David is one of the hardest working people I have ever met. He showed up when he said he would and kept me informed throughout the entire job. Our fence had become unstable during the last big wind. David took a look at it, made some suggestions, and went straight to work. He added some additional posts to support the weak fence and quickly repaired all of the loose and failing areas. The job was completed quickly, properly, and came out looking clean. He stuck to his price and was very honest about what he was charging for and why. I would recommend David for any fence work and will be calling him again.

We found Salinas home remodeling services most helpful in several ways. Services done for us included electrical wiring, plumbing installation, wall and ceiling painting with texture applications. Also, bathtub, sink and appliance installation. All work was done at high standards. Note: we also experienced generous and positive attitudes from soft spoken professionals, and received on time service. Above all, we have memories of his installation process that are most rewarding. Thank You, Mr. Vyron Salinas and his helper Pablo. Yours truly, Nicholas Adkins

I found THUMBTACK and used it for the first time to find someone to build a fence in my backyard that was to be seven feet high and fifteen feet long. Five people replied within the first three hours. I interviewed four of them on a Thursday. The bids were, $900, $1200. $1300 and $2200. Gustavo bid $1200 and I selected him over the cheaper bid for three reasons, first he was very precise about the details of the material costs, second he had two other men with him so I was quite confident he could get the job done in one day, and third he said he would come back on the following Monday morning between 9 and 9:30. He arrived on time and immediately got to work. The job was finished by 4 that afternoon and looks very good. I would hire him again without doubt. He is intelligent and hard working. He does what he promises and does a quality job. The two men who were with him was equally high quality. They are polite and professional. The only issue is that at times I was not sure we were communicating. His English is fair, much better than my Spanish.

Highly recommend!! Rene totally transfomed our yard, and put in 4 very long days to get it done. His team is extremely professional and respectful of our home, took their time and went above and beyond what we expected from a lawn care team. Installed new storm drainage, rebuilt part of our fence, and fixed a old irrigation system -- all on time and for a fair price. They even called us to let us know we'd overpayed (added up receipts incorrectly) and offered to drive over with a refund. We're very happy to have found this team!

When it rain a river flow through my garage and relocating a washer/dryer into the garage blocked part of the garage man door. I posted the job on Thumbtack that I needed to remove and wall up the existing door, pour 6" concrete at the base of the old door to match the existing perimeter and cut/install a new door in a different location. Kelly's estimate beat his competition. He was very clear what were included. He arrived early, walked around the garage listening to my concerns, then we agreed on the work he will complete in 2 days. He was very clear how long it would take and supplies he needed to get, down to the detail of which garage door to buy, which direction it needed to swing and hardware to install. As promised, two days later Kelly and his assistant was done and cleaned up. I'm very happy with my new door and no more worrying about rain flooding the garage. Thanks Kelly for being true to your word.

We hired Lifetime Remodeling in the summer of 2017 to do a first floor addition to our home in Millbrae. The project involved adding 400 square feet to our house, which included expanding the living room and adding a new bedroom and a new bathroom. It was wonderful working with Sam and his team at every step of the way. Their bid was very competitive compared to the many others I got, and the estimated time for completion (about four months) was much shorter than most of the other quotes. Lifetime's responsive customer service and attention to detail made our lives so much easier. Here are just a few examples of things they did to minimize our stress. When strong winds blew the construction fence over during off hours, they came out here quickly to get it back up and weigh it down with sandbags. When it came time to block off the parts of the house being demolished, they helped us move furniture and cover it carefully so that it would not get damaged or dirty during construction. When they needed to move the wiring for our internet access, they made sure to reconnect it promptly. The temporary wall they built was very sturdy and effective at blocking out dust, so we had no problem continuing to live in the house throughout the construction. Sam also closely inspected all the work and often caught adjustments to be made that I did not notice. For example, even though the interior painting looked fine to me, Sam decided that he wanted another coat. When we did point out other things that needed adjusting, such as leveling out certain fixtures, the team promptly fixed them. When I asked for a different design for our recessed lighting at the last minute, even after some of them had already been installed, Sam accommodated the request. Sam checked in with me often, so I always felt well informed about the next steps coming up and what I needed to plan for. This was awesome because I learned that it can be agonizing to pick out tiles, hardwood, hardware, etc. for a project like this, especially for someone like me doing it for the first time. It was also helpful to have Sam's recommendations for suppliers for the finishes and fixtures. We were really impressed that Lifetime finished the project pretty much right on schedule and with absolutely no cost overruns. To make this happen, most days, Lifetime had a team of two to four workers here by 8 a.m., and they worked steadily for the entire day. They also often worked on weekends. After Lifetime finished the addition to the house, we ended up also hiring them to do landscaping for our front yard and replacing our concrete driveway with paver stones. They also did a great job on this, and we are so happy with and amazed by how our house looks now. Remodeling inevitably involves many hard decisions and a lot of time, energy, and money invested by the homeowner! The last thing you need is a contractor who adds unnecessary stress, yet it seemed like everyone I talked to had horror stories about their contractors. We are so grateful that Sam and Lifetime made it a wonderful experience for us.

Saia was punctual and very professional with giving me a quote. He was very punctual and his work building my fence was exceptional. My tenant and my neighbor were very satisfied with the quality of the fence. My only small suggestion would be to be able to accept payment via Venmo or PayPal or something similar. I’m in the LA area, so I wasn’t present at the time of the job and it would make the transaction quicker for both parties. Other than that, I would highly recommend Saia to anyone who would want great quality fence work at a competitive price!

Richard sealed Windows and trim that are 25 feet high! He also reattached siding and cleaned gutters. We are now sealed tight for the rains. Richard and his helper were on time, very courteous and did a fantastic job. A new fence is next and Richard will be the one I will ask to do the job. I am a picky person and I highly recommend him.

We hired ER Construction to replace the siding on our garage and install new windows, side door, and garage door. Enrique's crew did a fantastic job! It looks like a brand new building. The workers arrived promptly each morning and worked hard all day. The price was quite reasonable. We are very pleased with the finished project and would definitely recommend ER Construction.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
