Andres and his crew took only 2 days to till, prep, install an entire new irrigation system and lay sod for a yard that is over 1000 sq ft. Others quoted 4 days at a higher cost. We are very pleased with the final results and would highly recommend Andres and his Regs Tree and Lawn Services for any of your future landscaping needs! A++

Matt was great! Arrived on time and was very helpful. Although it turned out to be a much bigger problem than what I originally thought it was, and had to call in a plumber, Matt stayed to make sure the plumbers knew what had happened while he was there. I appreciated the time and genuine interest in making sure the issue was resolved! Will call you again if I ever do have a problem with the landscaping irrigation!

Chris was on time for the estimate and very knowledgeable. He scoped the bid out and provided great detail for what he would use in the irrigation installation job. Ultimately, we had to put the job on hold, nothing having to do with Chris, but I would recommend him based on his experience and ability.

Juan is the real deal. Knowledgeable, friendly, professional and honest about what your problem is. He came back out to review an issue that turned out to be my error resetting an irrigation timer. I had him do a few other things that he suggested with sprinkler locations etc. No hard sell or up selling; just honest recommendations that ultimately resulted in my lawns looking the best they ever have. I mow my own lawns but he has offered a deal to take over the work at a very reasonable price. I may have to do this eventually. First time using Thumbtack and it won't be the last. Great job.

I am very pleased to have hired Adrian/AG Landscaping! Pros: hard-working, courteous, prompt with communicating back and forth, knowledgeable, efficient, reasonably priced and mindful of prices for items to be purchased. For special mention: Adrian seems to really care about plants, how they are treated and pruned, what's best for plant/tree health, soil and other many factors that go into being a real gardener in the context of other landscaping factors (hardscape, irrigation, etc.) The work is not yet completed, as it will require several work days. If yesterday's day #1 is a sample of the rest of the work, then I could not be more satisfied. Adrian listened to my description of the overall results I wanted and also to the specific items I wanted in the final result. He advised me on what he thought would not work and why, and, alternatively, on what would be good to do, which parts he could do and which ones would be best for other professionals. I know this process would not work for others, but it's perfect for me, because I am figuring out as I go the redesign of our landscaping. I will add to my review after the project is completed.

I had a complicated irrigation problem that I spent two days trying to resolve. I called George, who quickly identified the problem and fixed it efficiently. He is experienced, skilled, articulate, and his fees are quite reasonable. I would not hesitate to use him agsin, and I would recommend him highly to my friends and family. For all of your landscaping needs, this is your guy!

I couldn't be happier with my experience with Tom and Camarena Landscapes. Every part of the process was professional and pleasurable. My job was very small - create a drip irrigation system in two large raised beds. Notwithstanding, for the estimate Tom arrived precisely at the agreed upon time, explained exactly what needed to be done, and emailed me an estimate that same afternoon. We communicated back and forth via text and phone to discuss a few particulars, and when I asked Tom to include 2 additional deliverables in his original bid price, he gladly agreed. While the other landscapers who had bid said they would do the job alone, Tom brought two of his men and the job went quickly and painlessly. The work was executed flawlessly and with great creativity. For my next landscaping project I would unquestionably work with Tom Camarena again, and I give him my highest recommendation.

I originally reached out to David for tree maintenance and subsequently have hired him for a few garden projects and also bi-weekly regular maintenance. He has helped me with tree removal, digging up my old garden beds, replanting new beds and repairing my sprinkler system. He is knowledgeable and punctual and I would definitely recommend him for anything you need for your yard and garden.

It has been a great experience working with Honest Greens. Our garden was looking down trodden and under nourished from too many years of just mow and blow service. Steve is very knowledgeable and gives careful attention to the specific needs of our individual plants. Our garden has been thriving since we started working with them. Steve has also helped us adjust and regulate our drip system which is making a big difference in the condition and quality of our plants, and ensuring we’re not wasting water. We are very happy to be working with them.

Turfusion transformed my entire backyard into a beautiful zero-scape flowering oasis. They designed and implemented the whole project. They were very professional, Leo and his team performed quality work and they were on time and in budget. I called them for a minor adjustment to the drip system and they took care of it the next day.

Joseph is great. The initial work was completed as discussed, a lot of hand weeding, and the front yard looks wonderful. The cost was reasonable and Joseph's billing system is done via e-mail and online payment, which is fabulous. We are now on an every other week schedule, great work, great guy.

I was looking for repair of my entire backyard and some front yard irrigation system. In addition, I had multiple planters that needed to be replanted with fresh plants. I also needed 2 trees moved to different locations. Finally, I needed to redo the "grout" spaces between concrete pavers in the backyard. Rick was prompt in responding and came to the house quickly for an estimate. He was flexible with his schedule and accommodating. The estimate he provided was transparent, reasonable and within my budget. Work was started very promptly and competed quickly. The end result was very professional and his crew cleaned up nicely after the job. Highly recommended. Overall a very easy, stress-free and pleasant experience.

GIM installed a new cool roof by gaf shingles and a solar system for my home. They helped me to pick out the proper shingle color and even tried to match the panels to look good with the new roof. The solar system was top quality American made panels and it came with system monitoring. All the pipes on my wall were painted to match the home. It was great knowing one company took care of all my needs. Give GIM a try if your looking for home improvement needs! Thanks team!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
