I have a home in Huntington Beach that had an existing furnace and ductwork. I wanted to install AC utilizing the existing system. I consulted with several HVAC contractors and received quotes. Mina was the most knowledgeable of the group of contractors, provided the best suggestions, and also had a very competitive price. During the installation the ductwork turned out to be in poor condition. Mina replaced the ductwork and only charged me the cost of material and not the labor. For anyone who has done contracting this in unheard of. Change orders are often outrageously priced. Mina is an honest man who does good work and cares about satisfaction with the job. If you have the opportunity to use Mina I highly recommend him. The system has been installed and running for 1 month and all continues to work great. Thank you Mina.

We are SO glad we hired Cobalt! David (owner) came out on a Sunday afternoon and he was so professional, thorough and helpful! It was an education working with David, we had no idea what we were doing with our furnace. His prices are very reasonable and he is truly caring about his work and us- I am going to recommend him to all of my friends! Best call we could have made. Thank you David! Our A/C failed to turn on in middle of intense heatwave last week. Jessie at Harbor Electrical was highly recommended by a friend in real estate. After my text message for help, he managed to come by early morning the next day. After his inspection, fortunately, the problem was identified as faulty thermostat that was close to 30 years of age. Eventually, Jessie came by again on Labor day and installed our new smart thermostat which works great with the existing A/C and furnace. After installation, he spent extra time to check and clean the intake vent and the compressor unit to make the A/C run more efficiently. Jessie was highly professional and polite throughout the entire process, and he was very clear and upfront regarding the fees which for me was very reasonable, compared what an underqualified handyman would charge just for coming out. I thank my friend in referring me to Jessie, whom I would also like to highly recommend for all electrical needs around the house or at business.

Hector called to make an appointment for the next day. Hector and Frank showed up very promptly. They installed a Hard Start Kit in our AC and were very thorough. Afterwards they were able to verify the effectiveness of the installation. FTS charged a reasonable price and I would use them again without hesitation.

If you need your AC maintenance or any work done the hardest thing is finding someone you can trust. Don’t be fooled by some technicians on here that will quite you a super low price then charge you extras that increase the cost later. This company gave me a fair price, did quality work and the most important really left an impression of trust. Mo was courteous, punctual and a really nice guy. I highly recommend him. You get what you pay for and when it comes to your HVAC system , do yourself a favor and go for the best.

We just bought a new home and had a completely dirt backyard that we wanted to get landscaped. We hired David right away after meeting with him because he was easy to work with and gave us a great bid that worked with our budget. He also gave us a military discount. We got a mix of concrete and grass in our backyard, which was perfect for our kids so they could play in the backyard and ride their bikes and scooters. We also got an alumawood patio installed that went from end to end of the back of our house. He also gave us a great deal when it came to hooking up our outdoor lighting. We also got a garden wall and sprinklers installed. We are under a pretty strict HOA community because we live in a new housing development and David is well aware of most HOA restrictions. Took him awhile to get us the plans we needed to submit to HOA but we eventually got them and they were approved. Also, a section of our grass in our backyard began to die because the sprinklers were not hitting the area properly and David was willing to replace the sod and add an additional sprinkler. We had a great experience with him and we are definitely going to come back to him when we are ready to hardscape our front yard. Great contractor that is always willing to work with you to make sure you get what you want!

Jason did an excellent job for me. I had been told by another firm that I would have to replace my AC condenser and evaporator, at a high cost, because my R22 condenser was beyond repair. When I came to Thumbtack, Jason posted a constructive solution and estimated a very fair price for the repair of my condenser. He arrived on time and found there was some more repair work to do. He spent a total of four hours working and successfully got my AC working. He insisted that he would only charge me his estimate amount even though I wanted to pay him more He was persistent, polite, and effective, and he saved me a lot of money. He is a great guy and I will be calling him in the future when I need help. Super experience.

There is truly no reason to look any further once you have found Atlas Comfort Air. They are the best in all aspects - price, quality, and response time. Twice they have come out and both times they were excellent. They also did an install for a friend and he had a great experience with them. I only leave reviews when I encounter a person or business that clearly exceeds expectations, and these guys are worth it. Thanks so much for all of your help, and for going above and beyond!

I had an issue with my A/C not generating enough cold air through out my 2,000sq ft home. Joe serviced our condensor & furnace at a reasonable price. I shopped around received some quotes, the quotes I got were higher by $150-$300 more. Joe was professional, explaind what he was going to do & also cleaned up after himself.

Very happy with Mike's work. Due to improper installation of some of my outlets and a broken ground wire this was not a simple problem to diagnose. He solved the mystery and fixed the problem. He had to go get parts in the rainstorm. He was pleasant throughout the whole process. I will be hiring him again. GREAT SERVICE!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
