Introduction: Hello and thanks for reading this! I'm currently booked out until early May of 2020. If this timing works for you I'd be happy to hear about your project! When I started my business and began using Thumbtack in 2015, I was operating as a Handyman. In late 2015 I decided to take a position as a full time Project Foreman for Friedman Brueggemeyer (a design/build in Berkeley) for several years to gain more experience running large projects. Now I'm back on Thumbtack, and am a general contractor, ready to build my business. I have extensive hands on experience in all of the core building trades. Therefore, I'm well versed in all areas of residential construction. I have high attention to detail, and this comes through in all phases of my projects, from the planning/set up phase all the way through to the finish phase. I run a very clean job site. I am meticulous about keeping tools and materials organized, walkways clear, and do daily clean up. I utilize high end dust extraction systems for interior projects, and for exterior projects as needed. I listen very carefully to a clients needs, wants, concerns and questions. I strongly believe that no two jobs are alike, and that it is critical to understand where people are coming from in order to provide them with the best possible service, and end product. I'm a firm believer that construction is as much about the process as it is the end product.

We have lived in our home without a toilet on our first floor for over 20 years! No More. I now have a wonderful half bath. Alex worked with our architect’s design to build a half bath, by breaking through my living room wall into my attached garage, and building a newly imagined space there. Because we were creating an alcove to access this new space, I got the bonus of a new closet. Who doesn’t want more closet space! Alex is a true craftsman, and enjoys his work. When unexpected issues arose, he showed his problem solving skills, suggesting and executing work arounds. He has an abundance of experience which enable him to suggest the best fix. He works with top notch subcontractors, and managed their timing and execution well. I was very please with the detail of his initial bid, because it meant he was really thinking through every step that was needed. This project was no small feet, we had to get water were there wasn’t any before, and get connected into the sewer line under my slate walkway. Things I would never think of, as I just wanted to pick out my pretty Heath Tile pattern, and fixtures. We talked through many things that were not specified in the drawings. For example, Alex made sure the addition used the same baseboard and door trim, so it looks like it was always part of my house. We had to figure out the best transition to the garage, as it turned out to be a different elevation. So we decided to tile the alcove too. Little details like that make a big difference in the finish product. Because of his initial detailed bid, there were very few add services, and the project finished very near to original budget. We had a structural issue with the placement of the alcove opening, but he was able to solve for that, and at a reasonable price. His billing was very clear, the progress payments tied to specific line items, which I really appreciated. Pictures are worth a thousand words. I love my new half bath and closet. Wish we had done it sooner. Thank you Alex!

Beyond Green was selected for a complete rebuild of our basement in ADU. Project started from concrete floors and was managed through to the final details. Alex does great work! He is very meticulous and responsive. As with any project this large, there were a few changes along the way. Pricing and communication around all of the changes was more than fair. I would highly recommend Alex for another project, large or small.

General Contracting

I highly recommended working with Alex—his work exceeded my expectations. We wanted a staircase built to a small storage loft above our kitchen, and to have the loft space extended. He listened to us describe the addition we wanted and what materials and aesthetics we were going for, and turned that into a perfect design. He was collaborative and open to our choices and suggestions, and had excellent taste in all of the suggestions and choices he made as well. The finished product is better than I even hoped it would be—his execution and craftsmanship are incredibly impressive. I’d hire him again in a heartbeat—in fact, we hope to work with him again in the near future!

Dishwasher Installation

Alex is a breath of fresh air to hire! He took the time to ask questions to get a true sense of the project, making sure he gave us a fair and accurate quote. He was thorough on the job, making sure the work matched his word. And finished on time, just as he said. Very refreshing!

General Carpentry

I hired Alex from Beyond Green to bring a couple of door frames up and frame in a pantry. Well, that went so well, we redid the entire kitchen! They installed lower cabinets and laid the plywood sub-counter to accept the pre-ordered quartz countertop. Tiled the entire wall backsplash, created floating shelves, installed new appliances and built a custom sliding door for the pantry. It came out awesome so good it was featured on CurbedSF. He was on time everyday and was thoughtful in his approach to working in an old building. I would definitely hire Beyond Green again, probably tomorrow! Update: We sold our condo and moved to Oakland, where Alex and his crew have been a fixture at our new house. We hired him again to complete a whole slew of random contracts and had them rebuild our 800sq.ft. deck. The old deck was under built and rotted out. Alex came in and built a bomb proof, 50 year deck complete with Ipe decking and was again, on time and at budget. We already have him looking at our other deck as well as finishing our basement, next year. Some things change, but Beyond Green has stayed the same with their honest policies and on time completions! Thanks Alex!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My pricing structure is typically a fixed bid price, although on smaller jobs an hourly structure can be preferable for some clients. Generally, my rates are lower than comparable contractors. Most truly comparable contractors offering high end construction, are more established in the Bay Area, and are charging record high rates (it's currently June, 2019). Being a newer, less established contractor my pricing strategy is undercutting these contractors in price, while doing comparable level work and providing a comparable (or better) overall experience for the client.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

The process starts with listening and understanding what the client wants, answering all questions and making suggestions as I see fit. Every project is different so from here it can go a few directions. Often the project will go back into (or finish up) the design phase. Other times, the project may be able to start right away. Either way the next step is I'll provide a detailed estimate for my the client. This lays out exactly what I'll do, and what I'll charge. From there all questions and concerns can get worked through. If the client would like to move forward then I'll draft the contract. This lays out a payment schedule, and typical construction contract terms. Then, once signed the project starts!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

    - Almost 20 years on construction sites - 4 excellent mentors over the years, passing on easily 100 years of combined experience. - Countless hours of self education: reading books/publications, observing other contractors methods/practices, product research, studying building/plumbing/electrical codes, - EPA Certified Lead Renovator
