I had a unpermitted room addition that the city wanted plans and permits for. Alan help me with the city helped me with things I didn't know how to do. he was quick with the plans and then when we resubmitted the plans he was right on time again couldn't have been happier with this service. I'd use them again for any architectural plans I may have in the future

As a GC myself, Fady has been a great architect to work with. He has a commanding knowledge of building codes and regulations which helps keep the builder out of any trouble. He also pays close attention to details when it comes to his drawings. Any questions that do arise throughout the course of a job, his response time is immediate and always looking to help get the job done as efficiently as possible.

I am so happy with Mazi's services (Mana Design) . He completely designed and drafted the new layout and design for my shop. He got the city approval and pull the permit. It is not easy to find someone who you can trust and has experience in commercial interior design. After interviewing with many people, my partner and I, picked MaNa Design because we found Mazi so professional from the day first. Until the final day, he was on top of his schedule and we were in touch via any cominucqtion system such as FaceTime, Skype, etc. and personal meeting during those 10-days. You must see his beautiful showroom, it tells how he cares about every detail. His company is a real example of success and novelty. I am writing this comments to share with everyone our wonderful experience with his design services. We are going to buy all materials that we have chosen from his showroom and we will defiantly use his company - Mana Design Build Inc - to do the construction part. He is licensed and bonded and as far as we did research on his company, he did many beautiful and amazing construction. I hope the above comment helps you all.

We contracted C.Ted Woods as our architect for Solaterre, our rammed earth home. We are all solar powered, off the grid and self-sufficient. Ted not only inspired us with beautifully laid out plans, but helped us maneuver the difficulties of having the County approve this unique home. He guided us through all the stages of the project, and his knowledge was thorough, because of his skills and experiences in the design and construction of sustainable and solar buildings. We would recommend Mr. Woods’ architectural skills highly. His knowledge and skills in sustainable construction united both function and form.

Blair has been great. We are lucky to be able to work with someone so professional and responsive. You will not find such a responsive architect on his level without spending 4-6x the price. Thank you!

After the first meeting and explaining to the architect what I wanted with a simple, yet functional patio cover, he took the concept and presented the plans, ready to have the city's approval. It is very nice to work with people that show skin the game.

To find an architect who has developed a skill set in both exterior and interior design is a blessing. Randy designed a total remodel for our home from top to bottom , inside and out as well as a complete upstairs addition. We absolutely love the design and detail. We get notes on our front door from passers by who want to know who designed certain elements of our home. To be completely honest, there were a few communication hiccups, but they were brought to Randy's attention and he handled it professionally and without being defensive. Our overall experience was just great. I can highly recommend Randy without reservation and you will get every penny's worth of your investment.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
