i came to Lynn Collins with very low energy, pain in my back and arm, dizziness and just a general feeling of malaise. She came highly recommended as a Reike Master and since conventional medicine was not alleviating my problems, I thought I would give Reike a try. All I can say is that my health improved exponentially. I left the sessions feeling free of pain and totally refreshed. Ms. Collins has golden hands that work their magic in ways beyond my comprehension. She is loving, caring, and a master at her craft. I would highly recommend her to anyone seeking relief from pain both physical and emotional. I am grateful for her knowledge and expertise. It certainly worked wonders for me!

Bo has treated my 11 year old daughter for a variety of sports-related injuries. The most significant of those was a severe ankle sprain. After acupuncture reduced the swelling, traditional medicine's approach was to put her on crutches, anti-inflammatories and RICE. After one treatment with Bo, she ditched the crutches, was putting weight on the foot, and then played in her soccer game 3 days later. Bo really understands athletes, the pressure they are under AND the injuries they sustain. I have sent several people to Bo and they have reported similar results. I recommend him to anyone and everyone.

I do not even know where to begin. Jessica is not only incredibly intelligent, but she has one of the kindest hearts. I started seeing Jessica because I was having many issues with acne, bloating, and weight loss. Stress was an added factor that was making my symptoms a lot worse. Jessica knew how to recommend specific suggestions in order for me to improve in that area. She provided thorough explanation behind her recommendations and spends a great amount of time getting to know you as a person. Having struggling with these problems for about 3-4 years, I have never felt so much support and willingness to do whatever it takes to get the body back in balance from a professional. At the beginning, I was feeling bloated constantly whether it was before, during, or after meals. I can say that I no longer and feeling that way and I have seen huge improvements within 1-2 months. No matter what you are struggling with or the kind of support you need, I am confident that Jessica will be able to help you the way she helped me. Not only is she an amazing nutritional therapist she is one of the best personal trainers. She gives you the confidence and motivation to be the BEST you.

Danielle at Sacred Sakura Bodywork is a miracle worker! Every time I see her, she always exceeds my expectations, and I feel like I am not only healing on a physical level, but also emotional, spiritual and mental... She discovers my "hidden treasures" of tucked away stagnant energy and stubborn muscle fibers - I sometimes didn't even know I had tension in the places she finds! Something about her special technique and her healing touch just resets me on all levels. Her massages are like natural medicine for my body, mind and spirit... I feel so safe and so comfortable in my sessions with Danielle, that sometimes I even let out a good cry and it feels amazing! Danielle is great about holding the space for healing and she's just got such a positive vibe, you can't help but be healed by her glowing presence. I have recommended my neighbor to Danielle as well, and she commented that Danielle has been able to save her back more than other body therapy she's been trying out. We both drive all the way from Ramona (45 min drive) to see Danielle because she is so stellar and one of a kind! I highly recommend this Beautiful Healing Gem!

I have been a patient of Justin's for around two years and I feel it is time for me to truly express my gratitude toward Justin and the healing has provided for me through his acupuncture. Let me start by saying that I am a Registered Nurse in an ICU that practices primarily Western Medicine. I first presented to Justin with a multitude of symptoms from plantar fasciitis, chronic stomach and bloating issues, back pain, hip pain, depression and anxiety from the process of divorce and overall feeling of being run down and just tired all the time. I had already seen GI specialists and podiatrists, Internal Medicine Specialists, allergists, neurologists, chiropractors and a therapist weekly. I was beyond frustrated and became hopeless that I would never find relief or answers to my ailments and began to think it was possibly all in my head...part of that is true. Justin does more than just provide the typical needle therapy. Over the years he has treated me with acupressure, cupping, auriculotherapy, healing touch/Reiki, and the other traditional eastern modalities that I don't even know how to pronounce. But one skill I am most grateful for is his ability to guide and teach while I'm receiving the treatment. For me it is like a meditation and it was/is this process that I feel helped me to truly start healing. Justin guided me to pay more attention and recognize my thought patterns and would shed light onto how these thoughts impact my body and daily activities. He teaches me about the channels and the Chi, about different types of beneficial herbs, teas and foods I can incorporate and if your lucky he will share one of his original jokes. I could tell you the exact treatment I received that I feel changed my life. It was the moment that I finally gave in and stopped getting in the way of my own healing. I let my guard down, I cried for almost an hour and I "let it go". Justin had asked me if I was holding onto identities that didn't serve me or if I was expressing my true self to the world. I faced my reality and gave permission to myself to become whole again and to be me. In our few years together this happened only three months ago. From that moment on I became aware that it really was a patient/provider relationship. Sure I would get relief every time I received a treatment, but now actually trying to focus on the needles and the energy flow, clearing my mind and inviting the healing to occur it is a completely different experience. I have had enormous relief from my pain, eczema went away, depression is gone and I've stopped seeing a therapist, my GI issues are under control, I sleep better and I feel like I am me and I am enough. I do still have my Western Medicine MD's that I see but I know that I would never have come this far in my journey of healing and self reflection were it not for Justin's wealth of knowledge, kindness, empathy, education and obvious desire to help his patients on their path to optimal health and self discovery. I will be forever grateful.

Rio mezta is absolutely amazing! I can't think of another person I would speak more highly of. How can I even begin to describe my experience working with her as a life coach and reiki master. I came to Rio seeking help when traditional western medicine was not working. My father had passed away and I was faced with many struggles settling a very complex estate. I was so overwhelmed with anxiety I could not sleep. I would go for 3-5 days with no sleep at all. The doctors I saw put me on an endless cycle of the strongest antidepressants and nothing was working. I was so medicated and more depressed as all this medication just heightened my anxiety and did nothing to improve my sleep. Through meditation , reiki, and a program of juice fasting Rio not only helped me completely ween myself off all the western medicine I honestly think she saved my life. I have so much respect for her life experiences. They give her a unique perspective that really allows space for you to learn and grow. She is compassionate, kind, gentle and very wise. The reiki was the most powerful I have ever experienced and the work I ended up doing with her went so far beyond what I came to her for help with. I am happy to call this woman a dear friend :) You have been guided here and you are reading this for a reason! Don't hesitate everyone needs a little help sometimes

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

      • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
      • Nutritional medicine
      • Botanical medicine
      • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
      • Hygiene
      • Counseling
      • Minor surgery
      • Homeopathy
      • Acupuncture
      • Intravenous and injection therapy
      • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

      Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

      • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
        • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
      • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
        • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
        • Do I need a referral?
        • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
        • What will the co-pay be?
        • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
      • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

      Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
