We did a large kitchen remodel with Teak Owl and am so happy we went with them! I interviewed 6 contractors and went with Jonathan from Teak Owl because he seem extremely knowledgeable (some contractors had no idea what they were talking about), calm, and his price was reasonable. We also liked that he was going to do a lot of the work himself and we wouldn't be paying a middle man. We have done 3 kitchen remodels over the years, so it's not our first rodeo. As the project went on, we found Jonathan and his team to be excellent communicators. We talked almost everyday by text or phone, and all the messages were meaningful and professional, we never felt pushed off or gaslighted. These guys have to be some of the most honorable contractors in all of San Diego, pointing out things they did wrong or their sub contractors messed up and always planned to fix it for free, when we didn't even notice it or wouldn't have known better. These guys have old school values with new all the new technology! They kept super close to the budget. We expected them (and all contractors) to try and bill us for minor things and they didn't do that. Change orders were not more expensive than having it in the plan from the beginning, like other contractors would ding you hard for that. The outcome of our kitchen remodel is it looks AMAZING and everything is perfect! Every outlet is level (they use a laser level), everything works perfectly (years of experience to fix things that no one else would have the knowledge), every cabinet is beautiful and works perfectly. To summarize Jonathan and his team were calm, professional, respectful to me as a women (so hard to find!), did everything with integrity and perfection! These guys are the real deal!!

I hired Jonathan and his company to install a custom cabinet in my master bath. The vanity and quartz top with under mount sinks were installed beautifully and look amazing! His employees are respectful, very professional and left the area clean and neat. He was able to finish the project in only 2 weeks, which I really appreciated. I would highly recommend him.

Details: Bathroom • Already have plans - just need cabinets built • No existing cabinets to remove • Yes, I also need the cabinets installed • Home

Teak Owl installed my Home Depot cabinets that I had already ordered before finding them on Thumbtack. They also installed my downstairs vynal flooring. They did a great job. Looks great! They also will work out any issues to get it right with no problem. Very friendly team. Thanks everyone for the hard work.

Part 2 One of these in-person requests resulted in a near hour-long meltdown. Near the end of the project, Jonathan verbally told me that he needed $900 in payment. I knew that we had already paid him 95% of what he was owed and that a lot of the work was unfinished, and I wasn’t as familiar with the scope of the project as my wife. I asked Jonathan to wait for 10 minutes so I could consult my wife. This apparently triggered Jonathan who angrily threatened, “Do you want me here tomorrow? Then I need the payment today.” I never once stated we wouldn’t pay - a point I tried to clarify several times. When my wife did arrive, she then had to spend 45 minutes clarifying this same point. We agreed to pay him $900 that day with an agreement that we’d need to review outstanding work before the next payment. After all this, Jonathan sent a text the next day apologizing for his behavior, claiming “it came from a place of anxiety.” We attempted to be understanding, even after all the difficulties we’ve had over the nearly 6 month project and unwisely decided to continue to try to work with him. When discussing payment for redoing the corner sections for the crown molding, he claimed his price was $1000 if the molding was built with the cabinets - $2300 if built separately. He asked us to consider what a fair price was for redoing this work. My wife told him that we’d need to think about it but would call him that evening to discuss. While on the phone with him later, we went over how much we’d paid, only for him to respond “Oh, you guys already paid a lot closer to the total amount than I realized.” This was a bit shocking, considering his attitude and aggression when it came to the $900 payment and previous remarks about having a ‘pattern of not paying.’ Before we could go over outstanding work, he demanded that we discuss payment for redoing the crown molding corner sections. We explained that we had only asked and agreed to pay for the corner sections (less than 25%, around 5ft) be redone, Jonathan became offended and accused us of taking advantage of his “craftsmanship”. To be clear, this would be $200/ft - a price that was unusually high, especially for a redo. He kept repeating “minimum $1000” on the phone, and again threatened us with the same “Do you want me to show up tomorrow?” line we’d become accustomed to hearing from him. At this point, Jonathan said that he did not appreciate being “scrutinized to this level” and suggested separating mutually. He said he was leaving a lot of money on the table (we had already paid him for 95% of the work, but we were mentally drained and just wanted to end the whole thing and agreed. Even though our kitchen was not finished and we overpaid, we felt a huge weight off our shoulders once we separated. We realized how stressful working with Teak Owl really was at the end. Jonathan claims he welcomes feedback, but he really doesn’t as the project progresses. He takes it personally, gets offended, and loses his temper easily. He says he would not leave until clients are 100% happy, but that is clearly not true. He claims to be “the only one” who can provide “perfect” cabinets, but that’s just not the case - we’ve seen far better elsewhere at this point. We really liked him in the beginning, but seeing his attitude and behavior change toward the end was really disappointing. We are still finding more evidence of shoddy craftsmanship after he quit - many screws loose or unfastened to the crown molding. He even left trash, caulking materials, and the previous cabinet’s crown molding on top of the installed cabinets where we couldn’t see. These findings were the final straw that pushed us to write this review in hopes that we can save someone the headache we’ve gone through over the last 6 months.
