Zarif showed up on time as promised and installed a replacement bathroom fan. The job was completed to my satisfaction. There was an issue with the wiring to the fan installed by the previous homeowner that Zarif also took care of for me.

We decided to get our bathroom vanities refinished instead of replaced. I'm so pleased with the decision, since they came out beautiful. Scott was very accomodating when I chose two color samples that I ended up not liking. He took the initiative to consult a color specialist for the perfect brown, which is amazing. Scott is a nice guy who does nice work.

David did a great job installing my new master bath vanity & tile backsplash. He re-did a plumbing issue & never made anything seem impossible. I live in an older mobile home & they are not constructed as traditional homes so David improvised on the tile backsplash confidently. He made decor suggestions that turned out great. I’m very happy with the results. Thanks again David! Before & After

Hired Muller Plumbing to replace supply lines for a kitchen sink, a tub and a bathroom sink. Bob was professional, timely and explained what he would do and the job was done exactly how he said it would be. I would definitely hire them again.

Nick has been a pleasure to work with. I've hired him on two separate occasions and he was awesome in both plumbing and electrical projects/issues. Nick replaced three toilets, and then next time he replaced my kitchen faucet, bathroom shower head, and four light fixtures to update the look in my kitchen. I would/will hire him again soon. I highly recommend Nick; and he's also a genuinely nice person!

I cannot rave enough about the service I received today from Aaron Massella. He was prompt to communicate and willing to come to my home immediately. Here is what happened... The Problem: I had a random loss of power in one bedroom and the bathroom next it and the switch on my breaker box for that room was sluggish. I called up a couple different electricians, and I had my assistant get quotes from some other ones. They were all expensive and had sour attitudes. I then went to Thumbtack, and didn't love the first message I got (quote was expensive and vague), so I then read Aaron’s message. He sounded efficient so I called him up. On the phone, he was so friendly, so efficient, and talked me through the problem. He then gave him his rates clearly: one hour of troubleshooting rate, rate after troubleshooting, and emergency rate (service RIGHT NOW). I loved how clear, informative and friendly he was so I booked him for 8am this morning. He then showed up EXACTLY on time and got to work figuring it out, getting the facts, and educating me the whole time. I cannot emphasize enough how much I appreciate his education of what he was doing step by step. The Diagnosis: a bit of plastic broke on a mini circuit breaker, and the wire had loss connection to the switch. I have an old Zinsco breaker box so if I wanted to replace the mini, I would have had to get a whole breaker box or hunt down this obsolete part. He said I most definitely don't need to get a new breaker box - we can still use the mini because, besides the bit of plastic, it's in fantastic shape, not a danger, and just needs to be reconnected. I LOVE that he said this because I hate wasting a perfectly fine breaker box and I don't want to spend money I don't need to. What a difference from the building handy man I had come in and say I should definitely get a new one just because mine is old. In the end, with education and all, he fixed it in less than 45 minutes. He even provided an extremely detailed receipt of the work he did. I ADORE DETAILS. Last amazing thing about him, he drives a truck filled with obsolete parts for people like me with very old circuit breakers. He didn't have the one I needed, but he still has a ton. Summary: If I could, I would give Massella Electric 10 stars. I am literally in the best mood and glowing from his fantastic service. Thank you Aaron for the thorough education, reasonable price, detailed receipt, and fantastic attitude!

Ryan responded very quickly to my Thumbtack inquiry for toilet installation almost immediately with a competitive quote. He was available to do the work immediately as well, and ended up doing the job on a Sunday morning which was very convenient for me. He did excellent work, was conscientious about doing it right, and made sure everything worked properly before leaving. He also came up with a creative solution for an unexpected issue. I would definitely hire him again.

Joe did an awesome job! He was very responsive and was able to come to my house on the day I needed him. I had a list projects for Joe to do and he was able to fix everything in a timely matter. He even noticed a few loose items in my bathroom and he fixed them at no charge without me even knowing it. I look forward to working with Joe again in the future.

The owner of Rios Custom Carpentry, Erik, was very courteous & knowledgeable in what my husband & I wanted done, which was repainting our backyard shed's roof, repainting one of our bathrooms' vanity & medicine cabinet, & repainting the master bedroom's bathroom ceiling this past month (March of 2018). Since he did an excellent job on those projects, we re-hired him to repaint all of the doors & door frames inside our house!

I needed a new fence carpenter to build a fence and add a wall inside my home that was being remodeled. The fence looked beautiful and the wall was done well so I decided to ask if they also did bathroom or kitchen remodeling work. Bill said that he had a wide range of work he could perform or manage for me so I started small and had them redo a small bathroom. The bathroom work included cabinets, bathtub, shower walls, new travertine floor and painting. After the bathroom was complete and saving up for a few weeks we moved on to the kitchen. He assisted in the design and layout with the designer. The work took several weeks but it was beautiful and was much better than the drawings. After several months of work on my home, it is perfect with there help. I can't thank them enough and will pass there info on to friends.

I would highly recommend Pedro. I hired him to install a new backsplash (and remove/demo the existing) and re-frame the kitchen window. He was even able to save some of the granite strip for the window sill. He also came back on a Saturday to do some final touch-ups. I have attached some photos so you can see the quality of his work. He also charges a very reasonable rate. I would not hesitate to hire Pedro again (and probably will)!

Juan one-handedly remodeled on of my bathroom floor and vanity. He was courteous, diligent, and very personable. He wanted to ensure I was satisfied every step of the remodel. If I were to remodel again and want true workmanship than Juan is your man. Thank you for turning my 1970's bathroom to a modern, hotel-like. For sure this is our "guest bathroom" with all the amenities. Juan was also willing to take on a very hard vinyl fence replacement, basically correcting a mistake and accomplished a pretty hard goal. I look forward to working with him again and recommend him 100%.

Nick replaced our master bath tile/shower surround including demo of old surround, raising shower head, replacing fixtures, adding new cement board, and adding new tile surround. We selected a classic white tile with glass inlay since that bathroom is fairly small and it would've been too much to have big tiles all the way to the ceiling. He was very easy to work with, very fair in his estimate, very clean and neat, cleaned up his mess at the end of each workday so we could still use our room, was great at brainstorming with me and flexible to adjust our design as we adjusted some minor things along the way, finished on time, and was very respectful to our family and our time as he worked in our home. I look forward to having Nick help us with other projects in the future. I highly recommend you give him a chance – – I think you will be happy you did.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
