Raquel has changed our lives!!! She came out to work with our German Shepherd, who we found out was highly prey-driven, and quite a bit neurotic. She helped us understand her behaviors, and what we could do to redirect her. She spent two and a half hours with us, and it was money well spent! We didn't want to post our review right away, to make sure the training stuck. I have to say, we, and our dog, have retained what we learned in one session with Raquel, and the change has been dramatic. Walks are extremely enjoyable now, not a tug-of-war, like they used to be. Our dog knows her limits, and we really only correct her occasionally now. We are forever grateful for the knowledge and expertise that Raquel imparted to us and our dog. We highly recommend her services to anyone in need of a GREAT trainer!

We called Dee Cee because our daughter's new 3 month old Gampr puppy and our 5 year old Australian Shepherd could NOT get along. It was causing an incredible amount of tension in our home and the dogs were both extremely stressed. Our Aussie and the puppy could not be in the same room at the same time and if they were there was a fight. I wish I could say all of the fights have stopped, we remain a work in progress. But after just one visit our doggies are friendly. They share toys, space and this morning they even shared a doggie bed! THIS would not have happened last week.. Thank you!! DeeCee for your help and expertise. Everyone is AMAZED.

Duane was outstanding. He really knows his trade. I needed help with a very anxious and aggressive German Shepherd. With in one session he had My dog corrected and he was the sweetest dog ever met. By session 2 and three he dog was playing in the dog park with other dogs and socializing. By session 4 I was able to take them to the restaurant where dog owners were allowed to bring their pets ...and I was so proud of as he was best behaved dog there. I was in fact even complimented on how well behaved my dog was. This would not of been possible without a great trainer. I was a little reluctant initially because his rate seemed a bit higher than his counterparts. But then again you get what you pay for. When you break it down on the hourly perspective he's not that much more expensive. I got a "Bentley" as opposed to a "Toyota Tercel"...thanks Duane you're awesome and not a hyped up television dog trainer...Its the real deal.

I first met Robert back in 1994, when he was living here in Lancaster, CA. At the time, I owned a pair of dogs - Sheba, a Bavarian Shepherd, and Princess, a Lab/Chow mix. As a loyal fan of the "Lassie" movies and TV series', I was well aware of the Weatherwax Family's "pedigree" (pardon the pun) with regard to dog training. So when Robert offered his assistance with the training of my animals, I jumped at the opportunity! The thing I remember most, is a statement he made before any training began. Robert told me that he would train ME to train my dogs, believing it was best for them to learn commands from me, their owner, not some stranger. His training methods were clever, patient, humane and well-thought-out, and worked like a charm. Soon, both dogs were well-behaved and obedient, following commands based on hand-signals only (a common practice with TV and movie animals)! While both dogs benefitted tremendously, Princess truly excelled, at one time able to follow nearly 20 different commands! All on hand-signals! Sadly, both dogs are long-gone to Doggy Heaven, but I've never forgotten them or the training methods I learned from Robert. I cannot offer a higher recommendation.

Daniel really knows his stuff. We now have 2 happy and friendly German shepherds. All the advice we received on introducing a new dog to our family worked. After 3 hrs of training session and about 7 days of follow the steps/advise….from walking w/muzzles, walking 20 feet apart, and finally walking side by side with no aggression, Max (new dog) and Foxy accepted each other. We are very happy with the success we had and we highly recom’d Daniel to work with your dogs.

Christina and I would like to thank you for the wonderful job you and your associates did with our 1 year old German Shepherd Dog "Jack". When we brought him to you , he had a strong, independent spirit and we had difficulty getting him to know what we expected of him. We choose to board him with you rather than commit to several weekly lessons. We were pleased with our decision. You delivered a well- behaved, disciplined dog, who's spirt had not been broken yet with a heart for obedience. Your "Fun, Fair, and Firm" system was easy to learn. Jack is now a joy to have in our home, as protector and companion. If anyone should wish for names and /or numbers for a reference , please do not hesitate to give them our name and number.

