Incredible caring team and quality professional work! They turned a great home into an extraordinary one for a reasonable price and at a fast speed. All finishes were selected with a great design team and the owner making a normally difficult drawn out process take just a few hours. Two and half bathrooms were improved from “okay” to “spa quality”. They knew just what to do and how to complete our goals and where we could save money. This took less than 2 weeks. The kitchen was tripled in size and the results were well beyond what we could envision. It went from apartment style to a dream home kitchen in only two months while we were still living there. It looks so beautiful now and everyone loves it! Then we had many other projects to do from adding recessed lighting to replacing all the hardware and everything in between. They were very open to incorporate our vague ideas into achievable results. Other contractors wanted twice as long, or longer to complete the same tasks. Home remodeling is often stressful but not when you have a talented and caring team on your side. Hire with complete confidence and watch your dreams turn into reality! You will thank yourself that you did.See more

I hired David and his team to do a complete remodel of my town home. I'm a very picky customer and "good enough" is not good enough for me. He was able to complete the work on time, on budget and to my satisfaction. He worked with me and helped (at times at his own expense) to resolve any and all issues that are inevitably discovered during complete remodels. He is responsive, honest and professional. I would recommend David and hire him again for my next project. This is what he completed. Strip down everything down to studs. Install external wall and attic insulation. Install new drywall. Install new kitchen cabinets and granite counter top. Install new windows. Install new front door. Install new water heater. Install new furnace. Install new tub and vanity. Copper re-pipe. Install new flooring (carpet and LVT). Install new recessed lights and updated electrical up to code. Installed crown moldings in all rooms. Fixed external stucco problems. Painted everything. I'm probably missing something but that is the major action items.See more

I have never given a review before but I feel I should this time. My husband and I haven't had much luck with contractors in general so we were worried and nervous about working with AG at first. Uriel and his crew changed our minds quickly. They worked on our backyard Monday through Saturday for the past 6 weeks. They were punctual, very hardworking and polite. That led us to give them more jobs and they ended up completing our entire backyard. They installed a paver patio, concrete walkway, and new grass with irrigation system, which all came out very beautifully. We can't wait for our girls to be running in our backyard! (crossing my fingers that air will get cleared soon...) Thank you Uriel and your crew for the big transformation you made to our backyard!See more

This is review is such a pleasure for me to write. Ronnie and his crew did magic in our home, and they were the most trustworthy, smart, kind and respectful team ever. They were not our cheapest option, but read on to know why cheap may not always be best :DAfter getting our plans done with our architect in March, we were itching to get started with our bathroom project; we ideally wanted it to be done by the summer because we had a big trip planned over a few weeks. We hired a contractor (NOT HQR) , who gave us a timeline to start and then blew past it, with little to no communication. After 2 months of delay (and them always turning our pleas to start the project into little jokes), we severed our ties with them and were back to square one, with an additional heaping spoonful of frustration. Not one to be defeated, my husband heard of BuildZoom and ended up requesting quotes for our project. HQR replied, as well as a couple other contractors. I clicked with Ronnie and his teammate immediately (unbeknownst to them, because I likely did not sound very nice that day) and told my husband I would be working with no one else. That feeling was reinforced by the fact that one of their Yelp reviews was from a gentleman who was gone the whole duration of the project, but had still come home to perfectly executed work. Yep, we had a winner.Only issue: their quote was much higher than the one we had before. After really negotiating with them, they agreed to work with us a bit. We definitely still had to invest more than we planned, but I can tell you now we do not regret it.Ronnie gave us a date immediately after we signed the contract, and we were slated to start 2 weeks later. Here is the funny part: we were so used to lies and fake deadlines from our previous contractor that we actually forgot and chaos ensued when Ronnie texted us 2 days before the start date to ask if we were ready (WE WERE NOT). We proceeded to move our poor parents ASAP (they were visiting), empty the room next to the bathroom and prep for the crews arrival in a couple days. It was epic.Work started as planned, and moved super fast. We only ran into delays when waiting for inspectors; otherwise everything was smooth. Ronnies crew helped get materials (we were traveling for over half of the project, so we made WhatsApp work for it), pick up fixtures, schedule appointments with inspectors, and just everything that was needed for the project to be completed on time. They even gave us a referral for the glass enclosure for the shower. Our project was completed in less time than scheduled, and I want to mention that Ronnie was also on vacation for some of it; crew kept moving with no issues at all. Thanks HQR (especially Ronnie and Eilio) for our bathroom; working with you was such a pleasure, and we will recommend you to anyone who comes our way!See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
