The best pet-sitter ever! The ultimate professional, Cathy checks in ahead of time to confirm, takes excellent care of my pups and leaves without a trace. Best part is that I get pictures and videos of my dogs playing and relaxing, looking very happy. Will have her back again for sure!

I initially used this company for a last-minute service over Thanksgiving (the other sitter I had lined up canceled last-minute). I was totally thrilled with the quick response as well as the quality of service Kelly provided. So happy that I used them again for Xmas! I would recommend these sitters any day -- they deliver above and beyond expectations!

Christina was amazing cat sitter for us. She checked in on Merlin once every couple of days while we were out on a week long vacation. She not only followed every instruction we left her, but also went out of her way to bond with our cat and keep him company (and trust me our cat is not the easiest to bond with). She knowledgeable and confident around pets. I will definitely be checking if she is available next time we need a pet sitter.

Kristen was warm and welcoming when I arrived for my first lesson. For my second lesson, she made sure I did not go beyond my abilities for the day. I am looking forward to learning more from her and gaining more experience on how to properly ride a horse. Thanks Kristen. :) Fran B.

I cannot recommend Jared enough! This was my first time having a dog sitter and it could not have gone better. Leading up to my trip, Jared not only came by to meet the dogs but asked all the right questions. He made me feel confident that the dogs would be happy and healthy while I was away. Once he got to my house, he gave regular updates and photos of the pups. I had a lot of anxiety leading up to the trip, but as soon as Jared got to my house I felt like the dogs were being taken care of by someone who genuinely cares. One of my dogs has aggressive tendencies and is 1.5 years old and can definitely be a handful at times, and Jared did an amazing job taking care of her and ensuring that she was safe. I cannot wait to plan my next trip and finally stop inconveniencing friends. Thank you Jared!!

Our 10 year old daughter Ella has been riding with Kate for about 2 years. We cannot say enough about how wonderful Kate is for Ella and all of the other kids at the barn. She builds their self-confidence, their leadership skills, and has high expectations of them...all in a low pressure environment which is an usual magical combination. It goes with our saying that Kate's riding is exceptional and her dedication to all things equestrian is superlative. She trains Ella to ride her best, every ride, but somehow manages to make the hard work FUN. She pushes Ella and the kids to be their best and they are eager to please her and make her proud. And in turn, she helps them be proud of their accomplishments. Last Summer we bought a horse for Ella - we didn't know where to begin. Kate helped us every step of the way to get the absolute right match for Ella. A few months later when Ella developed some fears, Kate worked with Ella to overcome her fears and develop as a stronger rider. Kate works tirelessly, night and day, at the barn for the kids and the horses. The kids all want to hang around and watch Kate instruct the other kids because they learn so much just by watching. Sometimes Kate will bring in experts for specific clinics and this has always been a huge learning experience for the kids. Kate also organizes many fun shows so the kids can get a taste of riding competitively. And as if this is not enough, in Jan 2017, Kate gave Ella the riding goals they had written down for 2017...we were so pleased that, with Kate's guidance, Ella achieved every one of them. I can't say enough about this amazing young woman and how fortunate we feel to have her influence and presence in our daughter's life. She is an all-around, phenomenal role model for kids.

I highly recommend Eden's Best. Steve is a total pro. He was responsive, thoughtful, and thorough when meeting and establishing visitation parameters. There was a bit more paperwork than I'm used to, but it all made sense and gave me full confidence my cats where in good hands and that all contingencies were accounted for. This is not the fly-by-night, willy-nilly approach I've had with most other sitters. While I was out (for 3 full weeks!), service was regular and punctual. After each visit, I got email and pictures letting me know everything was fine with the cats. When we came home, we found a stack of report cards showing more detailed behavior and demeanor of our pets on each visit. As I'm sure you can imagine, it was such a wonderful relief having such a conscientious professional looking after our cats.

Jody has been my cat sitter for almost 14 years now. My cat, Honey, sees Jody as a play date because that's what it's like when Jody comes over. She spends quality time with Honey which gives me tremendous peace of mind.

Evie and Johnny took care of our precious daughter pup in February and I'm so glad I went with my intuition and gave their pet sitting service a try. I could tell straight away on meeting Evie that her heart was huge for animals. She also listened carefully to what Odessa's needs were and they honored them, with photo updates too! From these I saw how Dessy bonded with Johnny and she's quite fussy about men. I'm very happy we have sitters now for our furkid any time we go away.

We would highly recommend Andrew as a pet care-giver in the Bay Area. He proved himself to be extremely responsible, trustworthy and professional. We were very happy with the services he provided. He was required to provide care for our 7 year old lab-mix, Rusty. A big dog who needs a lot of exercise. The schedule required 3 day-time visits, at 8am, 12:30pm and again at 5pm, to walk, feed and play with our dog, over the two-week period that we were away. Andrew is obviously very comfortable around animals and our dog loved him. We had other arrangements for overnight care, however, Andrew did everything we asked of him and after our initial meetings with him, my husband and I were very comfortable with his ability to be conscious of the security of our home during these visits. Our dog was very, well taken care of during our absence. We will definitely hire him again, whenever the need arises.

I highly recommend Dennis and Bright Ranch for horseback riding! My 10 year old son begged for us to get him lessons for almost a year. I found the Bright Ranch and explained exactly what kind of experience we were looking for. After the first lesson, my son gave Dennis the highest compliments and is looking forward to many days spent learning to ride and care for the horses. We are very happy to have found such a great program!

We have been taking our 8 year old to Susie for over a year and she has a great time with her. Not only has she learned about riding also the overall care of a horse as well as helping feed the chickens and gather eggs and clean up. It has been a great eye opening experience for my daughter. She really emphasizes attention to detail in her riding and safety is a priority. Susie is great with the kids and has a keen sense of when to push and when to back off. We have become great friends with Susie and really value her friendship.

I recently had to go out of town and my regular pet sitter decided to double her rates two days before. So I went searching for a new pet sitter and I found ElizaPets on Nextdoor and I am so very glad I did. My sweet cat became very sick the very first day I left. Elizabeth went above and beyond taking Beimer to her regular vet and then on to Sage (where if you've been there you know you wait for hours to be seen) where we found that Beimer has kidney cancer. Elizabeth help guide me though the whole process long distance with the vets, their diagnosis and treatment options. She then spent time with Beimer, sitting with her in the sun (Beimer loves sitting in the sun), and never once complained nor asked for addition payment. The first pet sitter only spent 10 minutes of her time when she came to care for Beimer. I'm grateful I found and hired Elizabeth. I highly recommend ElizaPets! Thank you Elizabeth!

Tabitha took care of my Lily for 6 nights and 7 full days. Tabitha definitely pays close attention to detail, especially when it comes to Lily's medicine. I have fought her left and right, but Tabitha had found the best way to 'sneak' them (Hotdogs!). Lily is extremely spoiled when it comes to taking walks. I knew Tabitha works a full time job, but her heart is definitely with animals. After a long day at work, I would still get a text and a photo of Lily getting excited for her walk. I absolutely recommend Tabitha as a pet sitter, she does great with my Lily! And my lazy house cat, Smokey.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
