It’s so nice to have things done while I can work on my own things. Angela did a great job grooming my dog. She was great at handling her while she wasn’t the most friendly dog. Thank you!

Our dog was skunked and I was desperately looking for someone to come to our house to wash her. I was so happy to have our groomer that we have gone to for 3 generations of dogs answer my add! She is wonderful and does beautiful dog cuts. She answered very quickly and offered to pick up the dog, take her to the dog park so she was calm enough to be groomed (she's a pup still) and take her to the shop. All for a very reasonable price. So happy!

Gail has been walking our dog Val for about 6-7 months now and she is fantastic! I can't say enough about Gail's attentiveness, reliability, and great communication. We have had previous dog walkers an Gail is by far the best. She frequently sends pictures or videos of the day's walk, which is really thoughtful. She is also very flexible and works with us and our schedule. We originally had Gail come a few days a week, but we are so happy she now comes Monday through Friday. It's clear she really cares about the dogs she works with and wants to make sure they're happy. If you're looking for a reliable, trustworthy, and thoughtful dog walker, contact Gail!

I am an owner of an extremely protective 160 pound St. Bernard. She has extreme issues with social interactions with people if they are not family. I was so fortunate to find Coune's Canines. Stacy was extremely brave on that first visit. My dog lunges at her many times and barked non stop. She came back! And we tried her entering the house with my dog in her cage. This went on for many weeks but finally a breakthrough my dog allowed her to pet her through the cage. Now Stacy is easily her good friend! She can walk her around the property play inside with her and when I tell my dog she is coming to visit she is very excited. I never thought I would find anyone that would work with my temperamental girl. But I would highly recommend Coyne's Canines. They care about your pet and treat them like their own.

I had KeChaunte Johnson watch my two bichon frise dogs for a weekend. The oldest is calm but the youngest puppy can be rowdy. She was able to handle all the responsibilities I gave her. I definitely recommend her!

About

We offer Pet boarding, daycare and grooming services. At Four Paws Pet Ranch, we know that your pets are family members. They capture our hearts, share our homes and in many cases are given the same status as our children. That's why choosing the right care for them is important. Loving owners know that dogs, even the smaller breeds, require a fair amount of exercise and stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Canines by nature are very social creatures, and they crave companionship. We understand you can't be with your friends all day, everyday, but you can help your loved one to be more content during the times that you are away with help from our dedicated team. Our service is designed to make all the difference in the world to the little one who's blue without you.

About

Nob Hill Dog Walker caters to one dog at a time. I am a long-term resident of Nob Hill who is mature, responsible, and of course a dog lover and available to walk your dog, one at a time. I am available for one- to two-hour walks on my usual daily walking routes. These include the quieter residential streets of Nob and Telegraph Hills, North Beach, Pacific Heights, Presidio Heights and Russian Hill. This is perfect for a dog that needs exercise and likes climbing hills and moving. For a small or older dog, arrangements can be made. Dogs must be well-behaved, leash trained, and not in need of being around other dogs. No pit bulls (though I love them dearly) or dogs with snapping problems. I'm sorry. If your dog exhibits stellar behavior on the leash, trips to the Presidio or Land's End by car are possible for no extra charge. To introduce your dog, let's meet at Huntington Park on Nob Hill and go for a test walk together to see how your pooch does. If everything checks out, you can simply call me the next time your dog needs walking. I'll pick him or her up in front of your building and return him or her at the designated time. Daily, weekly or intermittent times are available. Weekends are included. I charge $20 per hour. I am insured through Pet Sitters Associates.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.

How much does it cost to groom a dog?

Dog grooming costs depend on the service your pet requires. Nationally, the average price for dog grooming ranges from $40 to $100, varying by location. Not surprisingly, dog grooming on New York’s Upper East Side costs nearly double what it costs in a small town in Montana. Dog groomers typically handle every aspect of your dog’s beauty and hygiene, from tooth brushing to hairstyling. One potential way to save is to have your dog groomed at your doggy daycare — sometimes they offer discounts on dog grooming prices for clients. Here are some examples of average dog grooming costs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Please note these prices would include transportation fees for picking up and dropping off your dog to your home:

  • Nails: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Toothbrushing: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Tooth scraping (removal of plaque from teeth to prevent infection), with anesthesia: $600
  • Tooth scraping, without anesthesia: $400.
  • Wash and dry: $60
  • Ears: $30 a la carte or $20 when bundled with another service
  • Grooming package: $130 — includes wash, nails, teeth, ears, gland expression and haircut
