I was a bit hesitant to use an online service but went with Thumbtack based on their reviews of Mr. Johnson and other customer reviews. From the start Mr. Johnson was very prompt in his response. The initial contact he answered all my questions and provided direction on potential problems. The service appointment was on time. Mr. Johnson was very knowledgeable and provided an excellent service call to meet our needs. I am more than satisfied and will use him in the future for any and all plumbing needs. It was a breath of fresh air to have a company provide outstanding service and have it done by a very nice individual. Thank you Mr. Bruce Johnson!!

After 2 grueling weeks of trying to get our home ready to list for sale it became clear that I would not be able to complete a plumbing task in time and on my own. I turned to Thumbtack and House to Home replied quickly. The job was not large but wasn't a simple fix either. You came after normal work hours to give an estimate because I was under an impossible deadline. You offered to stay and finish not knowing it would end up taking longer than you first thought and require a trip to the hardware store for parts. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your dedication and willingness to go the extra mile for someone who really needed your help. I won't hesitate to call you again in the future, oh... and that shouting you hear coming from the rooftops? It's me singing your praises. Everyone I know will hear about the generous man with loads of integrity who saved the day!

We had a much better than expected experience with Alan Ramirez' Plumbing. Mr. Ramirez made himself available and arrived sooner than expected on a Sunday of a long weekend. Accompanied by a helper, he had all the tools and seamlessly completed repairs, which included unclogging the kitchen drain. He then asked to be walked through the house, to check showers and discovered another water stoppage. This one proved to take longer and yet he stuck to his quote and only charged for one visit. His price was so much less than what was quoted by other services that it only seemed fair to pay him double of what he quoted. Integrity and professionalism do pay off and we can only regret that we had not used Mr. Ramirez before. Now, how do you spell 'relief'?

Mr. Yekta was a very skilled Workman. He fixed the drywall of my ceiling. The plumber left a large hole as a result of fixing a leaking pipe. The repair looks good. He also did a good job cleaning up I plan to use him again.

Originally hired Shiner plumbing. They cancelled the last minute, just like other reviews had posted. So I called Elite plumbing and they were able to send someone else the same day. Will definitely recommend this company. And stay away from Shiner plumbing.

Jesus was very tentative and professional :) A really nice guy too! There was another handyman that first reached out to me on Thumbtack and promised to stop by. But that first guy never showed up and did not respond to any of my emails as if nothing was scheduled or he no longer exists. Jesus was the one who responded right away and even showed up the same day I gave him our warehouse address. Amazing! I definitely do recommend him! He first checked out the pipe drain then later gave us feedback on what was wrong and gave a fair estimate. I thought this process would take a few days but him and his team fixed our clogged pipe within few hours. Not even half a day. Very grateful for his work: fast and good quality. Now I know who to contact for future needs in plumbing, electricity, etc. Thank you Jesus!

I hired Ocho Plumbing to entirely replace a bathroom faucet, drain a shower drain and repair the parts inside a toilet tank. Edgar was very responsive. He arrived on time. He communicated estimates and pricing ahead of doing the work. He was honest and very professional. The work he did was excellent and he cleaned up afterwards. I would highly recommend him!

We called Prudential Plumbing for an annoying issue with a recurring backed-up shower drain. We had two other plumbers look at the problem and they insisted on replacing the main line–under the house and in our front yard as well. High price quotes given by the other plumbers caused us to seek a third opinion from Prudential. Mark from Prudential investigated the problem and assured us it was not the main line. Prudential replaced our “shower drain and common section with laundry drain line” at a fraction of the price quoted by plumbers x and y–we were very glad we did not use them. Our shower has worked nicely ever since–we saved thousands of dollars–Mark was efficient and cordial. Prudential Plumbing has earned nothing less than our recommendation and five stars

I have worked with Nick for over a two decades now. He has done numerous repair jobs and/or remodels for me on my homes as well as worked on a few rental properties I own. Everything from a roof repair, plumbing leaks/new plumbing, tile work, a new fence, Jacuzzi installations to full bathroom & kitchen remodels. He's always shown up on time when he said he'd be here and has completed the projects in the amount of time he estimated. His pricing has always been fair and the quality of work has always been exceptional. He cleans up after himself when he's done and makes sure that you're happy with everything before signing off on the work. He's a great guy to work with and has great sens of humor. With all the bad stuff you hear about construction people and contractors out there, he's a breath of fresh air. I've done everything from full new construction work to minor repairs and he's always the guy I call first. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for someone that they can count on the give you a good deal and get the job done without any headaches. Ken aka Monty

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.
