James was amazing - he went above and beyond on installing my vanities, but I also hired him to do all my kitchen recessed lighting and did a great job in bypassing the ballast (or blaster! - inside joke). I will continue to hire James for any other needs I will have in the future.

Electrical work in my kitchen. Houman arrived on time and is very pleasant. It took awhile to find the problem & he was able to explain the problem to me. The cost of the repair was reasonable. If I need this type of work again I will call him back.

Project details: Kitchen backsplash using a marble mosaic with a herringbone pattern. Many people (including me before commencing this project) are under the assumption that installing kitchen backsplash is a breeze. I soon realized that installing backsplash can be a very tedious job which sometimes requires someone with a lot of patience and attention to detail, all of which Robin has! At my first meeting with Robin, I was instantly at ease. He is very easy to talk to and was very helpful in suggesting different options in terms of materials to be used. However, we did run into a few hiccups. After inspecting my walls, he soon realized that we could not install the backsplash onto a painted surface. I was very worried that this would bring the cost of the project up, but Robin was able to find a solution very quickly and all to stay within my budget. Other issues arose, however, Robin was always able to quickly resolve them without tearing into my wallet. In addition, Robin was very respectful and mindful of the cleanliness of our home by ensuring that no dust from sanding our walls would escape the confines of his work space (he put up a really cool barrier!). Robin is an honest and hard-working individual who will never compromise the quality of his work and will never cut corners. Robin takes his time to ensure a finished product that is not only done properly, but done to perfection. Robin takes a lot of pride in his work, he is highly professional and an amazing person to work with. To be honest, he's just an amazing person (and funny too!) I will definitely hire Robin again for any future projects. Thank you so much Robin! You couldn't have made me and my family any happier with our new kitchen backsplash!

We had a leaking dishwasher that apparently had been leaking for some time without our knowledge and caused some water damage. We had him demolish part of our kitchen because the problem was somewhat extensive and put in new cupboards and a kitchen sink, as well as repair some drywall and he did a brilliant job. I will definitely hire Miguel in the future without hesitation. I contacted Thumbtack late Friday afternoon, approx 5-6pm and I saw that I had a response from Miguel by 8.15pm. I replied not expecting a response until the next morning, but instead I had an appt for Miguel to come out and inspect the job the next day and he started work on the following day (Sunday) and completed the job on Monday. Miguel's prices are more than reasonable and I am glad I found him.

I love my floors and people always compliment them when they visit. I was referred by my friend, and have referred him to my many family members, who have all been extremely satisfied. We have been working with Eddie on multiple properties for over 5 years now. His work has ranged from very simple to major remodeling and home repairs (plumbing, electrical, kitchen remodel, tile floors/counter tops, painting, roof repair and more). We really value his honesty, responsiveness and reliability. The guy is personable and he offers good ideas. And his work is very high quality, for very fair rates. A good contractor is a great resource - I would definitely recommend him.

I hired Cova Construction (Martin) to redo my entire 250 square foot deck. It was a tough project, but Martin was able to do it, and it came out perfect. It came out so good, that I hired him to do my entire kitchen, which also came out perfect. I couldn't be happier; Martin is definitely the only person I will hire in the future. He answered all my questions and did even more than I expected. My wife and I couldn't be happier with selecting Cova Construction.

Steve responded quickly to my inquiry regarding putting in a wall mounted dog door. He arrived on the designated day and time; even arriving a few minutes early. He professionally went to work installing my very expensive “Hale” dog door. He protected my kitchen nook floor and outside area where work was to done. His attention to detail and cleanup was great. The dog door needed to be placed under a window, and he was able, with confidence, adjust electrical wires in order to accommodate the door. He is very friendly and his price for this project was very reasonable. I will definitely use him again for other projects that I need done. I am very happy with his work. My photo of this door came out horizontal, instead of vertical, but hopefully it shows how well Steve installed my double wall Hale dog door.

My sister first used MaNa Design back in 2008 (that time the name was slightly different) to completely remodel her bathroom. I asked her few times to give us his beautiful bathroom contractor's phone number. Within few times back and force and misunderstanding spelling and name, I finally submitted my request in here. Surprisingly, we found Mana Design quote. We called Mazi and remembered my sister's bathroom. I shared with that I couldn't have any idea that what I wanted and when Mazi came over to look at the space he immediately began his artistry in suggesting some really fun and beautiful finishing ideas. I actually ended up doing exactly what his first vision was because it was so good! We go to his shiwroom and browed his beautiful collections. Whinin few times, we picked all our materials and he patiantly uploaded them in his artistic computer rendering; so we can see them before even the job started. After we signed the contract he gave us very detailed scheduling and teach us how to review the progress report in Mana Design website. The job started smoothly per plan after the cabinets arrived. His crew was friendly, on time, worked hard and consistently (real important when you're stuck eating out every day until it's done!) I get so many compliments on his work and how beautiful it looks after completion. Now, after a month, I love what he did and I think this was the best design i could ever have for my kitchen. What an investment! I am now about to embark on project #2, my fireplace wall and bathroom. It is no question who I would use all over again. He's just as friendly and creative as the day I first met with him and I'm so excited for the amazing job that I know his business will do again. It's important to find a company you can trust, which Mana Design proved to me. It's also important to have good communication and solid craftmanship throughout the job. I can state with full confidence that you will be so glad you found this gem!! He just GETS IT. It's so rare to find someone who has such experience and expertise when it comes to materials and how to execute it all but also keep a professional working relationship along with being so accommodating and kind. He knows how to take care of his clients, how to communicate the project as it goes from demo to polishing the stainless... what a great experience along with a gorgeous end result.

