I liked best - believe me, this can be an overwhelming process otherwise. Pedro purchased most of what we needed at a good price. Best of all, Pedro was able to figure out a way that met all electrical codes to hang a fixture on a sloped ceiling with no access above by pulling wires. Two prior electricians proposed chopping open the ceiling and wall down to an outlet and one said it couldn't be done. Pedro was also able to trouble shoot problems we were having with outdoor lighting and he got our existing outlets and lights working. Again, previous electricians couldn't figure out what to do. Pedro is THE BEST! I give him the best recommendation possible.

After months of searching for the right contractor to do our remodel of our master bath,we found pacific and the process and the way they handle and do remodels is genius, we just finshed with them about a week ago , and I am beyond happy with the finshed product. Moran and his team kept me informed and involed in the process the whole time , not everything little thing he came to me with , only decision they he knew i would want to make , I selected who i wanted to do the work, i knew everything up front , i wasnt hit with a bill after. Or change orders. and after a bad kitchen refacing( with another company ) that took months and tons of problems , I was kinda scared to countitue , but Pacific gave me my joy back , I will forever be thankful for the time and energy moran put into the project.

We were looking to remodel 3 bathrooms. After talking to 3 contractors we chose BMT Builders. Project became larger and took more time due to several issues. Overall we are very satisfied and would not hesitate to use BMT again. In fact we hired BMT again to repair another section of the house months later.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
