As a GC myself, Fady has been a great architect to work with. He has a commanding knowledge of building codes and regulations which helps keep the builder out of any trouble. He also pays close attention to details when it comes to his drawings. Any questions that do arise throughout the course of a job, his response time is immediate and always looking to help get the job done as efficiently as possible.

AGA did a room addition for us in our Hollywood Hills home. This project included a bedroom with walk-in closet and full bathroom. AGA construction was a great choice for our room addition. They took our dream and made it into reality. We just had a vision, but with the help of the AGA project managers and architect, we were able to bring that vision into fruition. AGA project managers met with us several times before we signed a contract with them. AGA was willing to meet with us and make sure my husband and I were very comfortable with the project and all the steps that were needed. They answered all the questions we had, gave us expected time frames, suggestions of finishing materials that we should buy with regards to popular styles, quality ranges, and price differences. In terms of actual construction, the project was seamless and flawless. The preparation for the project was really professional. The project did not start until all the materials, vanities, and options were chosen. This allowed the project to be executed in a smooth and clean process with absolutely no hiccups. The job was done in a fast and swift manner, yet quality was not compromised at all. Everything came out evenly and straight, and the finishes were all very sturdy and solid. With the extra square footage AGA built for us, we added a lot of value to our home. We have gotten a lot of compliments and even a few offers to purchase our home. Thank you AGA on a job well done. We are very satisfied with the outcome, and we will continue to use AGA in the future.

Reza is outstanding in every way!! He took over a project from another Architect for us who couldn't provide the City of Santa Monica what they needed to issue a permit for many months, so we were stuck. Reza was quick efficient and worked through the issues diligently, so that we received the permit within a few weeks after we hired him. Reza is very professional, and we will ask him to work with us on all future projects in California. We will recommend Reza to all our friends and business associates. Reza provides very good and very fair value, he is very honest and efficient. We are thrilled to have found him on Thumbtack!!

Roland and Yukie did a phenomenal job - we were on a tight schedule and needed to take an empty roughly 2000 square foot space and transform it into a furniture showroom for our company and hired Scales Lab Architects to manage the project completely - they did a great job in analyzing our brand and presenting us with a layout that they felt would be best for the showroom, while also acting as construction managers and hiring contractors from their professional network to carry out the vision impeccably. Their professionalism, diligence and positive attitude made Scales Lab Architects a pleasure to work with from start to finish and we couldn't ask for a better final product with our showroom.

After the first meeting and explaining to the architect what I wanted with a simple, yet functional patio cover, he took the concept and presented the plans, ready to have the city's approval. It is very nice to work with people that show skin the game.

Stan was referred to me by Thumbtack. This was my first time even hearing of Thumbtack, let alone using them! Boy, what I've been missing! I chose Stan from the substantial list of referrals because his price was reasonable, and he seemed personable and easy to work with. I felt that he would be dedicated to the project as he went the extra mile by speaking w/ the city about the project before I even hired him. I made the right decision in hiring Stan! He was all of the above and more. He has continuously been a source of strength and support to me on my project, even well beyond the time his job has been completed, which was done in a swift and excellent manner. I highly recommend him!

Diane has done a whole home remodel for my family in the early 1990s and a 1000 sq. foot separate building on a different property in about 2012. She is a good listener when it comes to understanding the clients needs. Her understanding of how a space will be used is clearly reflected in her modern designs. She has a tremendous attention to modern detail, and supervised the construction to ensure compliance with her design. I was very pleased with the finished results on both projects and enjoy living in these spaces. She has excellent skills on state of the art architectural CAD software that allows her to create very detailed plans and specifications. This is critical during both the bid and construction phases. She has a depth of knowledge regarding building materials and finishes that help to create a coherent aesthetic design. She is LEED certified and sustainable development is clearly part of her philosophy, Her services include construction observation as part of the fee and it is well worth it. She is on site making sure the construction is per specification and correctly detailed. I can't emphasize how important that is. She is a true professional and a joy to work with. I recommend her without hesitation.

      About

Ruben S. Ojeda Architects provides full professional design services, specializing in new and remodeled residential and small commercial buildings, along with retail and showroom interior design. This company has been in business for 20 years. Some of our projects have been recognized for design excellence and featured in local and international publications. Helping each client realize his dream while working within his budget is a primary goal.

      About

We take architecture as a psychological issue - the piece of land, an edifice or a structure as being utilized the same way it should create certain emotions to the viewer, mentally connecting it with the state of sculptural expression. Our design work is based on extensive brainstorming, where depending on the type of client, category building, materials chosen, landscaping, and urban attitude a particular process methodology is implemented. Each project is approached with its own specificity, uniqueness, and the process of designing is the one which brings to it its own architectural handwriting. In the Studio 3D, different computer software allow exploring in very depth each detail and not a little corner is left without being carefully studied. We thoroughly believe also in the sustainable design philosophy that this is the future where architecture goes, and we stay firmly behind it. The sustainable architectural design has to go hand by hand with renewable energy, and give a better future for the next generation. The project budgeting and value analysis are looked under scrutiny to be able to lower the cost as much as possible, without compromising the quality of the design in both highly-competitive private and cost conscious government sectors. Working tightly with cost estimators and surveyors, the office takes it with main responsibility that the project is executed precisely, within the budget, and in the time frame.

      About

Founded in 2004 by Mark Bittoni, Bittoni architects is a full-service architectural practice predicated on the simple notion that architecture is both an artistic and social endeavor and, with that, has the potential to enhance the way we experience the world around us. Our work is idea driven with a strong emphasis on research and analysis. It is our belief that with a thorough investigation of the problem, context, and culture, we can create solutions that give way to new forms of expression and interaction that are unique to each of our projects. Our goal is to unlock the latent potential within each project. We are not interested in styles, but rather an awareness that each project begins in a particular moment in time and is anchored by relevancy and physical and cultural immediacy.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
