This was my first experience with a tax preparer. I thought that Avi did a fine job. Avi showed up at the appointed time, was very business-like but very personable. The forms were all filled out per the data papers that I had given him. He explained the options that I had for paying an unusually large tax bill (we had sold a house recently) and the possibility of negotiating with the IRS to reduce our tax liability. All in all it was a very pleasant experience, which I would repeat again under similar circumstances.

My long-time CPA/EA retired, and I was in need of a new Tax Preparer on short notice. Also, this was the year I transitioned to Retirement, so lots of one-time items. Jay reviewed all the documents and prepared for e-file. Jay gave a very good explanation of everything, especially the unique items that had concerned me. Expecting this to begin a long-term relationship.

Very happy with them and their rates. Went through an audit for my business with another firm which cost an enormous amount of money. Went through the second with Raymond and it cost a fraction. Absolutely amazing work. Very pleasant to work with and will never go to another auditor again.

I am very grateful to have found an amazing accountant! Rebecca not only takes care of my personal taxes but also oversees our Home Owners Association accounts. I find her to be very personable, flexible and above all knowledgable. She gives me great advice, is proactive and thinks out of the box. She always states that she takes care of her clients as if she is doing her own taxes and she has definitely lived up to this! Rebecca, thank you for your impeccable service.

Wendy Vincent assisted me with document creation, training on Quickbooks desk top 2013, and basic bookkeeping knowledge for best business practices. She also showed me the difference between my current Accrual Accounting, vs Cash Accounting, and how each effects my bottom line, and tax filings at the end of the year. Using Vincent Bookkeeping for training on proper journal entries for GAAP Standards has help create an error free set of books. After reviewing my corrected books Wendy Vincent advised me on networking, sales and marketing ideas to match my Advertising and Business Development budget. Thank you Wendy

Nat's Tax Service is SIMPLY AMAZING! Natalie Cunha makes tax filing absolutely convenient and painless. I submitted a request on Thumbtack last minute since we had a complicated tax filing this year and decided to use a Professional expert. She answered my tax service request within an hour. I sent her all my tax paperwork via email and along with a short description of the situation. She followed up with a phone call and promptly filed my taxes in the matter of days! I couldn't believe how easy she made this for me. She filed taxes for my entire family and we received the highest tax return by using her service. She is professional, trustworthy, smart and incredible knowledgeable. She is the best tax service I have ever used. I will continue to work with her. I can't recommend her enough for your tax services. She is that perfect personal Tax Accountant that I had been looking for all this while!

I have been using tax filing and resolution services from Legacy Tax Resolution Services for almost 5 years. They handle both my individual and business tax accounts and there has never been any lapse in services. Every time I call them up, the representatives are extremely polite and friendly plus they explain and resolve each problem so elaborately until you’re absolutely satisfied. I recently took up my father-in-laws case with these guys. He had been served a 20,000 tax notice by the IRS even though he is retired. These guys entertained the case on my request and handled with extreme professionalism. The notice was overturned and my wife’s father was all praise for me and Legacy Tax Resolutions. Amazing job guys! Keep it up!

Bruce is great. He listens to my problems and always has a great recommendation for solving them. He helped us get our accounting system installed, HR systems in place, set up our company, prepared taxes and as we have grown, helped with complex business issues. Would not hesitate to recommend Bruce for any business help. He's not cheap, but well worth the price.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

    What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

    • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
    • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
    • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
    • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.
