Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

Reviews for Millbrae private dance lessons

As a piano teacher myself, I feel Nikolai has lots of good things that qualify him as a good teacher. First of all, he received formal dance training since young age, so he is really knowledgeable with his profession. The dances he teaches are the "real Latin version," not the simplified version some dance studios or community centers teach. Students who consistently study with him can definitely reach the level enough to win competitions! I started as a beginner, and had learned many basic steps in rumba, samba, and Cha Cha in the first four introductory lessons. He is able to take student's perspective, be very patient explaining all the details and in various ways to help me understand, and make each lesson valuable and productive without overwhelming me. In addition, as a private teacher, Nikolai would focus on student's learning instead of financial gain. For example, he doesn't charge ridiculously high cost as dance studios do. He doesn't slow down the teaching pace in purpose to push students to take more lessons (which I experienced in a dance studio before switching to him). The workload is totally perfect for student's ability. Also, he allows student to record a video at the end of the lesson so students can practice between the lessons through watching the video. I highly recommend him, especially for serious students!
