Daniel was very professional and went above and beyond to give the tutoring help I needed in a somewhat obscure math topic, which included him spending time researching and working through the problems before the tutoring session to ensure that he could answer all of my questions. I would recommend Daniel to anyone looking for a quality math tutor who invests himself in your success. Thanks again for all the help Daniel!!

Working with Eric and Elite Home Tutoring could not have been a better experience. Eric was amazingly responsive to any questions I had and he paired my son with a terrific tutor (Bri) for his ACT test. The prices are very fair and I will definitely be using EHT again.

Viva test prep tutors came to our home and helped raise my son's ACT test score FIVE points over six ninety minute sessions. The tutor was friendly, professional and related well to my teenager. My son had been procrastinating his test prep for months, so I finally decided to light a fire under his butt and hire a tutor. That little bit of extra accountibility made a big difference, and his tutor's command of the material and test taking strategies helped my son to tackle the test with a lot of confidence. I highly recommend.

Blas has been tutoring my 13 year old grandson for the past few weeks who is struggling with math. My grandson appeared overwhelmed at first but just this past Monday, he seemed more confident and relaxed. Blas is very patient and knowledgeable and he is doing an excellent job with my grandson, not just with math but also with his confidence level. My grandson looks forward to his tutoring two days a week. I would highly recommend Blas.

Mr. Reid is a great tutor. He helped me get a better understanding on how to solve quadratic equations, completing the square and on exponential functions. I have scheduled to meet with him once a month for more tutoring.

I hired Ahmed for Math tutoring for my son who is taking the PSAT and SAT this coming fall. He had rave reviews about Ahmed. Ahmed was patient, incredibly knowledgeable, and able to explain the concepts to my son in an absorbable manner. I will continue using him for the rest of my son's high school math needs. Highly recommended.

I am very impressed with the quality of service I received with Arbor Tutors. I love how you can split your hours between different tutors. I was able to use some hours for chemistry, some hours for math and some hours for English.

I hired JD to tutor me in my Statistics class. He is an outstanding tutor and gave me the most professional sessions I could imagine. I really struggled with the material, as I had attempted the class on my own once before. With JD's help I am currently at an A- with a week left of class. Thanks JD!

Anybody who needs a private tutor should use Premier!!!! The team really makes you feel like you're taken care of and the tutors are amazing. My daughter used one of their tutors for the SAT and she exceeded her target score. She had some remaining hours after the test so they matched us with a tutor for AP Physics and he was truly great. Very knowledgeable and professional and was able to answer any questions she had. I will continue to use premier tutoring throughout the rest of my daughter's education.

Andrew was a fantastic resource for me during my applications to graduate school. I did private tutoring with him for the GRE as well as sought tutoring from him for my personal statements for graduate school. He is intelligent, attentive, thorough in all of his work, and truly cares about the success of his students. He also makes learning fun and although studying for the GRE can be a mundane task, somehow made it more interesting for me. He followed up with me when I still needed more resources and follows up post-GRE to see how I am doing in my career. I highly recommend and endorse Andrew!

Mr. Frost is an excellent tutor. He patiently explained subjects in Calc that were beyond my understanding. I also had Mr. Frost tutor me in staticis and he clearly explained and throughly answered all my questions about the material. He is super approachable and makes the subject matter understandable. Mr. Frost took time to answer all of my questions and cared about my academic performance in the class. I highly recommend working with him! His rates are reasonable and he was flexible with scheduling.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
