To put it simply, you can spend hours and hours researching dog trainers but you will only be uneccessarily wasting time...you will not find better than Raquel. When I contacted her seven months ago, I was pretty desperate to find a solution for my Argentine Dogo's separation anxiety issues (incessant barking/howling/destructive behavior while I was at work... going crazy with excitement and jumping all over me to the point of scratching and bruising me when I arrived back home). Not only did she give me the tools and knowledge to completely alleviate these issues permanently, she did it within a two hour span of time AND showed me how to completely eradicate other behavioral issues my furry child and I were dealing with such as his leash pulling and throwing agitated, boredom-induced barking fits when I'd try to take him to outdoor, dog-friendly restaurants. Thanks to Raquel and her amazingly effective instruction, my pup and I constantly receive compliments and "ohhhs and ahhhs" in regard to how remarkably well behaved he is, and he's so quiet when I'm gone (no more separation anxiety nightmares :-)) that my neighbor (who was at his wits' end with the constant barking) said he thought for sure I had found a new home for Che (that's my handsome furry boy's name ;-)). I cannot thank Raquel enough and every time I receive compliments about Che being such a well behaved guy, I always tell people it's because of Raquel's help and I pass her info along to them. She has a wonderful gift and she's helping to enrich and improve the lives of each and every person and animal she works with. Don't take my word for it though...call her and see for yourself! :-)

Maggie is my fourth dog. I have had trainers with each of the dogs. Never have I had a more competent, compassionate and professional trainer as Karen. She taught Maggie to walk loose leash and not enter a room before more or my husband. I used to have to carry her everywhere. She's only 9 pounds but it got old really fast. I also had Karen board/train her for two days. She came back a different dog. When Karen came today for the beginning of training her to be a therapy dog. When Karen came for the beginning of training her to be a therapy dog, she got so excited when seeing Karen. Karen knows how to be firm yet kind with dogs. Dogs know it. I couldn't recommend anyone more highly than Karen. She is the best of the best. Barry K. Sherman Oaks

John is one of the best dog trainers that I've met. I have a three year old recently adopted American Eskimo with issues such as leash pulling, nipping people who doesn't give him attention, and general insecurity issues. I have seen other dog trainers trying to get help, but without result. John took the time to get to know my dog and evaluate him based on what he saw and previous conversations with me. He helped me understand my dog and what I need to do to help him. Apparently, I have a dog that thinks he's an alpha and he taught me how to address this. I need more classes to address my dogs leash pulling and more, and I am glad that John didn't try to address all issues in one session because I don't think that would have been very helpful in the long run. Training a dog is not done in an hour, it takes more time than that. I highly recommend John.

Denise was able to show me how to get my Old English Sheepdog to respond to basic commands, walk in a calm manner, and behave while in the house. Her private training of Sally and myself led to these things being accomplished in rapid manner. Sally turned from being an excitable, out-of- control dog into a peaceful, obedient pet. I highly recommend Denise as being an expert human and dog trainer.

Duane is a superb dog whisperer!!! I have worked with other dog trainers before but I have never met someone like Duane. It seems he has an incredible sensibility and ability to read each dog and know how to communicate with them. I just got my Stella, 5 year old English Bulldog, returned home after 5 weeks of board and training by Duane. Stella was very aggressive with other dogs and small children. She had virtually no obedience training whatsoever and never socialized with other dogs. I always had to warn approaching strangers, especially if they had a dog, that Stella was "not so friendly". Then a 8 week old chocolate Lab puppy came into our life and turned our home life upside down. Stella was very jealous and aggressive towards the puppy. My poor puppy was scared to death and something had to be done. Duane took Stella and trained her in his home for four weeks and the fifth week, I sent Henry to Duane for a week to be with Stella so that they could get acquainted and may be bonded. Frankly, I wasn't too sure whether Stella could change. I had a back up plan for the puppy in case the board and training with Duane did not work out. I am so happy that Stella and Henry are back home and they get along so beautifully, thanks to Duane!! It is so wonderful to have two dogs in the house without any tension. Duane is very professional, honest and very easy to work with. He answered all my questions, my numerous phone calls were never ignored, and I felt at ease about the whole process. It is clear to me that Duane loves and cares deeply about the dogs he trains and dogs love him back. Duane followed up with the second visit to our home today, and both Stella and Henry were so happy to see him. Stella actually wanted to follow Duane out as if she wanted to go with him. I have never seen Stella act like this with anyone outside her own family. We are so pleased and happy that we found Duane and can not recommend him highly enough. He is the real Dog Whisperer! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Duane!!!

