When I had an unfortunate problem with my water heater, Jerry helped me tremendously. Upon calling him at 6:40 in the morning, I figured to leave a message for someone to call me as most businesses do on off hours. To my surprise he actually answered. After explaining my problem to him, he decided to stop by first thing in the morning. I saw him within an hour later as he had promised, before 8. After taking a look, he took the time to explain the problems that could not be mended, so we decided a new one was best. He was very reasonable and professional on his installation price. He also took the time to look at all the additional parts to the water heater, as there were a couple of missteps on the previous unit installed that could have been potential hazards for my family. My wife and I were very appreciative of that. I would absolutely use Jerry's Pro Handyman Service again.

I called Bob to get a quote for water heater pipe leak. After describing the problem, Bob gave me an quick estimate. He came out within couple hours later to fix the leak. While performing the repair, Bob called to let me know it would be an additional $30 to replace the shut off valve. The cost of the entire repair was exactly what he had quoted me. I was very happy with the service and repair. I would highly recommend Muller Plumbing Services.

Brenden was great to work with. My wife and I just bought a home and moved in over last weekend. We noticed that our hot water heaters pilot light wouldn’t stay lit. Brenden was very flexible on time and was able to come out and fix our problem within the same day and was very friendly and knowledgeable. When our hot water heater does finally need a full replacement, we will be sure to hit Brenden up immediately

My hot water heater sprung a leak. I called Jeff Morey Service and he and his partner came out and gave me an estimate. They explained what the job would require and what my options were. We agree on a price and they completed the job in a very timely and professional manner. They even cleaned up after the job was done. I was more that satisfied with the job done and I would recommend Jeff to anyone who wants a quality job done at a competitive price. Thanks Jeff.

First to respond on a Friday late afternoon. He's doing a job in Palm Springs. Tells me on his way back home that he will stop in Redlands to check on a rental unit with no hot water. Arrives at tenants home and calls me to tell me its a thermocouple gone bad in the water heater and that he has one on hand and will be able to repair the water heater. Completes repair and has a customer for life. Great job Luis!

Jay responded promptly to my request. Our water heater stopped working. Jay was very professional in his communication and gave me a rough estimate of how much the charges might be depending on what's wrong with the water heater. What I liked is that They don't charge to come out and diagnose. Once they diagnose the problem, if we decide to have them do the work, they will perform the service and then we pay them for services done. We set an appointment for 2pm the following day. 1:55pm, Keoni (Jay's team member) knocks on our door! They were not only on time... they were early! That alone was amazing, i was already super pleased by their punctuality! They diagnosed the problem and walked us through it. Keoni was very professional and knowlegeable! The best part is... their pricing is reasonable! It was actually the best pricing I've heard from the many places I have called the past few days.. .and the most professional from the moment of communication until the end! I checked out their website also and yelp. There are no negative reviews and I understand why! Swift Water Heater and Plumbing, thank you so much for the amazing customer service and the fair pricing. I appreciate honest and good businesses like you!

What can I say about these guys, that all of the other extremely satisfied customers haven’t already said? I had a leaking 40 gallon water heater and looked at the various companies provided to me by Thumbtack. I was presently surprised to see so many positives reviews on R & R Plumbing on Yelp, so I sent them an email and received a call from Ryan R within 30 minutes. Ryan R asked if I could send him a picture of the water heater, which I told him I could not, but I explained that it was a 40 gallon propane water heater, located in the garage. I requested a quote to replace my 40 gallon propane water heater with 30 gallon propane water heater, because I thought that it would be less expensive, (retired on a fixed income). Ryan R told me that a 40 gallon replacement propane water heater would be less expensive than a 30 gallon water heater and that the cost to run a 40 gallon propane water heater over a 30 gallon propane water heater was very small. Ryan R said that he could fit it in on Saturday, but I said why don’t we just schedule it for next week, (it was still working but leaking). Ryan R said that he would schedule it for the first thing Monday morning, (7:00am – 8:00am). Ryan called at 7:10 am Monday morning and told me he would be there within 20 minutes. He arrived on time and replaced my 40 gallon propane water heater. He also spent his valuable time cleaning up the area around the old leaking water heater, prior to installing the new water heater. Ryan R was able to get the job done very quickly, (you could tell that he has done this a number of times before, ha, ha, ha) he was very efficient and the quality of his work was second to none. Thank You Ryan R for a job well done! Since he was already at my home, I asked him to provide me with a quote on three leaking outside hose bibs, which he did. We will be scheduling a time for him to repair those as well. I could not see calling anyone else for any of my plumbing needs and neither should you.

Very satisfied with the install of my tankless water heater and filtration system. Price was about 5K less than a quote from a big local company. There was a hiccup with the size of equipment needed mostly due to me not adequately describing the house. The adjustments were made with no increase in labor costs.

Great work, they repiped the entire house with copper and replaced the drain, installed a new water heater on a 70 year-old home with 110 degree outside. Miguel Telly, the plumber, and his crew did an excellent job. Bobby, the supervisor, was responsive and accommodating. And the price was great.

Nick repaired some water damage in the floor of my laundry room and kitchen. He tore out the floor, repaired the damage in the subfloor, leveled the floor out and put down new vinyl flooring. He also installed a new water heater and dishwasher for me (which is what was leaking causing the water damage). He was very responsive, answered all of my questions, kept in touch, worked efficiently, and the flooring looks great! I recommend him highly.

Our hot water heater was close to 16 years old and it finally went out. I don’t know anything about hot water heaters. The technician gave me a lot of useful information. They changed out surprisingly quick and I had running hot water within a few hours. I definitely recommend.

Our kitchen hot water wouldn't turn on, and our reverse osmosis filter quit working. Joe scheduled an appointment within one day of contacting us through Thumbtack, which is GREAT. He quickly diagnosed the problems and had the hot water working quickly. We decided to replace the outdated filter with a modern model, which he obtained and installed the next day. He was professional, honest, and quick! His fees were VERY competitive, fair, and budget friendly. Highly Recommended!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
