She brings an amazing level of comfort and warmth to every session. I was in need of stress relief and assistance with sleep patterns and within one session my stress level was reduced and I was able to sleep through the night. I continue to see her every month or every other month as just a "touch up" and to be able to discuss the issues as they come up. But, her skill through hypnosis has given me building blocks that allow me to calm myself down and fall asleep. I'm able to put myself under as needed to relax and build on those blocks thanks to her. Highly recommend her for all her assistance and most importantly support through a very stressful moment of my life.

Before beginning session work with Susan French, my anxiety disorder had paralyzed me with fear, robbing me of my ability to function. Insomnia had robbed me of my strength and I could no longer run (one of my biggest passions). Through Susan's open, compassionate approach to therapy and her expertise in the field of hypnosis, I've regained my life. My personal preference was to avoid any type of medication, and because of Susan's help, I have been successful in that. I now sleep through the night, am back to running 50 miles a month and I'm working on writing my second novel. My anxiety will never leave me completely, but Susan has given me many invaluable tools in which to manage that anxiety and not allow it to rule my life. She has forever changed my life and I cannot thank her enough. My husband, close friends and animal companions thank her too. :-)

Debra has helped me identify, confront and finally take control of the issues that have debilitated me for a large part of my life. Her guidance brought clarity to my life and provided effective tools for me to use to become a stronger person. My most amazing experience was the one hypnosis session with Debra, where she took me gently into a part of me where I was able to finally come face to face with the source of my insecurities. Debra has definitely made a positive impact on me! I am thankful for that everyday.

I used hypnosis as a last resort to help me with losing weight. I couldn’t stick to a diet and was a big emotional eater. Even though, I was sketipical spending the money, it was worth every penny. It was a lot of work on my part, homework, changing my eating style, working out, but it was worth it. I’m down twenty pounds with more to go.

Lynda has been a God send for my anxiety and weight loss issues! I've gotten life changing results from her and she will be my go to hypnotherapist for any problems that come up for me in the future. She's genuinely caring, patience and gives a great amount of time to her patients. I've gotten total control of my anxiety and understand completely where it comes from. With regard to my weight loss I've been struggling for years to keep off the 20 pounds that have stayed for years and made me not confident about myself! After my hypnotherapy sessions with Lynda not only did I get in weight loss mode I've kept the weight off for more than a year! Prior I never got to 10 pounds let alone it staying off for more than 2 months. If you want results I suggest trying Lynda out for sure.

I had an amazing experience with Francoise. Within 4 weeks I had lost 15 pounds and was feeling so so great. Due to old beliefs from childhood that no longer worked for me, i had a LOT of gained weight that i could not lose by myself. My mind feels healthier now as well as my body. I can't thank Francoise enough!

Ray helped me with some old habits I couldn't seem to get rid of: excessive drinking and binge eating. He also helped me with grief from the loss of my son. I've had counseling before, but with the hypnosis that Ray does, it made it so easy to make the changes I had been trying to make for years with limited success. I was so impressed with his ability to focus on what the real issues were. Seeing Ray was definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Meg has a clear understanding of how the use of hypnosis can help someone break barriers and be successful at their goals. Meg and I were introduced, thru a study she was doing for weight loss, and due to her help I've been very successful. For those who don't understand hypnosis she uses visualization and guided imagery to help you break the barriers down . I was very comfortable from the first moment I met her and will continue to seek her help as needed.

I had been seeing Jayne for weight loss for several sessions and wasn't seeing results. A couple of sessions ago, Jayne confronted me for not doing any of the "homework" she had given me. She called me on the fact that I had been doing it "my" way and asked why I continued to come to see her. She, in fact, kindly suggested that I not waste my money or time and just not come anymore. This shocked me because it became evident to me that she was not in this for the money and that she really wanted to help... I also understood how I had been sabotaging myself. I allowed her to finally work with me on the releasing the resistance... It was a huge moment for me and since then, everything has turned around for me! Jayne is incredibly intuitive, kind and nurturing and I cannot say enough wonderful things about her and her techniques... they just work!

