Joyee Lin at Thinque Prep was the one who helped me get a perfect score on my ACT last year. Since then, he's guided me through a lot of decisions that I needed to make to help me be competitive for college. Certain decisions that I didn't even think would matter, he was able to forewarn me about. He has also been giving me really great ideas to help me with my essay. I'm so happy to have met him and strongly recommend him to anybody who needs help with test prep and college!

My daughter needed a tutor for sat and act prep this year. We recently contacted Andrea and she responded quickly and was able to setup a time to meet within the week. Both Andrea and her son met with my wife and daughter for two hours. Her son the tutor is really kind and scored really well on his own sat/act. After one visit my wife was really impressed with Andrea. She spent the whole two hours talking with her. One of the most incredible things is Andrea is also helpful in guiding my daughter in the college process. Explaining to her and my wife what looks good to colleges in your portfolio.

Mr. Vialardi is a very patient teacher and very knowledgeable. Before we hired him, we hired one of the teachers but my son detected right away that the one we got does mot know much about the subject. Then We hired Mr. Vialardi. My son is a very quiet person and takes time before anyone can make him open up. After a couple of 2 hour sessions with Mr. Vialardi, my son shows sign that he likes him and that he knows a lot. He also like the patience and softness of his voice when he is explaining the steps and doing analyses. At first my son was very skeptical about tutoring but Mr. Vialardi has his way of getting into him and making my son comfortable. Being under his tutoring, he was able to pass his AP Calculus test and all his AP Calculus subjects will be credited to the university he will enrolling this summer. We are rehiring Mr. Vialardi because we wanted my son to have a solid foundation in Math when he enters college this summer. Mr. Vialardi is a great asset to your organization because his main goal is to help every student excel in their studies that would prepare them in their future careers. Joseph & Suzanne Dee

I started working with Stable Genius Prep in January to prepare for the General GRE. We assessed right away that the Quantitative material was my weak spot, and where I'd need the most help. I'm the type of person who really has to be able to understand something before I can master it, and I don't naturally think mathematically. In other words I can't just memorize formulae and when to apply them. Andrew was excellent with this. Even when I got answers right, he would make sure to go over with me what the principles were behind the problem. He has clearly had much experience tutoring pupils. Perhaps what had the most impact on me, and on my desire to work hard, was the patience he exhibited; it may have not even registered with him, but I noticed it. In the beginning I worked at an excruciatingly slow pace through everything from Arithmetic to Statistics and Probability. It took two hours just to get through ten problems. By the end of our prep, I was able to work through the same number of questions in about 15-20 minutes, and at a high level of difficulty. While my essay writing is normally solid, it was difficult to exhibit that within the 30 minute time limit. Andrew reviewed my practice essays with me and really helped me to develop strategies to write strong essays that follow the test instructions within the time allotted. Ultimately my Math score went from the 48th percentile up to the 83rd percentile! I couldn't be happier with my experience, and with the results we were able to get. I say "we" because by the end I felt like we were a team, with Andrew as my coach. He is a master of the material, and he understands how to teach it effectively. I definitely recommend Stable Genius Prep to anyone looking not only to get over a certain threshold, but to really maximize their potential and do as well as they possibly can!

Daniel goes over every aspect of the ACT and focuses on the student's strengths and weaknesses. It is an individualized approach without the inconvenience, distraction and stress of a classroom environment. My daughter, Lea, found the sessions very useful for her history class and SAT prep. She had little idea of the SAT to start, but she now had a significant score increase and we're looking to take our last SAT this August. I highly recommend him if you're looking for a tutor who will help your student for a longer term.

Brian was an excellent tutor. Our time with him was reatively short because the test my daughter was preparing for was canceled, but I would defenitely use Brian again if we need additional tutoring. He was knowledgeable, worked well with my daugther who is 13 and was always on time. He also worked for the entire time and never cut the lesson short. We defenitely got what we paid for.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

    • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
    • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
    • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
    • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