One day we wandered into Morena and found ourselves talking with Kate about remodeling our bathrooms and possibly our kitchen. She suggested sending John out to appraise the labor cost. Soon we had John, Sami and Mike in our home and a discussion started about all the things we would like and to our amazement we were assured that they could do it all. We were pleased that we could have all the work done without having to shop for additional contractors. We agreed to refinish the kitchen cabinets, replace the kitchen island counter, install a new hood over the cooktop, reface a fireplace, extensive remodel and update of two bathrooms, repaint most of the interior of the house and re-polish all the travertine flooring. Immediately we had a bevy of workmen starting cabinet refinishing, wall and ceiling painting. Work was continuous to completion. Sami was very helpful by suggesting and selecting materials that resulted in a pleasant decor. All problems, which were minor, were corrected in a timely fashion. We were very pleased with the work that Morena Home Design did for us.

Joe and his crew were very clean and professional. He would have completed our project a week ahead of time however we continue to add on additional projects. My husband and I appreciated all of the work that was completed. We had three bathrooms remodeled, ceilings scraped and retextured. We had our fireplace resurfaced and many other things done that included electricial. We are very happy and satisfied with all of the work. We will have Joe and crew back to remodel our kitchen and patio next year. Thank you Joe!!

We hadn't done anything to our home for 30 years, so it was time. My husband had wanted to get granite countertops for the kitchen, since that time. We finally made the decision to do it and after talking to one previous contractor, Phil, from HomeStar, took a look. He didn't give us the hard sell, but had some really good ideas. Our countertops were Formica and we had the original 1983 cupboards. Although not important to my husband the cabinets were what I really wanted to upgrade. Phil suggested replacing them instead of resurfacing, stating it would be just as much or less expensive. Our first bid had demonstrated that was indeed the case. Phil suggested moving the footprint of the cabinets and thereby giving us additional counter space. He made other suggestions about the type of cabinets that would allow us more shelf space and more convenient storage. We had certain requirements that were all met and HomeStar was very willing to make changes to the plans to accommodate our requirements. We were able to pick out the exact granite slabs that we used for the new countertops and the tiles for the backsplash between the cabinets and counter. They replaced the old fluorescent lighting to recessed can lighting that is brighter and much more attractive. It all turned out great and is beautiful. I took pictures during the whole process and sent them to my family and they were truly amazed at the transformation! The timing of the job was perfect and they completed it within the time they said they would. The HomeStar crew were very friendly and professional and extremely considerate to our living situation. We always felt that we were the priority and they worked for us everyday until it was done. Thank you to Phil, Rick and Daniel for working so hard and so considerately. They all took great pride in their work and it showed! They told us exactly what was happening and when so that we could be prepared. When we had questions about the job we would always get our answer, usually immediately, via text. We are very happy with HomeStar and our new kitchen is breathtaking!

Ivan did an amazing job! He installed our Kitchen counter top, Backsplash and Master bath vanity counter top. His attention to detail was right on point. He was meticulous and guided us through the process every step of the way. He helped us make some design choices that we never would of thought of. From start to finish it only took about 3 days. It looks beautiful thanks to Ivan and his team!

We hired Jeff from Rick Dorn Constrution to install some kitchen cabinets in our remodel. We had cabinets picked out already and he recommended some others of better quality for less. Installation took 2 days and he cleaned up after himself. He also pointed out some other things that should be fixed on our project which was greatly appreciated. We would work with them again.

The technician that came to my home was Tommy and he did an excellent job. We had a flood from our upstairs bathroom while everyone was out of the house and it flooded almost every room upstairs and then went through the ceiling and damaged our kitchen, family room and lower bathroom. Tommy came with another technician. They were both dressed very well, clean cut and the first thing he did was give me his card with his direct number on it. He then asked if he could walk through the home with me and he showed me all the areas that were wet and how far up the walls the water had gone. He used a moisture reading tool and he took plenty of photos so my insurance company could see. He explained what the process of getting my home dry would be and what exactly he would do and the time frame he thought it would take. He made sure that I was completely in the loop of everything his team was doing and the entire team were very considerate of our home and our belongings. Tommy went as far as meeting my insurance adjuster back at my home even though it was scheduled during a time that he wasn't supposed to be here. Tommy made sure to keep me in the conversation with my adjuster and himself. I would highly recommend this company should anyone I know suffer from water damage and I kept his card in case I ever need their company again for my own home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
