I do not have enough kind words to say about Elsa! She is truly phenomenal in every way -- from her kindness and caring demeanor, to her sincere dedication and commitment to helping me learn Spanish. Right from the start, I knew that Elsa was the right fit: she was, of course, a native Spanish speaker with a wealth of cultural and linguistic knowledge, but more than that, she had clear plans of the best approach to teach me Spanish based on my prior knowledge level (which was very basic). She always gives extra time to her clients, and thus is extremely generous with her time, hosting us in her home and not stopping until we finish the lesson at hand. Unlike my previous schooling experiences learning Spanish, Elsa personalizes each lesson based on our progress and in ways that are conducive to learning Spanish in everyday life. Her experience teaching Spanish truly shows in each lesson. While there are certainly many Spanish instructors to learn from, Elsa has to be one of the best -- I really recommend choosing her in your journey to learn Spanish. Besides being an excellent teacher, she is truly just a wonderful person -- she is caring, genuine, and altogether an extraordinary teacher to learn Spanish from, with a positive and encouraging attitude at an excellent value. I am grateful for her help so far and look forward to many future lessons with her in the future.

Emilio has been a great Spanish tutor during my summer living in LA! He was really flexible about location and time, and working around my work schedule. It's clear that he has experience teaching because he's able to work through the lessons in a comprehensive way while also giving in the moment feedback on pronunciation and grammar. My Spanish has seen significant improvements over the last 8 weeks. Highly recommend!

About

A results driven teacher, I cut through the excess and get down to what matters right away. In regards to Spanish or English, getting you the target vocabulary you need to do your job or to communicate better is number one. Giving you the comprehension and strategy to pass tests, be they common core state standardized, TOEFL, CBEST, Praxis or anything that requires reading comprehension, english literature grammar mechanics, or writing is something we can easily do together. We work hard but we do so playing educational games that get us to our goal. I will show you how to study with flash cards to memorize a ton of information in only a short amount of time. I work well with and have experience teaching from the very youngest of children to Corporate Business Professionals. Children love me. I am educated, experienced, highly recommend and referred. I am looking for clients that have a long term goal and want to meet on a routine basis. This is so I have a set schedule and get my own studies done. (Masters in Education)

About

I am a bilingual tutor with full "native fluency" in speaking, reading and writing Spanish. I am very good at adjusting the level of instruction to the needs and capabilities of individual clients. I have lots of experience helping people learn a second language at a level that does them "practical good", not just enables them to pass tests. The idea is to get you to be able to understand what is being said when the language is spoken, understand the information being conveyed, and reply in the same language if you so choose. I have been very successful in doing this.

About

I have experience teaching in three continents and have traveled to Central and South America and Mexico. I've lived in Europe for six years and studied culinary arts, Spanish humanities and taught ESL in Madrid and Salamanca, Spain. I have training in Lindamood-Bell, functional, notational, proficiency, direct, inductive (immersion, natural and discovery/self-actualization) methods as well as TPR and child/adolescent behavior and humanistic psychology. I am certified in VA (where Common Core really started in the 80s) to teach Spanish K-12. I enjoy writing and am presently enrolled in a course with Troon Harrison and the Children's Literary Institute in CT to write for children and young adults. I have sold photographs to Highlights Magazine related to travel to Hispanic countries and natural science/anthropology. I have taught graduate students at business schools, numerous Big Eight companies, university students and all levels of Spanish and English for K -12. I read, write, speak and understand fluent Castellano as well as South and Central American, Puerto Rican, Cuban and Mexican dialects/accents. My future aspirations include translation, publication/journalism (in either Spanish or English) and bilingual education.

About

Hi, my name is Sasha Leal. I am a native Spanish speaker, born and raised in the business mountain city of Monterrey, Mexico. I have been outstanding in public speaking and creative writing since I was little. I studied at Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon. My poems have been featured in the Architecture faculty's 60th anniversary edition (UANL) and also exhibited at art events, and currently, I still write for pleasure. I have experience teaching ESL, Spanish, and K-12 subjects. (I can provide my resume and references). Something really special about my teaching is that I like to keep every lesson energetic. I like to keep it fast-paced by targeting the interests of the students. Let's say, if you like cooking, I know I will get your attention by talking about ingredients and recipes rather than talking about cars or celebrities. I like to customize my tutoring based on what is needed (age, personality, and number of students is taken into account), so that people grow their passion for Spanish and stay motivated to work hard. Keep in mind: If you have a good sense of humor, expect smiling and laughing while you learn. You will overcome the pain of learning something for the first time and be capable of knocking the fear of failure out of your mind. I am very expressive; I use a lot of gestures and body language in general, helping students connect with the meaning of concepts and Latin culture, instead of depending on word-for-word translations. Students generally feel invited to communicate freely. I love what I do, and I know you will love learning Spanish, too. I can offer the first hour lesson as a courtesy. I would like to know about your study goals and expectations and see if we can work out a schedule, or see if sporadic study support is what you are looking for. I am flexible; I work with all ages, one-on-one, or with groups. I am very excited to know you; let's start working! Descubre que puedes lograrlo, - Sasha Material information: I follow "Ultimate Spanish" by Living Language (beginner to intermediate level) study plan of 40 lessons. I also own a copy of "Easy Spanish" by McGrawHill. I will work with your preferred study plan or your current material.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