Steve is an incredible, elite master trainer. He holds the key to unlocking all of your dogs' best attributes. He has done wonders for my dogs, and I have witnessed him doing even more for others. There's nothing that this man can't fix about your dog. But, you must be willing to put in the time and do what it takes to maintain. I have two mixed breeds (brother and sister) that have severe separation anxiety, when they weren't near each other. They were completely co dependent on each other, fearful and extremely sensitive to everything around them. They would whine and bark when separated. Steve had them for less than two weeks, and now they have no problem, at all being separated. He taught me how to build their confidence, and help them succeed. Which has made training them in obedience much easier. They now have the will to work, and the desire to learn more. As do I. He has inspired me so much that it has now become my passion, and I am now his apprentice. What I love most about the way that he trains, is that he is very gentle and patient with the dogs. He is by far more concerned with the dogs' well-being than anything else. He can be pretty tough on the owners, but once you come to realize why, you really can't be mad at him. The issues that your dog has, are typically there because of you. Your dog is a mirror of yourself. Once you've accepted that, you can then both change together, building the bond between you and your dog even stronger. But, you must be part of the change in order for it to work. Wendy is my senior master trainer, and I have learned so much already from both of them. They have taught me beginner and advanced obedience, behavior work, tracking, scent detection, how to show in AKC competitions, how to train movie dogs, and much more. Through the skills that I have acquired from them, I am now teaching my own classes and training dogs daily, using the same incredible methods that these amazing dog trainers have taught me. I highly recommend Steve and Wendy, and all of their trainers to anyone who truly cares for their dog.

We needed help with our 4 month old English bulldog. She came in the same day we made contact and gave us great tips and pointers from food, vets, and training. She was really patient, kind and professional. She knew what she was talking about and is perfect if you are looking for a local dog trainer. Thus far we have met just once but I highly recommend her and we plan on having her back to our home for additional training.

Arturo is such an amazing trainer!!! He has helped and coached us on how to control our dogs aggression. He not only trained our dog but taught us how to properly train her. He’s helped restore confidence both in us and our dog to allow her to be her loving social self again! We could not have done it without Arturos dedication and patience!

I had a consultation with Dave. My fur babies took to him as soon as he walked in. He was very calm and professional and very honest. He didn’t come in with a pitch of why he would be the best trainer, we just had a conversation and it felt very natural and comfortable. After hearing my concerns, he told me what he thought the problem was and how we can try to fix it. I am confident that he is the best trainer for my dogs and I will start training with him very soon.

Ron is the best dog trainer ever! His love for dogs shows in his gentle, calm, and effective training techniques. He trains dog owners just as much as their dogs, and he has successful results. Under Ron's tutelage, my shelter pit bull blossomed from a fearful, anxiety-filled dog into a dog with confidence and self-esteem. She has really come a long way, in large part thanks to Ron and his teachings. Ron is also the least expensive dog trainer I have encountered. His rates are reasonable, for such high-quality training.

Leo has been my personal trainer for nearly 16 years. During that time, his instruction has been professional, caring, and geared to my personal needs and capabilities. I feel that my overall health, strength, stability, and knowledge that I have about my own physical abilities are due in large part to my association with Leo. I appreciate his accommodating my schedule, the flexibility of our sessions, and the comfortable, friendly vibe of our time together. He not only works on strength training, but is also able to incorporate core work, balance, compound exercises, hand/eye coordination, flexibility, endurance, and nutrition information, all with encouragement and positive reinforcement.

If you are looking for a reliable, professional dog trainer that gets you results, Ayumi is hands down the best in the business. Our little fur monster, Rollie, had social behavior issues when we first adopted him. After being recommended by a friend, we decided to put Rollie through Ayumi's program. I really wished I would've found Ayumi earlier. We discovered a whole new side of Rollie we had never seen before. The transformation is truly incredible. Thank you, Ayumi!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
