Pete is an outstanding dog trainer. We only needed one lesson and he showed me what I need to do to get my dog to walk without pulling, stay in her bed for an extended period of time and to calm down when people come over. He showed me and left it up to me to practice the exercises with her. She has really improved and now the walks are enjoyable for both of us. I highly recommend Pete and his services. He even read my 2 year old grandaughter a book when we were done!

Logan comes to my house which is very helpful. My dog responds well to Logan and really likes him. The lesson is an hour and then I work with my dog for the week until Logan comes for our next lesson. I'm so happy that I found Logan he has this connection with my dog and I call Logan the Dog Whisperer that's how good he is with my dog. I feel Logan really has a love for animals and it shows.

My Newfypoo pup Jelly Bean is a handful, especially considering I have never had a dog before. I was fortunate enough to stumble on John Vinton's site, after being dropouts from Sirius group puppy training. His technique is unique as he does not advocate stuffing the dog with never ending treats. Instead, consistent reinforcement of commands accompanied with appropriate overwhelming praise when deserved. We're only 3 lessons in. I am so proud of my Bean, especially when compared to other dogs we meet on our walks. We both still have a lot to learn and with the help of "A Better Dog Trainer" I know we'll be successful.

Erika is absolutely amazing with my senior golden retriever. Hope loves Erika because she is loving, cautious and very observant of my dog's needs. I am very picky about who I allow to walk my dog due to her health concerns. Erika takes her time and makes sure that all of Hope's needs are taking care of including change of water, and cleaning up any of Hope's "you know what" on our patio. I cannot recommend this young lady enough. Her gracious and calm personality make her highly valuable. She is absolutely dependable and listens to all of the directives I gave her about Hope. Hire her, and do not let her get away, you will not be sorry.

Emily is one of the most passionate and knowledgeable dog trainers I have ever met. I contracted her when I adopted a rescue with severe separation anxiety and who never had any formal training. Within 6 weeks my pup mastered basic commands, and we were well on our way to overcoming his separation anxiety. I would recommend Emily without hesitation to anyone looking for expert help!

Emily was amazing with Winston! I couldn't have asked for a better trainer for my puppy! In the 4 weeks of training he became a much more obedient and well mannered little pup. I am more than confident to recommend Emily and her training camp to whom ever needs an efficient and responsible trainer.

Barry loves dogs even more than vintage cars. He has driven his two dogs to the dog park every day for years. He knows a lot about dog health and psychology of the individual dog and when in a pack. He helps people choose dogs that have a wonderful disposition. It's always a joy to visit the Triple B Pet Ranch and to see what pet visitors he has.

Mary is amazing! My three pups love her! One is a nervous big baby around people and extremely hard to win over but she has the magic with him. And it took her a very short time. Dogs are the best judge of character. Even if I am home they wait by the door when it's time for her to come. She is an important part of their day. We are very lucky to have her in our lives. She is extremely loving, caring, dependable, super friendly and goes the extra mile. I totally trust and appreciate Mary. I really don't know what I'd do without her.

Simply put Koru K9 is awesome. I've made 3 behavior change sessions in the course of 1.5 months and puppy is way way better. She used to be a very nervous dog, afraid of everything and anything. Now she is calm, relaxed, walk beautifully by our side, doesn't bark to other dogs walking around. She still has lots to learn and training is an ongoing process, Koru K9 will teach you how to make your dog a better dog, they are great!

Sue has been working with me and my two min pins, Coco and Tootsie on behavior modification issues. I was at the point of contacting the breeder to give one of them back - basically at the end of my rope. I'd worked with other dog. trainers, but Sue explained and showed how to manage and modify behavior that was easy to comprehend and made sense. I am not exaggerating when I say she has literally changed my life and helped me rethink how to interact with my girls. I am very grateful.

Brandon is wonderful!! I hired him to walk my Pit/Bulldog mix. He is responsible, respectful and loves dogs! He has been so great with my little Ruby even doing some training as part of her walks. I highly reccomend him and hope one day my little girl will behave enough to join his group walks.

I've used Nicole as a pet sitter for both my dogs on more than one occasion. She's always been friendly and quick to respond to scheduling requests; she's been where she says she's going to be when she says she's going to be there, and provides good value for the money. I have no reservations about recommending her, and plan to use her again when I travel.

Sherry was very loving to our dog, kind but in control of his behavior, and gave me good tips on how to retrain him in a positive way. I was already doing some of the recommended ideas , but she helped me refine them. Gwen and Wylie the terrier.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
