One of the young videographers from the studio filmed our event and did an excellent job. She was polite, professional and unobtrusive. She brought a sound system with her which we used to give short presentations to the guest of honor. I was very pleased with how adept she was. Now we await the editing of the footage, which is being done in the studio, to produce a DVD of the event. I have high hopes and every reason to believe it will be top notch. They are responsive, clear, accurate and business like in all their communications. I will post another review when we have the finished product. Jennifer from Pleasant Hill

Larry provided outstanding photo and video coverage of our daughter's Bat Mitzvah. He was professional, and captured precious moments other photographers would have missed.

Ilja did a fantastic job with a rather complex set up for a professional 70th birthday party. He made the sound work on a site he'd never been at before, and managed to capture everything during a very busy event. Afterwards he put in the extra work to synchronous audio, video, and slides, plus footage from two cameras. He aims to please and I could not recommend him more highly. It was great to work with a local Berkeley vendor too.

We were on the fence about hiring a videographer for our wedding but so many people suggested it. I was happy to find Nicholas on Thumbtack. He was right in our price range and by the looks of his website, he was pretty good at what he did as well. We booked him several months in advance but he was always quick to get back to me any time I had questions. I really appreciated that! The wedding day went well, they showed up on time and ready to go. The only thing I personally would have done differently was meet beforehand. With us living so far apart, we didn't get a chance to meet in person and I think that would have helped my comfort level a little more. But they did great work, stayed long enough to capture all of the great moments and made sure to include everything important to us. I was very surprised at how quick we received our highlight video back and fell in love with it. I watch it every day if not several times a day. Nicholas did a wonderful job capturing a day that will forever be the best day ever for us :) He comes highly recommended!

My experience was an excellent one. Erik Holsinger helped me with a self-promotional video. I was told about a job offering Sunday to be due the following Friday, which involved sending a 5 minute video. I approached videographers the very next day - Monday, and Eric got me in on Wednesday. He came to Berkeley - we started the filming around 12:30 and were finished by the early afternoon. Erik edited it and was done by Thursday, leaving me plenty of time to review it before Friday. I was very impressed with the service I received. He was the only one to reach out proactively (by phone) and did so with a very clear outline of what he could offer - confident but not pushy. We had a number of conversations before he came around about what I wanted, and he was kind and encouraging. I think what most impressed me was his no fuss, can-do attitude. He clearly has experience with public speaking - he knows what and what not to say in front of a camera and how to get to the meat of what you want to say, while getting the essence and character of the person. This, from my own experience, requires tremendous skill. I appreciated Erik's directive coaching, which is exactly what I wanted, but he was soliticious of my needs and did so with warmth, humor and great generosity. I felt he genuinely cared about what I was doing, and felt he got me. Oh, and lastly, the end product was great. It was professional and had just the right amount of graphics and extras (and was just under 5 mins). I went with Erik because I liked his work. He has a confident, intelligent and sophisticated style, that puts in what is necessary, but doesn't add stuff just to be slick and clever (which in my experience mostly back-fires). Furthermore, his pacing, timing and editing is smooth, which having had some editing experience in the past, I know is what makes a great video. I will highly recommend him to folk, and hope you do too! I really don't have anything to suggest or improve. He was a complete delight to work with. Thanks for the opportunity to review.

They are great videographers. They made a wonderful highlight video. When I was worried it was a little shorter than I hoped, they helped by giving us some b roll footage to allow us to see the other special pieces. Appreciated them capturing expression /moments and peaceful views in nature. While many captured moments here and there, they were able to really get the emotions at the moment. They made our Santa Barbara wedding a great experience!

I hired Keida day before a wedding for my sister in law. Which we didn't expect we would need one. He was SO accommodating and also went above and beyond to stay a bit longer than discussed for our event. He is so fast, efficient and very friendly. He came right on time and due to the last minute booking from phone consultation to day of, he worked with us the best he could. His example works were much better than the other videographers who gave a rate to our budget price. My gut told me to trust him, pay the extra and be his first client for Thumbtack. It was beyond what I expected and he did an excellent job and more! I wish I could give more stars than 5!

