Jose was the first to respond to our job for leveling the kitchen floor and laying our new wood floor. He showed up when he said he would and gave a fair price. He also completed the job on time. We are very happy with the job he did, and we will be using him for our master bath. I will leave that review once that job is done.

I recently purchased a home and needed several jobs done, ranging from simple to complex. I needed shelves put up in the laundry room, a new mailbox, rafters in the garage, bathroom shower installed, doorbells on both front and back doors, screen door for the patio, hanging (and leveling!) wall decorations, outside wooden fence general maintenance, and more! Once the weather breaks they are to come back and assemble a gas grill, fix a downspout, fix an outside light, and other jobs I have for them. They are professional, neat, very affordable. I have and will recommend them very highly! In the meantime, I will be adding to my list of things I need done!

Jordan as a person was very nice. His inital follow up was prompt and he spoke very highly of his attention to detail. As a first time homeowner, I know little about construction and heavily rely on the expert knowledge of others to assist with our remodel. We hired Jordan after meeting three other contractors based solely on our interaction with him. When we originally had Jordan out to our house it was for a flooring quote only. Jordan explained he also preformed landscaping work on the side so we added that to our list. Jordan did an amazing job installing the floors! The entire dynamic of the house changed because of the floors. I was very disappointed in a few other areas which is the reason for 4 stars. We do not currently live in the house although we do have a few items in place for weekend visits. Towards the end of the job Jordan said that they were mostly finished so I had gone to check out the progress. The tile work in both bathrooms is crooked. The master bath is very noticeable. In addition, my bedding was covered in dust and they had smeared grout into the carpet in my bedroom. There was also sloppy grouting and caulking done in several areas of my home. To add insult to injury his crew decided it was ok to help themselves to my kids popcicles - this actually upset me just asuch as the tile floor. Giving credit where it is due: Jordan and Tim did have my carpets cleaned, my bedding dry cleaned and I was given the option to have them rip up the bathroom floor or receive a discount from my final bill. Jordan did offer to replace the missing popcicles as well although that never did happen. The landscape looks nice as well but we asked to keep the remaining turf and that also didn't happen. I asked jordan about it and he said what was salvageable was in our shed - it wasnt. Again, I was very happy with the floors but the other items make it hard to say if I would rehire for additional projects. Nice guy but I didn't feel like our home was cared for in the way he said it would be. If you do decide to hire Jordan my recommendations would be: 1. Get a detailed breakdown of the work 2. Notate about the use of your personal items (they completely filled up both our garbage cans) 3. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect. Check every corner.

Tom, We are very pleased with the remodel of our two bathrooms. Everything we planned, colors, lighting, custom cabinets, counter tops, sinks, toilets, Jacuzzi tub, shower, pocket doors and hardware came together and created the dream baths we had hoped for. Our remodel required gutting two bathrooms and changing a bathroom with a shower into a Jacuzzi tub and a bathroom with bath tub into a shower. Because of this, we greatly appreciated working with you to improve on our initial designs and your suggestions of more cost effective ways to implement them. We also appreciated your willingness and ability to follow through with various changes we made as the job progressed. We were always pleased to see your employees arrive, as they were all about doing the best for us each day. They came to the job clean and ready to work with a positive attitude. They are highly skilled professionals and they were always accommodating, in working with us to meet our needs. We kind of miss seeing them now that the job is completed. It was a pleasure to have you and your employees remodel our bathrooms. You were truly Innovative in meeting our remodel design needs. We highly recommend your company, We’re Innovative, for all remodeling. John and Cathy

Thumbtack introduced Patrick to me within 60 minutes of posting my project (a fireplace renovation). We met early the next day and were so impressed with his knowledge, attitude and availability that we hired him on the spot. Our project began almost immediately and was completed within the week. We showed him a picture of what we were looking for and he and his co-worker replicated it to a "T". We found his work excellent, his attitude positive and wouldn't hesitate to hire him again or to recommend him to others.

