Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Eric did a wonderful job on the evaluation of our dog for training and behavior modification. We were very impressed with his knowledge of pertinent training techniques and dog behavioral issue. He was friendly, courteous and our dog interacted with him very well. We will be working with him on a weekly basis and are excited to see positive results.

I went to K9 Krossfit for an evaluation and it was great. I got one on one time with the trainer and my dog. We both realized my dog is pretty well behaved, just bad habits, I appreciated his candor and told me that training my dog would not require a lot of work. Price were very reasonable.

Tammy has been fantastic to work with. She still takes the time regularly to train humans after our super hyperactive dogs board and train - and we are so glad that we went with Tammy. Looking forward to a much better relationship between our dog and us, thanks to Tammy.

Naomi with Along Came a Dog has been an integral part of my dog’s training process. I adopted an older but young spirited MinPin- Zoe— about 6 weeks ago and she’s a delightful sweet dog but lacked some standard training and has a few challenges. Due to the COVID shelter in place mandate we were unable to set up normal in person sessions. Naomi and I used the video tools online to evaluate what I was currently doing with my Zoe and we were able to pinpoint areas of improvement. Naomi has been so helpful with providing clear direction and has been diligent with follow up. I have seen progress with Zoe almost right away. This training is ongoing and with Naomis help I’m confident my training with Zoe will continue to progress. And as soon as we are able to have an in person trainings I will call Naomi for that meeting! I highly recommend Naomi for dog training!

Tammy was very friendly and responsive from the start. Before I even booked her, she did a free phone consultation and gave me tips to help manage my dog Theo in the meantime. We ended up doing a 3 week board and train. Tammy ended up picking him up earlier than we planned because he was starting to get out of control. We appreciated Tammy’s flexibility and concern for us as the owners. My dog needed to learn basic commands and leash training as well as correction for barking, biting, and crate training. My dog has high anxiety and can be very hyper active, so we knew we needed someone who could be loving yet strict to help us establish dominance in return for obedience. Upon his return, Theo knew how to heel, get down, leave things, and get off while jumping. He is also much better in the crate and on walks. She gave us the tools to continue correcting unwanted behaviors, which helps us feel in control. During his boarding, Tammy was very responsive and gave us updates on Theo’s progress. She also takes her time with the follow up lessons at our home. Highly recommend her services for your dog! Thanks Tammy!

Derek is amazing! Our phone consultation was informative and gave me hope that my dog could someday start behaving better on our walks. Well, that someday is already here! During our first session (just a week and a half after our consult), Derek decided to focus on prepping her to go on a walk because her reactivity to other dogs was so extreme (which he got to witness soon after arriving when a neighbor walked by with their dog). He demonstrated how to walk her and set the appropriate boundaries. And after observing him walk her and deal with passing dogs, I was able to walk her back home. Following his guidance, we had a very successful experience, even when another dog passed us. Two days later, after getting the right collar, I walked her and she did amazing. She stayed at my side, with only minor corrections along the way. And when we passed dogs two different times, I was able to completely keep her under control. It was incredible!! I’m so grateful to Derek, and I can’t wait for our next session in order to learn even more!! I also really appreciated that Derek never made me feel bad about my dog’s behavior, he simply focused on how we’re going to fix it I have been trying to train her for 2 years (the whole time we’ve had her) and although I had previously tried some of the things that Derek suggested, I was not doing it with the right collar, exact technique and with enough consistency. In 1 session, Derek already trained us and our dog to do so much better!! I’m so excited and grateful to have found Derek - it’s already making a huge difference for my dog and our family!!!

Eric was super helpful in laying the ground work with our new lab puppy! I’ve owned and trained several dogs throughout my life and am well versed in Caesar Milan’s methods. Eric was able to “train” me and support my efforts with a calm and positive approach. Leon took to him immediately and responded quickly to correction. I would highly recommend him! Oh yeah- in addition, he helped ease the tension and stressful dynamic with Leon and our ten year old lab, Rubi. All around- 5 stars!

Working with Tammy has been life changing. The amount of love and care she puts into her work has really shown in her training with our little Whiskey. We had opted for the 3 week board and train. Before meeting Tammy, I was worried my dog would never be able to break his fearful anxiety and special "selective hearing" condition. He was stubborn to a fault, and that worried me. Upon consultation, Tammy eased my worries and agreed to take him on. 3 weeks later and he was a different dog!!! I was amazed. He is well behaved, listens to every command, and even tolerates other dogs. It's been a couple of months since the end of the program. She has worked with him weekly since then and he continues to make great strides while remaining consistent. We even have decided to start boarding him with her once a month just so she can keep him in check. Lol Tammy, we adore you. We thank you so much for everything! Whiskey thanks you, too!