Working with Rand has been an incredibly rewarding experience! Being someone with no videography experience, Rand is an amazing creative partner and really helped us develop our ideas for our new recruiting video. Our project took a few unexpected delays due to scheduling issues, but he has always been so understanding and flexible throughout all of the back and forth. I would definitely choose to work with him again given an opportunity, and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a videographer. I can't wait to debut the finished product! Thanks for all your help, Rand!

Jim is a great videographer!!! After speaking with several videographer, Jim was the ONLY one I liked, besides the fact that his portfolio is exquisite. His professionalism is unlike any other. Jim was prompt with his responses and easy to work with. Although we have not seen our videos yet, I am sure they will be amazing. Jim was patient and understanding when we started to run behind on time during our function. He assured me that everything would work itself out and it did. Jim constantly checked in with me throughout the day to make sure he captured the right moments for our videos. He clearly is very good at his job. Prior to our function, I recommend Jim to a family member who also hired him. There event took place several weeks before our, so I had a chance to see Jim in action. Jim did not disappoint. My family member was very satisfied with Jim's work. I spoke to Jim during this event and even then he gave me several pointers in order to make sure my event went smooth. I can't recommend him enough! Thanks Jim. Frank R.

We hired a total of 3 videographers for the event and Arnell was by far the best! His equipments were professional, with 2 cameras as opposed to just one and followed the speaker on stage very gracefully. He was also a great guy to work with over all- very sharp and on top of things. Super responsive and professional. We were very happy to get the great quality video and have a new videographer we can now count on. Thanks Arnell!

We had a tight timeframe to line up a videographer, so the responsiveness along with the quality of their work allowed me to engage with The Royal Roost quickly and confidently. This project was fairly straightforward, but from the coordination, to editing through final delivery, I couldn't have been more satisfied.

Our experience with Nathaniel far exceeded our expectations. My wife and I hosted a family gathering at our home to reveal the sex of our new baby. He was taking pictures and videos the entire time. As with many photographers/videographers you never know what you're really going to get. Nathaniel was non-intrusive and blended in at the party which was refreshing. Now for the final product. Much to our surprise the very next day we had our video from him. It brought tears to both of our eyes. We cannot wait to share it with our family and most importantly our son. The video captured all the great moments at our party from the food, the drinks, the laughs and the people. My wife and I strongly recommend his services. Not only is he great at what he does, but he is a personable down to earth type of guy. Thanks Nathaniel.

Gary Magill is a great videographer at a reasonable price. I had a lot going on the weeks prior to the wedding and the morning of the wedding so unfortunately I did not have much time to talk to Gary, however, I was lucky enough that I didn't need to. He was willing to travel, arrived at the wedding before I even did, and took great initiative with very little direction from me. I did not notice him at all during the ceremony or reception, yet he was able to get great shots. We received the video soon after the wedding and absolutely love the highlight clip. I would definitely recommend Gary Magill.

Unfortunately I hired Clifton to commemorate my husband's funeral and repass. Although it was a difficult time he was attentive to my requests and I was pleased with the results. The video was professional, editing was seem less and additional footage tasteful. My only regret (which was my responsibility)is that I wish I had more of an idea of what possibilities and upgrades (like additional videographers) would have looked like. Had I realized, I would have had additional camera angles of such an honorable service.

I used Wedding Video Films and I can say I am very glad I did. It was a bit hard finding the right videographer as we only had one chance to get this right. Soleil came in and eased us from the beginning and pretty much took over while still giving us full creative power. We let him do his magic and the final result was really special. We loved our highlight reel. Every time we see it, it makes us relive our wedding day all over again. We added drone footage and don't regret it, it created a whole new dimension I didn’t even notice at the day of the wedding. We love how they captured the smiles and emotions and the right moment and made it come together so nice. Thank you Soleil for capturing our special moment Oscar & Miriam

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
