I used Thumbtack for the first time, and needed laminate flooring put down in our baby room. GB Construction, Emmanuel, responded first. We talked over the phone, he was very professional, and even came out that same evening to see the layout of the room. His quote was very reasonable, and him and Raul completed the project. They were time efficient and cleaned up well afterward. I would definitely use them again for future projects, and would recommend their work.

Raul immediately put me at ease with what I thought would be a difficult task of replacing a large section of laminate flooring. I knew he would have to remove most of the flooring in that room to redo, but he assured me it would be no problem. His pricing was very fair, he did an excellent job. I would definitely recommend him!

Max was a professional young man who knows his job well. He came in and evaluated the project not only to his benefit but ours as well. Listened to what we had in mind and mentioned a few ideas of his own. We had a poor poor poor tile job done in our bathroom (shower and flooring) and kitchen (flooring) a couple years ago and it brought problems not only like the appeal of it but also mold and cracks, now that we are COMPLETELY satisfied with that we will move on to having other areas of our house redone and will be hiring Max and his team!

I would have loved to give Ben 5-Stars and he came so close. I had hired Ben to replace my existing 14 year old laminate flooring for ~300 sq. ft. area in my downstairs living and dining room with a new one. Ben's quote was really reasonable and he was very responsive in his communication. Ben had agreed to pickup the baseboards from Lumber Liquidators and he did - but instead of 5 1/4" one he got the 3 1/2 inch one - which was OK, since he adjusted the price for it. My biggest concern was that he was not adequately prepared and did not glue down the transitions since he ran out of caulk. He asked me to glue the transitions down and I eventually did after about a year of it popping up and people tripping over it and by the time I did it, it was a bit deformed. I am sure that this was a oversight on his part, but his overall craftsmanship was really great. The floors really look great and the installation was solid. If only he had finished the small stuff ... I would have given him 5-Stars! Given my experience, I would still highly rate Ben and would ask you to consider him and give him a chance. Cheers!

We hired Maks to paint the interior of our home and to put in laminate, and tile flooring. His work was excellent for the price he charged us. Maks was very professional and handled his work in a methodical manner. He briefed us on what his plan was for the entire project and kept us posted throughout. Maks not only met his deadline, but finished early. I highly recommend hiring Maks for whatever flooring and/or painting projects you may have. Kevin

My wife and I had been looking to get our hardwood and tile replaced in our house for some time. We have a 2 story 1800 sf home in Folsom and wanted every surface replaced with wood laminate and tile. We received several offers to come by and quote, but in the end we chose Mark from Floor Craft because of these succinct factors: Straight forward quote. Quoted just the work and allowed us to choose the flooring store and materials for ourselves (although he did have plenty of suggestions too). Mark worked with the flooring vendor we chose to make sure all materials arrived on time. Mark's years of experience. Mark could do wood laminate and tile + installed three new low-flow toilets as well as dedicate time to making the stairs look perfect. Mark was local and non-corporate. While the final results took a bit longer than we had set our expectations on (Mark is a one man show, so 1800 SF is not a job that was going to get done in two weeks) we knew this going in and so adjusted our expectations as we went along. In the end we are happy with the work he did and the house looks 100% better that we imagined. We would certainly recommend Floor Craft to anyone looking for a local flooring contractor that is not going to break the bank and yet provides results that, in the end, meet expectations.

We recently hired Juan to install laminate flooring for our downstairs family room, living room, and kitchen. We added the staircase and upstairs hallway to the task before the project started. Juan was very flexible and professional. He provided us a very reasonable quote and worked super hard to help us find the right floor color/pattern. Juan and his crew did an amazing job! We had family over for July 4th and everyone loved our new floor. We are extremely satisfied with the installation and will highly recommend Juan's flooring services to our friends and family in the future.

We called H & S to help us with a new laminate floor. After hours of their help with material selection and lay out we finally found a product that met our needs. The guys installed it over the weekend for no extra cost in order to have it ready for our family reunion. The floors look great and were the talk of the party. We highly recommend H&S.

Gennadiy got back to me within, maybe, 5 minutes of my initial search and I was able to get a quote for a floor installation easily...sent him the square footage and photos of the 2 rooms where the new laminate flooring was to go, took a look a another quote from someone else as well as Gennadiy's reviews, and decided KGA was getting the job. I hit a sweet spot in his schedule and he was able to install the flooring the next day which worked great for me. He is a nice young man and was a true professional...showed up on time, completed the job perfectly, cleaned up afterward, and the price was both competitive and fair. I couldn't be more pleased with the job, and not only would I recommend him to anyone, I have already decided to have him install flooring in another room, and will likely have him take care of some odds and ends around here that I just never have the time to get to. In short, as long as Gennadiy is around these parts, he'll be the first person I call for any construction needs.

George is a one man show and hardworking one at that. He did an excellent job of replacing vinyl floor with tiles at our condo for Kitchen. We did hit a snag on first day but he covered for it on day two so we are very happy. We will definitely use him for next assignment.

Zothex Flooring – this business knows the Art of Flooring! From the moment we met with the owner, at the showroom, Clayton, we were put at ease with his professionalism, kindness and knowledge of various flooring product lines, etc. Clayton then connected us with one of his flooring consultants, Peter, who did an outstanding job! Peter helped us determine the appropriate laminate product selection and fit for our home. Prior to the job, we were thankful Peter brought what we selected as well as a few other floor samples to view at our home. He oversaw this big project wonderfully and efficiently from beginning to end. Communication was key. Peter then lined up a great crew, very efficient timeline for the installation, and completed on time. The installation crew (Christiano, Paulo & Rafael) were professionals, respectful of our home and did an impeccable job with our laminate floors. The install crew paid close attention to details, transitions, and their pride shows. All Zothex staff encountered had positive attitudes including the receptionist. Our whole house is complete now with the two new vinyl laminate selections and looks great! We are very pleased and highly recommend Zothex Flooring to my friends, my family or anyone else. Loving our new floors!

Tried and True installed my laminate flooring. He did an amazing job! Not a squeak or flaw. He used every piece possible. Which saved me 6 boxes of laminate that I returned. That was $400 back in my pocket! Thank you for being professional, timely and polite! You are now my go to for any repairs or new projects!

Jason was extremely professional and easy to work with. We interviewed a lot of flooring people before deciding on Vineyard Floors. Vineyard Floors and Jason were the only ones who brought a portable showroom and worked with us to find the right flooring and look for our home. We started with carpet in a couple bedrooms and one room with laminate and now are planning to have Vineyard Floors put flooring in our whole house.

Spoke to Mike on a Tuesday in October 2016 and explained a scheduled floor guy from Craigslist had flaked on me. He was able to squeeze me in and started on installing my floors the very next day! His workers Jaime and Javier worked very hard and completed the install of my luxury vinyl planks and baseboards in 5 business days. I'm very happy with their work and would refer them to anybody needing floors installed.

Tom came out in a timely manner to give me an estimate to rip out my old laminate floors and replace with tile. Once I gave the OK, work started promptly and was finished in less than a week. The quality of the install was great and i was pleased with him and his team. I have an issue pop up with a loose tile after all the heavy rains, he came out the same week and fixed it without charge. I would definitely consider using Tom and his team again.

John has worked at our home to from tearing out old carpets and placing laminate flooring throughout our living room and kitchen, to remodeling the fireplace with tile and giving it a unique style. He is very efficient, professional and a hard worker. John made sure that we were satisfied with the job and materials used and talked us through everything so we were aware of final product. I would highly recommend John for any home improvements or simply mounting our television (he did that as well).

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
