Angelika’s Work is amazing! We hired her to paint a small bathroom with a scene of looking out from a WWII fighter plane on an aircraft carrier on the ocean (my husband is a history buff). Completely unlike her usual work and she was able to do it without a problem! She is completely adaptable to changes in projects as ideas arise and she is a great artist. She went out of her way to give us a professional product. We’d definitely hire her again.

Debby came highly recommended and I was not disappointed. Although the project was a small downstairs bathroom, Debby approached it as if it was her own bathroom. We discussed my specific desires for the bath and she promptly provided a full and excellent layout drawing along with a variety of fixtures to select from. Possible contractors were interviewed by Debby and myself. Based on the scale of the project Debby was able to steer me clear of those that provided inflated and lengthy project time bids. The selected fixtures were delivered in rapid fashion. Debby was present at the actual initiation of the project and during its execution to provide excellent direction and troubleshooting when necessary to the contractor. Some natural stone received was subpar and Debby quickly arranged for replacement material, assuring the project stayed on schedule and on budget. I would have Debby do another project for me in a heart beat.

I have to say thank you... My wife and I were very intimidated by the whole "design process" idea but Chiara made it easier than we ever thought. She put together a cohesive design for kitchen, dining, living area and master suite. She presented design boards which were extremely easy to understand and visualize and completed them with details, price and specifications for all materials, furniture and decoration. For us was only a matter of giving her plans to our builder for kitchen and master bathroom, follow her instruction and go shopping. The whole project was complete in no time!

I had him come to remove a ceiling fan and install a new ceiling fan and wall switch. Because did such a nice job, I had him remove and install two bath faucets one of which needed more repair than I thought. He also repaired my tub faucet which I knew needed lots of work. If I need anymore repairs, I will definitely call him.

He was always there when we needed him, and found every way possible to design what we wanted while saving us money. He took our project as if it was his own. Stellar job. We highly recommend the FT group and we are blessed to have found him

Words cannot suffice in terms of how Dar has truly blessed our family! I interviewed at least 5 interior designers and Dar’s level of experience, attention to detail, and referrals far exceeded anyone else. I greeted him with a hug when I first saw him because he has this joyful magnetic glow that makes you feel like he is a really good friend. Dar is very punctual; he shows up exactly at the time he gives you and he does not rush you. He is knowledgeable, very attentive, and incredibly patient (we would sometimes have multiple hour meetings). He worked around our schedule with our little ones and never complained about the long hours he put in or how meticulous we were in the designing phase. We enjoyed working with Dar so much that we hired him to stage our house, which put our house over the top in a competitive market. I cannot wait to bring him on board to give our new home the “Dar touch”!

I love working with NXT Design. Not only does their team always bring talented designers to the table, but NXT Design can help to solidify an overall brand experience. This was crucial to us as our shared office spaces rely on a strong brand experience in each location. We always hire NXT Design to create the look and feel of all of our offices. They've created a standard for our brand as we continue to expand. NXT Design is also flexible and very easy to work with. They understand branding and design, as well as the construction and development side of it. NXT Design created several craft furniture pieces for us that added a quality custom look we needed. They are also able to assist with quality control of build out of our spaces. We're so grateful for all of their help.

I started exploring renovations to my apartment in fall of 2014. The core of the renovations were updates to the bathroom and kitchen, but also included smaller modifications including installation of jib doors over closets and the living space and the installation of a built-in bookshelf/cabinet in the living room. Because my apartment is small (600 sq ft) and the rooms are somewhat open to one another, it is important that there be continuity throughout the space and the areas do not look disjointed. I had a vision of what I wanted to accomplish and what I wanted the end result to be, but I needed a designer who could help pull together a cohesive look, source and choose finishes that would tie in with the larger space, source and guide the contractor, etc. Victoria has been a great help in taking the vision I had, putting some direction around it while making sure it ties into the living and bedroom space. She sourced the contractors for me and all of the fixtures/materials. While I always had the option of visiting stone yards with her to see the materials first hand -- it was the last thing I wanted to do in my free time. So when appropriate, Victoria would bring samples to me (paint, wallpaper, tile etc.) and if I didn't deem it necessary, I would make selections via email from photos she would provide. For me this provided a very efficient and cost effective way to work with her. In sourcing materials she has been very good about keeping my budget in mind. An example of this was in choosing the bathroom tile. We had decided to go with a thassos marble. The estimate she received from the original vendor fa exceeded my budget. Rather than sacrifice the look, she found a vendor online that offered the same product at a third the cost. The project is running on budget with some fixtures coming in below cost.

I needed a lot of help moving and getting organized in my new place. The ladies of Design & Order were very helpful in getting me on the right track in my new home. I'm not a messy person, but I had a lot of things that were out of place and things that I just needed to get rid of. I'm happy to say that now there is order in my home and everything has a place where it belongs. They were very friendly and with easy to follow directions on how to keep things organized on a regular basis. I am very happy with the price and time it took to complete everything. More than worth the price!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
