They packed and moved our home in about six hours of hard and great work. They were very professional and took good care of our belongings, and nothing got broken despite the fact we had so many glasses and fragile furniture! They were also well priced, punctual, and they worked so well and efficiently in their team. They were also very responsive and when we thought we had a minor issue they were on top of it right away. Thank you so much for making our move easy!

I called Wesley on Saturday morning after another mover flaked out. Wesley made it happen! The next day at 11am, our moving crew was on the spot! Wesley and Shift It, are life savers!. A few nicks and dings, but we made our move, and we are happy. That Shift It crew is so much fun, my room mate bought lunch, and we are planning to invite them for the housewarming party!

Scott and Steve were incredible! They went above and beyond what was expected and were very professional during the entire move. They got my entire apartment moved to my new apartment on the 3rd floor with no elevator without complaint or slowing! No hidden fees or anything. Tony, the manager, even called in the middle of the visit to check on how it was going. If you are looking to get any size home moved, I 100% recommend these guys!

I couldn't be happier! Frank is extremely professional, he knows what he's doing and his rates are fantastic. Plus he's a extremely friendly guy--an attribute that can take a lot of stress away when moving into a new space and trying to assemble furniture etc. He was communicative throughout the day, showed up early and built a fairly complex IKEA bed in less than two hours. All at a great rate!! I could not recommend Frank enough. Thanks again sir!!

I am the type of person who fastidiously researches before I act. When my family and I were moving back into our home post-renovation, I researched all the local moving companies through thumbtack. I made my usual spreadsheet with prices, reviews, licensed vs. insured, years in business & whether background checked; and reached out to my top choices. The family business News Moving Company quickly became my obvious first choice. From start to finish, Delila handled each & every question and concern I had with patience & diligence. She was very responsive and reasonable. Their reviews speak for themselves: over 90% are 5-Star reviews. They understood better than any my unique situation of not needing to move from one place to another, but rather move from Pods in my driveway back into my home. On the day of the move, Frank, Jesse, and one other mover showed up on time. The move was amazing - they were fast, yet super careful & conscientious. They handled our unique situation as if they’d done it a million times and kept in communication throughout. Unlike other companies in the past, they didn’t dilly-dally or stretch the time. They finished in the quoted minimum time and charged the exact fair price we had discussed. I highly endorse and would recommend News Moving to any friend, loved one, or reader like you! You will not be disappointed.

Great movers! Recommended. Booked them on thumbtack and confirmed in 2 days for the following Wednesday pick up. I could choose drop off time frame. They were running late on Wednesday and immediately offered me a credit. The guys were professional and moved very fast and very kind. No compalints about moving up second story. Would use again. Very convenient to get quite online. I just took pictures of what need to be moved and they gave me a quote within 24 hours.

I was moving from Oxnard Ca to Las Vegas Nevada 4 bedroom + garage and backyard patio. I recieved quotes from various moving companies stating that my belongins would needed to be loaded into an 18 wheeler and they did not do next day deliver so i had to wait a week for my furniture. I was under the pressure of moving quick and I needed my items within a week(I run a business from home) delivered to my house out there in Vegas. I was told that i was asking for an unreasonable request from various company representatives. So in a last effort I went on Craigslist hoping to find someone to help me. Sure enough I did. I called 101 relocation services and spoke to Tony, he sent me a link to his thumbtack page, I had seen that they had strong reviews. With the exception of the 2 one star reviews, I decided to take a chance. I called Tony and he was quick to assess my situation. He was able to come the next day and load up a 28 foot truck no problem. Everything got wrapped and stacked properly into the trailer. I have moved variouse times and I can tell when there is quality work being done and these guys sure have. My items got delivered the next day around 10 am safely. The move was done so efficient and quickly that I tipped the guys very generously, They had saved me a couple thousand so the least i could do was return the favor. I was glad to have found 101 relocation services they live up to their name. I would definitely recommend these guys. Thank you Tony and his helpers.

He moved a large, heavy credenza. It was turned down by 3 charitable organizations that wasted my time by assuring me on the phone it would be removed, but each time their movers rejected it. Brett is careful, professional and pleasant.

I was very pleased with the service. I spoke to Dave in advance and we discussed all costs before the job started. The movers were very professional. They wrapped and handled carefully all items that called for special care. They moved all boxes, furniture and other items carefully without banging into walls so I didn't have to worry about touch ups to the place I was moving from. Everything arrived at the new place in good condition. I have nothing but compliments for these movers.

I had a lot of things to be stressed out about this weekend, but moving was not one of them! The guys at New Life did an excellent job picking up my life and hauling it across the bay. They were careful with my fragile stuff. I had already packed things before they came, but they did their due diligence to double-tape some containers they didn't think were secured enough. I appreciated that! The movers were really friendly and weren't shy about striking up conversation- about painting (I have a lot) and about how to not get scammed out of a security deposit, about checking in with me to make sure the furniture and everything is where they should be. They came to my car to help me with my bags and smaller boxes, not just relegating themselves to the moving tuck. I can tell these guys worked really hard. The whole affair took a little over 3 hours, and they came well within their arrival window of 8-10 am (Arrived at 830am) so I had plenty of my day left to organize. Would definitely work with them again! Thank you again!!

I had a very positive experience with Happy Home Moving! My initial appointment set-up was with Klara, who understood my needs and conveyed them fully and confirmed my move quickly. We'd had a 2pm to 5pm window for their arrival, but movers Arti and Roman evidently finished their morning move early, and called to ask if it'd be okay to get started by me at 12:30 - which actually worked out well for my day! They were gracious, very careful with my belongings and worked quickly. We all finished at the destination in 2 hours, and I had zero problem paying the three-hour minimum for such great service. I highly recommend tipping generously, truly. This is tough work in hot weather, and they worked hard, loading heavy box after heavy box. I've requested them specifically for an additional move I have coming up for Part Two in a couple days. I highly recommend this service provider!

For our furniture business and in our personal home move, we have repeatedly hired and recommended College Men Movers. Leon and his team take special care with everything, from marble tables to framed artwork, from packing to unpacking. Even under the hottest temperatures, they are always incredibly courteous, respectful, tidy and fast. We've enlisted CMM a dozen times, maybe more in the last year alone, and they will continue to be our go-to guys for moving and delivering.

I will use Alfredo for all my service moving forward. We had him out to flush our tankless water heater. I was unable to be there but (without me asking) he sent me progress photos and a video of the flush. Outstanding! My wife was also impressed with his professionalism. He even took of his boots to walk a short distance through the house to access the back yard. Communication was great and price was good. All around, a great value. I look forward to working with Alfredo again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
