Preston replace the cover for my split king adjustable sleep number bed, installed an air conditioner in my bedroom on the second floor and put up a porch cover. Done quickly and professionally and at a reasonable cost. I will use his services again for future repairs.

John did such an excellent job on our projects. He replaced an existing porch that was nearly falling down with a beautiful, sturdy deck that we love. He was able to finish the deck in less than a week and kept the work area in a neat and orderly fashion. We’ll get so much use out of our new deck. We also needed our front door relocated. The area we were moving the door to was not square and John was able to custom fit a slab door into the existing doorway. The fit is amazing. It works better than the original front door. We would highly recommend John for any project. He was thorough, fast, neat, fairly priced and did a great job. THANKS JOHN!

Sean is amazing! He's upfront and honest, friendly and motivated. I am a pretty particular person in expectations and Sean meets and exceeds them every time. He is thorough and thoughtful in his work and fair in his pricing. I feel lucky to have found Sean to help me get my new little house just the way I want it- I only hesitate to write this review for fear he becomes even busier! So far Sean has completed tasks requiring expertise in tile (bathroom and front porch), plumbing (toilet and bathroom sink), he's matched a specific baseboard and installed it, he fixed my rusted outlet, and we are in progress of planning a kitchen refacing to include the installation of a range hood fan, dishwasher, new countertops and backsplash, and updating our cabinets. He's easy to talk to and understand- he's quick and reliable. You can tell he takes pride in his work. I don't know how you find better.

This past year I was faced with the challenge of caring for and up-keeping a large property and home. As a single working woman, I found myself needing assistance with a variety of home related fixes and projects. Whether it was essential electrical work, or diagnosing and repairing a large ceiling leak (which three other repairmen previously attempted to and failed at fixing), Brett was always there when I needed him. Brett patched and painted my outdoor porch, spent countless hours grooming the outdoor landscape, and even climbed to the roof to clean the gutters. Brett is the jack of all trades and I can't imagine not having him to call on.

Ron has been doing work around my house since mid 2007. If there's something he can't do, I have yet to discover it. He's on time (or calls if delayed) & is very time-efficient & versatile. I live in a mobile home which is challenging. Ron has done electrical, plumbing, replaced windows & doors, installed blinds, installed ceiling fans, relaid my floor, added an enclosed porch off my back deck. He reconfigured an entry closet to an open, built-in bookcase. He completely gutted my kitchen & gave me great ideas that made it turn out stunning. I can't recommend him high enough. He's fast, yet thorough. You can see the pride in his work & I trust him implicitly.

Scheduled appointment primarily for spiders. Manny was very timely, responsive and reasonably priced. He said the spiders were outside spiders from all the trees and bushes. He sprayed the area where i saw the spiders the most and the porch and patio. Haven't seen any activity since the appointment so it seems to have worked. He also sprayed the bathrooms and kitchen for the silverfish that sometimes pop out. Would recommend his service.

George painted the trim on my 2-story house, all the exterior doors; including the garage trim and washed the vinyl siding on the upper story. Everything was patched an primed - which does not go without saying these days. The workmanship was outstanding in every way; no drips or runs and every part of the contrast, which was against the white, was meticulously detailed. I could not have been more pleased. The lower portion of my house is brick and during an install of a new front door the painters had splattered the brick around the porch with white paint. I was at a loss on what to use to remove the paint as the brick is quite old and fragile; scraping didn't seem like a good idea. George matched the brick color with matte paint and hand covered all the speckles. AMAZING! The front porch makes a lovely presentation with his work and creative problem solving. He was very respectful of the property and left everything cleaner than he found it! The pride he takes in his work shows! I will never use anyone else for projects around my home!

After a phone chat, I sent Mr. Duin an e-mail outlining the projects I had in mind. I asked him to help me select those that fit into my quarterly budgets. Together we selected three that needed attention this winter. 1. stabilize a wobbly 6 foot block (gate) wall that was inches from a gas main, 2. Build a short block wall that would hold back dirt from a muddy embankment, 3. Reinforce a swaying wood fence and wrap metal posts with cedar – box style. Mr. Duin and staff did an outstanding job of listening to my needs. I was impressed with their work, quality of materials, work ethics and attention to detail. They were very pleasant to work with and I look forward to our next round of projects. I hope to include the trim/molding (with up lighting) along the ceiling of my front porch which will have to wait until early Spring – due to budget considerations.

I'm writing to let you know what a wonderful job AML Leon Construction completed on my home. They replaced about 110 linear feet of damaged fascia boards, removed rotten load bearing support wood posts on my front porch and installed 6X6 new posts along with raised concrete footing. They also designed, constructed & installed a decorative grill like metal platform for my AC unit the previous plywood platform was damaged. I thought I would give you an ideal of a few jobs completed. All work was not only done professionally and in a timely fashion, also their prices were very reasonable & all material used of very high quality. I was very pleased & would highly recommend AML Leon Construction. I do plan on using them in the near future. Thank You, Mary Machado

Gabriel from Handyman Tradition has done several jobs for me. From hanging ceiling fans to finishing my screened in porch. The work is always done with the utmost attention to detail. The prices are fair for the quality of work provided. I would not want any other handyman service taking care of my home. I cannot recommend them highly enough! S LaBonnne

David has fixed my swamp cooler & put insulation around the copper tubing from getting over heated in the sun since it sits on the roof of my mobile home. It works great now. David fixed a leak under my kitchen sink that had been leaking for quit some time & was not discovered until the shelf started to warp, it was a rush job because water was everywhere once we discovered it. He also put 4 electrical plugs in our wall which he had to crawl under the mobile home to do so. He will be putting doors on a glass porch soon. There isn't anything that he has done that was bad we appreciate having him nearby & he cleans up whatever mess is made while doing a job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