I've finally started losing weight! I really wasn't sure the hypnotherapy sessions over the phone would be as effective as in person, but I'm so happy to be proved wrong. I also thought the weight loss for hypnotherapy would be you "programming" me to eat less and exercise more. I had no idea hypnotherapy could help me deal with my emotions, which was the driving factor for my eating habits. I felt "lighter" when our session was over, but I really didn't think anything in my life would change. Then I noticed my clothes getting looser in just a week or two. When we looked over the last couple of weeks, I had to admit that I wasn't as hungry nor was I eating as much as I did before. And I just started walking daily with my brother. I thought it was because I'd learned my blood pressure was high, but I know my weight has not been a healthy thing for me for a long time. The sudden motivation made me realize how effortless the results are with hypnosis. I'm doing things differently without having to think about it...just like you said it would happen. You were right!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How does hypnosis work?

Hypnosis is a wellness technique that works by promoting positive behavioral or cognitive changes. During successful hypnosis, the client should be eased into a state of deep relaxation in which the conscious mind takes a back seat and the subconscious mind becomes more active. The client is often able to let go of critical thoughts and become receptive to the therapist’s suggestions. In this state of hypnosis, motivating suggestions can bypass your usual mental resistance and internal defense mechanisms. For example, even if you want to quit overeating cupcakes, you may have some level of resistance that your rational mind can’t overcome. During hypnosis, the positive suggestions made by the hypnotherapist can bypass your usual blocks, helping you to achieve the formerly unachievable: stopping overeating, quitting smoking, mastering public speaking, or losing your fear of heights. The goal of hypnosis is to strengthen and empower the client’s motivation, commitment and focus. Consider working with someone who is not just trained in hypnosis but also is a licensed therapist or psychotherapist who can bring their academic background into your session.

What can hypnosis help you with?

According to many sources including the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine and a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), hypnosis is scientifically proven to help relieve both mental challenges and physical pains. Hypnosis can alleviate stress and reduce pain after surgeries, has been shown to relieve anxiety in children in the emergency room, and can be useful for managing pain associated with everything from arthritis to migraines. Hypnosis is non-invasive and gives you a way to control pain or discomfort that might otherwise seem out of your hands. Hypnosis shouldn’t be used as a substitute for medical care, but may be an excellent complementary tool that is best provided by a trained therapist or licensed medical provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center shares many conditions for which hypnosis can be useful:

      • Irritable bowel syndrome
      • Tension headaches
      • Alopecia areata
      • Asthma
      • Phobias
      • Insomnia
      • Addictions
      • Bedwetting
      • Fibromyalgia
      • Labor and delivery
      • Skin disorders, such as acne, psoriasis and eczema (atopic dermatitis)
      • Stress
      • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
      • Cancer-related pain
      • Weight loss
      • Eating disorders
      • Warts
      • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
      • Post-traumatic stress disorder
      • Smoking cessation

How is hypnosis used in therapy?

Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help clients overcome challenging issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain management, hot flashes and more. Hypnosis is also a way to help let go of addictions like smoking, overeating and gambling. In and of itself, hypnosis is not a therapy, but it can be used in conjunction with therapy to empower and encourage the person receiving it to make positive change. Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis and will benefit more from hypnotherapy than others.

According to Dr. Clifford N. Lazarus, speaking for Psychology Today, hypnosis is a “genuine psychological phenomenon that has valid uses in clinical practice … hypnosis is a state of highly focused attention or concentration, often associated with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it seems many people are much more open to helpful suggestions than they usually are.” The suggestions made in a therapeutic setting get deep into a person’s brain, beyond their conscious thinking, leading to behavior change and the ability to overcome challenges that might otherwise seem insurmountable.

What is the effectiveness of hypnosis?

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recognizes the healing power of hypnosis and its proven effectiveness for anxiety, pain control, smoking cessation, headaches and more. Hypnosis may be safe and complementary way to augment medical attention you are receiving for a chronic illness or pain, or a way to resolve an addiction or phobia that you are otherwise unable to control. Hypnosis does not work on every person. When scientists began studying hypnosis in earnest, a report published by Stanford University titled “The Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale” demonstrated that different brains respond to hypnosis in varying degrees, and a very few do not respond at all. Working with a trained psychologist, you’ll soon determine whether you are a good candidate for the healing benefits of hypnotherapy.

During a hypnotherapy session, the therapist will bring you into a state of deep relaxation in which the critical, conscious part of your brain recedes and the subconscious mind becomes alert and focused. The therapist will make suggestions, based on your intended goals, that will take root in your subconscious mind. These suggestions should affect your thinking in a positive way and empower you to make change.
