Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

We used First Impressions Video for corporate testimonials twice. On both occasions Terry Wall was the videographer. He was extremely professional, arrived early to prepare and was very patient and accommodating to all of the participants he worked with. Most importantly, he produced a great product for our company. We would certainly hire him again.

I placed an ad for a videographer and Fernando responded amazingly quickly! The event was the next day, but he was on time for set up, had professional equipment, captured great footage and put together a highlight real the same day! Additionally, he was reasonable in pricing. I'm very grateful to find someone trustworthy so quickly on here.

Working with Chauncy Smith Photography was INCREDIBLE. His personality, professionalism, work ethic, and talent embodies what the best photographers/videographers should have. Most of all, he pays meticulous attention to detail which I feel like is a "lost art". I am a project manager for a COVID testing company and we needed an instructional video to be made on a very short time notice. I reached out to several professionals and Thumbtack and he was the first to answer. The prices were reasonable but the reason why I decided to work with him was because he was the only one that took an interest in my project by asking relevant questions before he gave me a quote. It really set him apart from other videographers who just threw me a quote without inquiring further about this project. Even though I could have hired someone who had more "experience" up on his portfolio, my gut feeling told me to go with Chauncy Smith Photography and I'm so glad I did! A few days before the shooting was scheduled, he came by to scope out the lighting and props to make sure everything would be okay (TALK ABOUT DEDICATION). On the shooting day, he was responsive, came on time and very friendly. I could tell he truly loved his craft from the way he explained elements of videography and lighting. The lighting in our office where the video was filmed was very difficult to work with but he brought huge bags of equipment and lighting and meticulously set them up. He's definitely a perfectionist as he did not rush the process or gloss over imperfections and inconveniences. He really took the effort to work around every obstacle we had to create a perfect finished product. After filming, a rough draft was ready in only a couple days and he was very responsive to feedback and changes and finished everything in a timely manner. I absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for a videographer/photographer. He provided the value of a director, cinematographer, camera crew, lighting crew and video editor all in one for a fraction of the price of a full production crew. You'd be hard pressed to find a better videographer on Thumbtack.

Fernando videotaped me speaking at a conference in San Diego. He was prompt, easy to work with, and he did a quality job. I made lots of specific requests and he listened and responded to each of my requests. I am impressed with his level of professionalism. The conference promoter was concerned about me bringing in my own videographer, but they were quite pleased with the fact that he has all of his own equipment and it did not interfere with the conference lavaliere. I would highly recommend him. Fast turn around as well.

We're a production company from NYC and we had a business event in SD, and needed a videographer that understands our technical needs as much as our creative needs. Alex was fantastic from the first contact to the achievement of the mission. He's been in charge of many tasks during the gig, not only filming, but also grabbing the much needed b-roll, scouting the right location, etc...He's been really helpful. I'd like to add that, when you spend 5 days working with someone you don't know, you really hope for a decent human being, and Alex is such a class act, a real gentleman. 5 stars. I just hope that we'll get another gig in Southern California soon, to have another opportunity to work with him.

Ryan is very talented and easy to work with. We met with him a few weeks before the wedding to go over what we wanted and then corresponded through email to update him on the schedule for the wedding day. Our ceremony was in the morning and Ryan (together with Sunny) was there early enough to get some good shots during the preparation. Throughout the day, he filmed everything without obstructing anyone. We really appreciated that. We received our 6 minute highlight video in about a week and were very impressed by the first version. We asked for some minor changes and he did it in no time. His work is high quality and very professional. He also has a good eye for details and is great in syncing the video transitions to the music. We would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a videographer who can capture all the moments and put them together in a great video.

My husband and I were on the fence about hiring a videographer. Not that we didn't want one but merely because of cost. It wasn't until two weeks before our wedding did we start to look around for last minute options. I wasn't expecting much considering our wedding had been planned for months. So we took a shot on Thumbtack. Luckily we found Will. He was very responsive as soon as I reached out. We started with a phone conversation about what we were envisioning. During that call my husband and I got a good feeling about Will. Soon after we knew we wanted to work with him and reached back out. Thankfully he was available. The Saturday before the wedding we met with Will to show him our venue. It was great that he got to see the layout of our venue and it was nice to meet him in person. He was very personable. We even chatting for a bit longer about sports. On the day of he was great what can I say. He was at the places he needed to be at the right times and the video he made tells it all. After my husband and I got back from our honeymoon we met with Will to get the video footage and talked about the wedding over a beer. When we saw the video for the first time my husband and I both cried. We literally watched it over and over again. It was exactly what we wanted and he captured our day so beautifully. Will is an artist and did a wonderful job. He is definitely worth it! Thanks Will!