I would highly recommend K.O. Dog Training. The trainers, Philip and Michelle were great to work with. They were prompt to each session and made themselves available in between in case I had questions or concerns. They were very patient with me as a new puppy owner and great with my dog, Teddy. Our sessions are over and they made it clear that they are an available resource to me for the life of my dog. I am very pleased with the progress that Teddy (and I) have made.

My friend recommended Tommy to me when i got my German Shepard puppy. it was his best idea ever! Tommy was so kind and gentle eith the 4 And 2 legged members if his class. He asked about what food we were feeding, what our breeds were made for,etc and then began training the Owners rather than the dogs. After 6 weeks we saw improvement in bith the owners and dogs and after performing thr basic commands and a trick, we all received diplomas! I loved the place so much that i let Simon go to doggie day care to socialize with dogs of all sizes and breeds. 2 years later i got another shepard, Lancaster, and Tommy’s training helped me so much having 2 large boys but they are so sociable and friendly and i love them to death and they love their Mommy. Thanks ro Tommy’ classes we have a happy househokd !!

If I could leave more stars, I would. Daryl worked with our German Shepherd Lexi who was a rescue with severe fear and aggression issues. Daryl worked with Lexi and our family so we could provide the best environment for Lexi. We were able to enjoy our pet and Lexi became more confident and less stressed. We continued our training and are in contact with Daryl. Daryl is honest with his assessment and will not sugar coat anything. Lexi was never afraid of Daryl and I could see the bond and respect they had for each other. Whether basic training, fear or aggression issues or whatever you need, Daryl and his crew at America's Best Dog Trainers will be there to help because they genuinely care for your animal and its wellbeing. Thank you for helping our family. Please don't hesitate to call him.

Amazing! David was amazing with my dog. I had a dog who had several issues on top of not having any obedience. We tried other trainers before him and they couldn't help him. We finally found David and he did a wonderful job. He got our dog to stop lunging, barking, tearing up our things, helped us build a bond, and taught him obedience commands. I am very grateful for everything he's done.

Daniele not only helped improve the overall health of my Golden Retriever but she also provided me with the tools & knowledge to handle her anxiety issues. Now Jasmin is a very healthy & sassy 13 yo!! Daniele also helped create an even stronger family bond with my 3 1/2 yo German Shepherd mix by addressing some of his behavioral issues. Daniele has always made herself available in emergency situations and never hesitates to go the extra mile. She is a true animal lover and we are very thankful to have her in our lives.

Before Karin, I had a dog and human aggressive German Shepherd Husky mix. Layla would react to every single dog that we saw when we were on walks which made it very difficult to walk her. As for people, when someone got to close she'd snap and lunge at them. We did a 3 week board and train program with Karin and was probably the best decision I made. We had gone through a couple of trainers and finally found the right one. Layla now walks and ignores any dog we pass and people can come up to us and talk without her reacting. Not only does Karin help you with your dog but she also explains what you, as the handler, need to work on. Even after the board and train, advance group class is available to continue working with your dog around a controlled environment. Needless to say, we're happy we found her. Definitely a well knowledge and amazing trainer.

Kate has been working with me and my over reactive German Shepherd Max. She has dramatically improved a behavioral issue with other dogs which at times I felt was hopeless. She has accomished huge results in a short period of time with kindness and patience. Her knowledge of dog behavior is very impressive and she is a pleasure to work with. Max loves her! She is a true professional and really cares about you and your dog. I have no doubt Max would not have made the progress he has if it weren't for Kate!

We had a great experience with Dianne Lawrence when she gave our puppy (mixed german shepherd/lab) obedience training including walking on a leash and most important, teaching the dog how to behave around people and other dogs. Her style is gentle, but firm, and commands respect from the dog without being harsh. She also focuses on the human relationship with the dog and makes you understand your role in the dog's behavior. Dianne's focus is not to personally train the dog, but to teach you as a dog owner to train the dog. Along with the general obedience training, Dianne also taught us how to train our dog to sit, lie down, come, and stay. We have nothing but positive things to say about Dianne and recommend her wholeheartedly as a fantastic dog trainer. Our dog loved Dianne, and was eagerly wagging his tail every time he saw her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
