Great service! I have struggled for years with keeping my space clean and organized and hired Michael to help me with an overhaul of two rooms in my apartment - including both a re-organization and redesign to make my space as relaxing, beautiful and easy to maintain as possible. Not only was Michael responsive, flexible and easy to work with, he was able to do it all on a budget, helping to scout affordable furniture and decor in addition to the legwork of coordinating deliveries etc as needed. In a matter of weeks he was able to get done what would have taken me literally years to do myself. I am very pleased with how my space turned out and would recommend him to anybody who needs a little help to reset and recharge your dwelling!

I hired Jasper from My Apartment Is Better Than Yours. I think they did a terrific job at a very reasonable price. I'm really pleased that I decided to go with them. I had a number of unusual carpentry tasks to complete when I moved to my new place. The windows were old and the wood was irregular and moldy, so the wood around the antique glass panels needed to be replaced. I was told those windows hadn't been opened in 40 years, but now they work perfectly and you'd never know the wood wasn't original. Also, several doorways lacked doors when I moved in, and were unusual rounded shapes cut into the stucco without doorframes. Jasper was able to make me custom doors with antique iron-wrought handles, and they look awesome. I also needed threshholds worked on, cabinets put up, new benches made for my roof deck, a custom projector and screen put in, antique chandeliers installed, a lock repaired... and I'm probably forgetting one or two things. They are in the process of putting the finishing touches on my humidor (they had to build me custom legs for it), and it's going to look spectacular. Anyway, they knocked it all out of the park. They were prompt and clean and didn't cause much of a disturbance despite all the work they were doing. They'll be my go-to for anything I need done in the future. I definitely recommend them.

My wife, my daughter and I lived in a well-furnished home in the east coast for two years before we moved to our then unfurnished apartment in Millbrae CA last month. Since we did not have any furniture and we needed to move in almost immediately, we decided that it might be best to ask for help of a professional who could nicely furnish our flat for us in a very short period of time to save us time, money, energy and headaches. We looked on the internet and put out our request on Thumbtack and immediately received Nicki's reply. In the next few days, she visited our apartment twice and communicated closely with us on the layout, tone, furniture and accessories and promptly worked out a budget and a schedule of deliveries. Everything was done in a week! We moved in(just dropped our bags) and were all impressed by the carefully selected and skillfully arranged colors, furnishings and accessories, and the inviting environment created by Nicki and her team, we could stay here forever! Thank you for your nice work Nicki and I would recommend NBL Design to anyone who is looking for talented adepts to design and stage their homes.

Maria was responsible for turnkey selecting, purchasing, and handling the installation of furniture and accessories for a largely empty home. (I was moving from a small apartment to a single family home, so the existing furniture left the majority of the living area empty.) Maria picked out great looking furniture, accessories and art with my consultation and review, and I was very happy with the results. The end product was very much in line with the design motif proposed (going for rustic modern), and it made the relatively dated 70s style house and fixtures look much better. Maria is pleasant and professional to work with, knows her stuff, and was great to work with. Highly recommended!

I found Kunjan through her blog, from where I was directed to her Yelp page. I was impressed by her portfolio and decided to arrange a meeting and am so glad I did! From the very first interaction, Kunjan brought a tremendous amount of creativity and energy. She is extremely personable and has a knack for quickly understanding style preferences and needs. We didn't want to overspend, and she made us feel that we could get great design at any price point. Our style is modern with a touch of eclectic. There were a few pieces from before that we wanted to keep but weren't sure how. Kunjan found a place for our preowned items, while carefully picking out new versatile pieces that incorporated our style and that also created an illusion of space for our tiny city apartment. She has a great eye for color and helped us visualize the best colors for our home. My work demands a lot of traveling and Kunjan was very accommodative of my schedule. She also included many field trips which made us feel very involved in the furniture buying process. We LOVE what Kunjan did for us. Our apartment continues to receive so many compliments :) I highly recommend Kunjan!!

I moved into a tiny apartment in SF without a single piece of furniture. I enlisted Angela's help to make the most out of my small space and was so pleased with the process and the results. She acted quickly by scheduling a call, stopping by my apartment to take measurements and following up with a layout and project scope. We then, worked together to decide on a vision of the space. She sourced pieces, ordered them or in some cases, went to the store to pick them up. She was very hands-on and helpful. Decorating an apartment from scratch can be stressful but Angela remained positive and believed in our vision, which allowed me to do the same. Now my apartment is complete and it feels better than I could have imagined. From a design perspective, it is beautiful but it is also comfortable and functional. I am stoked. The final thing I'd like to share is that working with Angela was actually way more affordable than I thought it could be - she found great deals on furnishing and often received additional designer discounts. Working with her was way easier than doing it alone, the design surpassed what I would have been able to achieve and it turned out to be so affordable. Thanks, Angela!

The entire process was great! Leslie was very responsive and easy to work with. I called her on Monday morning, she was at my home taking pictures by the afternoon. Sent me the contract on Tuesday and Wednesday arrived on time with the furniture and decorations. I had lots of workers at my home that day doing various jobs, but Leslie never added to my stress. It was great! My husband and I are so happy that we made this small investment and realize it will help us get a good price. And my home is beautiful! Wish I could keep everything forever.

