We were moving from our 3 bedroom condo to a 4 bedroom house. The movers were a party of 4 and a truck who showed up exactly on time. They were very prompt and organized. We had packed most of our loose items in boxes. So they mainly had to focus on the big items. All the furniture was handled with care and neatly wrapped in plastic. They also did a good job of neatly assembling all the furniture at our new house. They made sure all the boxes and items were delivered to the correct room. They were quite friendly and acted very professionally. We had a lot of big items and they made sure the move and assembly was completed within a reasonable time. Overall my experience with MGB has been excellent. I would recommend them to any customer looking to make a hassle free move.

We had a 20 mile move and wanted to get someone who would be able to do the job at a fair price. Tony came by the house himself to give an estimate, was professional, so we chose to go with him and his crew. The guys came a bit late to the job (hey, Southern California traffic...?) and got right to work. Very professional and courteous, they didn't stop working until the job was done. The only recommendation I would make is to ask for a "not to exceed" price. The estimate was a great price, but there was no way the job could get done in that time. Tony honored the "not to exceed" price and we're happily in our new home.

All Round Professional Moving Company sent two guys to handle my long distance move. From Long Beach, CA to the Bay Area. I spent a lot of time talking to Jane who was extremely helpful and explained things like 'double-drive time.' One of the requests I had was that the movers pick my stuff up and drop it off the same day. It's about 5 1/2 hours driving time which they were able to accomodate. I agreed to pay a flat a rate of $1,700, and if the movers took longer than 6 hours to load and unload I would be charged additional fees per hour over. We agreed to have the movers start between 7 am - 7:30am. They should up at 7:45 which was fine because they started the time once they begun. The movers brought boxes, wardrobe boxes, blankets, plastic wrap, tape and dollies. I did most of the packing myself the night before. They used blankets and plastic wrap to protect my furniture. I offered them coffee and waters but they only wanted water. They didn't stop for breaks once. They finished loading at 9:20 am. They arrived at my new place at exactly 6pm. Unloaded within 2 hours so I wasn't charged extra hourly rates. The only thing could've gone better is the payment. When I booked the move I was charged a 50$ deposit to hold my appointment with them. I was told that I would be charged the flat fee we agreed upon later that day; but that didn't happen. Due to work I had to stay in Long Beach for a couple extra days so I did not follow them to my new home. My parents instead were there to help them out. Once the move was finished, the movers asked my parents to pay them. Then played phone tag for the next 20 minutes and spoke to three different people on when I was going to pay. One of the managers called me and said I needed to fill out a payment authorization form. Which I wasn't able to do because it was Sunday at 8pm and I didn't have a computer with me. Long story short I gave them my card number over the phone and had my parents fill out the rest of the form and then texted a picture of the form to the manager. It would've been easier if they had just charged me from the beginning or gave me the form to fill out when I saw them that morning. Other than that everything was great. I haven't seen or inspected my stuff yet but nothing was broken as far as I know! I would definitely hire them again!

Movers were punctual and very professional. The rates were great compared to other quotes. I am very meticulous with my furniture, I noticed after the movers left that some of my furniture and walls got a few scratches. Hence I am giving them 4 stars, but overall, I am very satisfied with their work.

I didn't have a moving company that I knew would be fair and available. I did my research online but came up empty handed. A few days before my move I searched Yelp and found " Thumbtack". Thumbtack connected me with" Larry Quality Movers". Within 30 minutes ( it seemed less ) I received an email response. Larry asked me someone questions on my move and we were able to set up the exact time and place to move me. The day before the move Larry contacted me to reconfirm the time and location. The next day Larry & Dean were at my place prompt. Very smoothly they moved my things out. They got to my new location before I was there and were really to get my things moved inside. Larry and Dean are as professional as they come. They are fair with their pricing no nickel and diming you. You get the exact price that you are quoted, not like some of the other movers adding last minutes things. Larry and Dean thank you for such excellent service I will definitely let others know about your service it was a pleasure working with you!

If I could leave 10 stars I would! These guys were awesome! I needed help the same day that I put in my request and they answered within minutes and met me at the job site within two hours. I had a real mess on my hands with previous movers that I hired and Michaelson Moving came to the rescue! They moved my entire unorganized, jam packed storage unit to a new location where it was all stacked and stored beautifully. They worked with great speed and were very responsive to all of my needs. I have another project within the next month and I will certainly call them. If you want the best call Michaelson!

Both Kevin and Tyrell worked as swiftly as they could. They came prepared with tools, and dollies (during the move, he went to his truck and got another dolly, which ate up sometime). Overall, both movers were professional in language, demeanor, appearance, and were very polite. A few pieces of critical feedback. We had our appointment scheduled at 7:30, and they arrived at 8:00. I do wish they moved a bit faster, because we originally only scheduled for 2 hours, but it took 3 hours, and on top of that my two roommates and I were helping. If you use them, ask them to bring a bigger floor dolly to move more at a time.

Our first movers decided not to show up today and we scrambled together and posted on Thumbtack. These guys responded right away and let us know they were just finishing a job then could come right over. It took 5.5 hours to move but they were very professional and wrapped all of our big items and moved our stuff carefully. Thank you for your help. Hire these guys.

The furniture movers were superb. The only suggestion I would make would be a confirmation of date and time after I paid the deposit. Allen was very helpful and accommodating. Would use them again with no qualms.

Safe N Fast Movers helped move some of my grandmother's belongings into storage after she went into a retirement home. The were as their names says - Safe N Fast. They carefully wrapped up all of her items, and took them to the storage unit. She has years of accumulated fine goods, and they were careful to point out what needed to be wrapped, and were careful with everything. I will be using them again to finish up moving the rest of her items. Thanks again for your help!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