Ours was a huge job that was a complete master bath remodel. Jeff moved plumbing and built a new, much larger shower with all of the bells and whistles - 3 soap boxes, a hardwired heated shower mirror, rain head, body sprayers, hand-held sprayer, linear channel drain, and shower seat. He also repositioned the plumbing and installed a deep soaking tub and a new Toto G500 integrated washlet toilet. All of the wet area walls were tiled in travertine with red onyx accent. He did all of the work himself, and the tile work is the best I have ever seen. Additionally, Jeff built a custom linen tower, medicine cabinet, vanity tower and lighted soffit. Everything turned out beautiful! The only thing that I could say could have gone better was the length of the job. It took nine weeks to complete, which was much longer than the original estimate. However, given the size of our job and the fact that Jeff, himself, did all of the tile work, plumbing, carpentry and electrical, I really have no right to complain. We also added a new wood-look tile and new lighting fixtures in a guest bathroom to the scope of work, which added to the completion time. Although he was not the lowest bid we received, his pricing was fair. The reason I chose Jeff was his obvious skill with tile, and I was certainly right about that decision. As a final note, I was impressed that Jeff and his assistant made sure to clean up at the end of every day, so there was minimal "mess distress" during construction.

Reach out to Freedom to get estimate on the kitchen and flooring in the beginning. Alex and Allen came out to my house and make a measure of what my house need to be done. they answered all the questions I have on the spot, suggested me what I should pay attention in terms of picking materials, and gave me detail run down of how their company procedure is on the project. I received their estimate which is very detail and professional after two days they visited my house. I went thru every items on the estimate with my husband, and clarify couple questions about the estimate with Freedom. They have responded directly on the questions and were not trying to hind anything from us. After couples, my husband and me have compared couple companies and their profile. We decided to go with Freedom. After we have signed the contract, we knew we didn't make a wrong decision on this one. Freedom is very organized and on-time company. They have scheduled everything of how every section will be done, notified us not to step or touch the area they just finished and make sure every items we should know about the work they performed. After three weeks of remodeling, we did not worry a thing and the construction was so smooth in terms of work and time. Before Freedom close the project, we did a final walk thru of the job, the work quality is just fabulous and well-finished. We are so happy and satisfy on how they professionally get this project down. I have attached one of the finished pic for everyone to take a look at how beautiful this job has be done. Freedom is highly recommended from us as example and we will recommend Freedom to all of my family members and friends. Again, thanks a lot, Freedom.

One day we wandered into Morena and found ourselves talking with Kate about remodeling our bathrooms and possibly our kitchen. She suggested sending John out to appraise the labor cost. Soon we had John, Sami and Mike in our home and a discussion started about all the things we would like and to our amazement we were assured that they could do it all. We were pleased that we could have all the work done without having to shop for additional contractors. We agreed to refinish the kitchen cabinets, replace the kitchen island counter, install a new hood over the cooktop, reface a fireplace, extensive remodel and update of two bathrooms, repaint most of the interior of the house and re-polish all the travertine flooring. Immediately we had a bevy of workmen starting cabinet refinishing, wall and ceiling painting. Work was continuous to completion. Sami was very helpful by suggesting and selecting materials that resulted in a pleasant decor. All problems, which were minor, were corrected in a timely fashion. We were very pleased with the work that Morena Home Design did for us.

I needed a new fence carpenter to build a fence and add a wall inside my home that was being remodeled. The fence looked beautiful and the wall was done well so I decided to ask if they also did bathroom or kitchen remodeling work. Bill said that he had a wide range of work he could perform or manage for me so I started small and had them redo a small bathroom. The bathroom work included cabinets, bathtub, shower walls, new travertine floor and painting. After the bathroom was complete and saving up for a few weeks we moved on to the kitchen. He assisted in the design and layout with the designer. The work took several weeks but it was beautiful and was much better than the drawings. After several months of work on my home, it is perfect with there help. I can't thank them enough and will pass there info on to friends.

I was fortunate to find Preece Contracting Services -- a recommendation from my next door neighbor -- following a natural disaster. At a time when prices could have been inflated due to supply and demand pressures I was charged very reasonably for excellent repair work. This led to working with Preece on additional kitchen remodeling work to great satisfaction. A thoroughly satisfied customer.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
