I retained WIS to conduct a delicate social media investigation. I had an immediate response, a tailored outcome that included a thorough analysis. All the contact I had was directly with the principal, and he was fantastic at explaining the process and alerting me to the realistic outcomes that I could expect to receive. I consequently had realistic expectations - and before I actually paid for anything - about what might be possible. I did not ultiamtely find everything I wanted but it was very clear indeed that WIS went well beyond the extra mile to help me, left no stone unturned in researching the issue and looking for an answer. As an example of going beyond the extra mile, WIS kept on the matter after sending me the report that I had paid for and voluntarily provided me with an update report that did contain additional useful information. Who else would stay on the case like that? I doubt it is industry practice, but it is the way WIS actually did things for me. I found WIS very polite, very responsive, very quick, very thorough and totally objective. I would have no hesitation in recommending WIS, and I personally will not waste a second looking elsewhere if I ever needed work of the sort WIS does to be done for me. It was an excellent experience, and good value for money as well.

I have used Linked Investigations for years. I had an incident with an employee in the past that taught me a valuable lesson. I now screen all potential employees. I provide Mike with basic information like a name, SSN if I have it, and an address or phone number and he can find a surprising amount of information on a person, for example, any criminal past or credit issues. The reports are thorough, timely, and worth it. I recommend him to any employer or anyone needing a background check.

I hired Joseph Recovery for 2 jobs...1 was to help me find a way to collect on a 2 year old judgement and the other was a family issue(possible cheating spouse) I have tried other companies before with no luck. They handled the family issue fast with photos and video. The judgement work was even better, they found the bank and even knew when to have the Writ delivered so I got all my money. Great company, great service, and great price. Very discreet. 100% recommended. Hope I never need them again but if I do, they will be my first call.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

    • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
    • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
    • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