Sarah did an incredible job putting together my apartment. I was starting from scratch after moving to SF from the east coast, and wanted to get my apartment furnished and decorated quickly. Sarah made a big effort up front to understand my budget and get a sense of my taste and preferences (even when I didn't know what I wanted myself!). She gave me a variety of choices and themes from which to pick from. She went out of her way to shop for different items in person and to see furniture and decor in person. She was able to utilize discounts whenever possible to save me money. She even took the time to receive deliveries for me and help assemble furniture and decorate the apartment with me. She is personable, sweet and always had a big smile on her face. She went out of her way to make sure that I was happy with every piece, big or small. She is also very professional and she was constantly focused and attentive. She made herself available to me 24/7 despite her busy schedule, it always felt like I was a priority. My experience with Sarah could not have been better, I would absolutely hire her again and would recommend her for any project, large or small. She has impeccable taste and an ability to truly transform a space into one that feels like home.

I recently hired Reesa to completely re-design and remodel my 4 bedroom home. She made this first time experience quite easy and I got to learn so many things along the way. She listened to all my wants and translated them into designs that I could never dream of. She is full of amazing, out of the box ideas and turned my home into something I truly enjoy sharing with friends and family.

Feifei helped us remodel and decorate our new home in California. Her team was very patient in selecting from flooring to wall finishes, to furniture and artworks that are of good quality and within our budget. I was overseas and cannot be onsite, but she and her team looked after purchasing and installing without us having to worry too much and her team did magic to the spaces. Without question we would definitely work with her again in any future new homes.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Normally interior design comes pretty easy for me...until I had a space I couldn't figure out nor deal with. I contacted Forsyth Home Design and Matt came to the rescue. From the first consult to the finished project he was there. Dealing with contractors, color choices, fabrics, and coming up with built in design options. I highly recommend them for ANY interior project that you might have. Thanks Matt!

Renu is a caring, determined and passionate interior designer. She converted my ‘house' into ‘home’ in no time. Renu listened, payed attention to details, and recognized my design taste immediately. She did my whole home, that is, bedroom, kitchen, living room, balcony - basically everything. Additionally, working with Renu, I got educated in various things about interior designing, de-cluttering, organizing home, where to do shopping for good things for excellent price. She can also advise on other things like junk removal contacts, home cleaning contacts and anything that comes in the way of interior designing. I found her to be a very trustworthy person. After the consultation - I did not need to be home to get interior designing done, I left my spare keys with her without worrying. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Renu and I strongly recommend her consultation and services. I am definitely reaching out to Renu’s help again, whenever required. -Kshitij

For years, we knew we needed to declutter and reorganize our house, but we kept telling ourselves that we should just do it ourselves - but It had been years and we still hadn’t done it. So, We hired Adroit Interiors to help us de-clutter our apartment and help us reorganize and rearrange our entire house - and it was 110% worth it! We have been bragging about their work to all our friends, and have fallen newly in love with our apartment. Having all of this get completed with experts’ help and direction was such a huge relief. We are so much happier in our space now and so glad we worked with them. Michela and Jasmine helped us remove over 300 lbs of junk and clutter. Because they took care of making sure things were sustainably donated, recycled, or otherwise responsibly disposed of it was a stress- and worry-free experience for us. They were amazing at helping us work through not just the physical process of gathering, sorting, and removing things, but they also were amazing at helping us see things clearly and feel good about the process even though it can be surprisingly emotional to eliminate clutter you’ve had for a decade. Michela and Jasmine helped reorganize and better use our space. My wife and I now have an amazingly well-organized closet! My wife wears many more of her clothes than she used to and puts together more outfit combinations than before because she can see all her clothes now. Keeping it clean has been so easy now that they’ve given us such a well-designed setup. When designing her new layout/organization system, they took into account our own personalities and habits to make sure the system we are set up with was one that has been easy to maintain. During the process, Adroit also helped rearrange several of our rooms. They created 3D renderings of various layouts and showed us what was possible with our existing furniture and helped us source new pieces, as well as putting to use items that had been languishing in storage. By the end of our time with Adroit we had so much faith in their abilities that we let them reorganize our entire kitchen without us being involved. No exaggeration, the way they put things away is so well thought-out and considered that when we can’t remember the new home for something, we can easily figure it out because things just make sense now. Cooking and keeping the kitchen clean has become much easier thanks to them. We can not recommend them highly enough - Adroit Interiors lifted a huge weight off our shoulders and we are so much happier in our space than we were before.

When I moved to the SF Bay for a tech job out of college, I was tempted to go the route of IKEA and fill my house with flimsy, boxy, and sterile furnishings in the interest of just having a space to live. James taught me how to parse out my own personal taste (I prioritize functionality, but I also want pieces that will age well, and convey a history and emotion) and guided me toward new and old pieces that made my apartment a reflection of myself, all within my budget. Most importantly, he left me with the tools to make my own judgments on how to outfit my living space going forward. To this day, friends love coming to visit my home and revel in its unique atmosphere. I attribute this to James' skill at helping me discover my own taste and aesthetic preferences.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
