I couldn't be more thrilled with the professionalism and service provided by everyone at Home Team Services. We were most in need of a dryer flue cleaning, and since this is no longer offered as a stand-alone service, I opted to include the 10 vent cleaning as well, especially since we just moved into this new home and were unsure if they had ever been cleaned. I was under a time crunch, as our new washer and dryer had already been ordered, so I was immensely relieved when Israel was able to fit me in on an already busy day later that week. It turned out that it was even busier than expected and they called several times with updates on their ETA and even offered to reschedule so they weren't intruding on our evening, which I turned down. By the time they arrived, we had settled on the stand-alone dryer flue cleaning, as it was our most pressing need. From arrival to departure, the team was an absolute delight! They showed me pictures of the flue before and after, and communicated each phase as they went along. The flue was an absolute mess and it clearly hadn't been cleaned for about ten years! In the end, they insisted that we not pay since they were so late, which was so respectful of my time, and I'm eager to get them back out here soon to get to work on the vents!

I just want to take the time to sing praises for Healthy Duct Cleaning and their tech SAM. I called for service after searching thumbtack for a duct &dryer vent cleaning vendor for my Apartment Community. The vents had not been cleaned for over 10 years and were causing other issues in my property. When I called Healthy Duct Cleaning for an estimate they were great. Professional, on-time, responsive, and knowledgeable. They came and cleaned the whole dryer vent& ducts system out for me and did a wonderful job. They were very responsive and came and looked at the system, helped me locate and seal the leak. I have been in the property management industry for almost 10 years, and worked with many vendors. I can honestly say I would recommend this company for service to anyone. I had a great experience with them and hope others will as well.

I needed a new door knob and deadbolt installed and a bathroom vent fan replaced. Nick answered my call on a Saturday and scheduled for 9:00 on Tuesday. Between texts, I was able to go and get the door knob and fan. Nick showed up promptly at 9:00 and after seeing the jobs, went to work. He was quiet, courteous, knowledgable, honest...what more can I say? I now have a working door knob and a great bathroom fan. He was reasonably priced and I've found my handyman. I won't have anyone but Nick for my projects from now on. The only problem? He's so good that I might end up thinking of more home projects!!!

JR and his team were FANTASTIC! We had a fully occluded dryer vent that we thought just needed cleaning - as it turns out, it had been poorly installed and completely busted! JR found a great solution to re-route the vent, and it looks great! We also had his team add in a heating system vent cleaning-- they were so thorough with our very dirty ducts!! Work was done with high quality and for a great price! Highly recommend this company!!

Denny is a consummate professional. What he quotes/proposes is exactly what you get. His work is top quality and he communicates well. I just got a vent fan installed in the kitchen where the duct had to be run to the outside. I also got another heating/cooling vent installed in the bedroom. He did both jobs perfectly and left the house just as clean as it was. He does all this at a great price. Highly recommend Denny

Call Shawn's cell or his office, but he is never in his office. He is out in the field. He is easy and polite to speak with, and you will not be sorry you called him. Please say you saw him in Thumbtack. Thanks. Note: The best way to make contact with Shawn and to answer your questions or learn more information is to call him. If you send an e-mail, his father will receive it and Shawn will not. The father has a computer and puts Shawn's ads on as a favor for Shawn. Shawn has no personal e-mail and does not have a computer. His father cannot answer any questions concerning jobs that you may have questions about. So please call Shawn on his cellphone. It is more businesslike to speak on the phone, as he will need to ask you questions concerning any jobs you have need of for him to give you an honest estimate for. Email is just not good for this, as there are too many unknowns which Shawn needs to ask you about, and e-mails take too long. That is why Mr. Bell invented the telephone. If Shawn is in the middle of a job, he may not answer his cell, but you are invited to leave a clear message for him to return your call. Always give him your day number and your evening number, so he can reach you when he has free time. We offer professional fireplace chimney cleaning, dryer vent cleaning (over 20 years), also fence repairs and building repairs, painting, window repairs, screen door repairs, wood work repairs, and many other odd jobs and repairs to your home, garage, fences, house, yard and many other small odd things that need a personal repair attitude. We clean the entire vent from the dryer to the extreme outlet. He is not lazy about this. Dryer vents are cleaned for single houses and apartment complexes, condos, laundry mats, anywhere where there is a clothes dryer. We clean or repair/replace vents if needed. We're not afraid to go on the roof or under the house. We do the job like it's our own house - correctly. Expert work is finished in a logical manner. Expert chimney cleaning is done with no rushing. We clean the entire chimney system, including 1. top spark arrestor, 2. flu/chimney, 3. the smoke chamber located above the damper plate, 4. the damper plate, 5. fire box. Free inspection on the written report is done with cleaning. We have over 20 years of experience in Santa Clara Valley. We are not a fly-by-night, winter-only chimney scam. We're here all year long, and we do the job correctly. Be cautious of many chimney cleaning people, as they do not take the time to clean the entire chimney system correctly. If they take less than 1 hour, beware. Always ask how long they take before you hire them; if it is less than 1 hour, then beware of shoddy work. It should take approximately 1 1/2 to 2 hours to do the cleaning correctly. All 5 sections should be cleaned, not just the chimney top and the fire box below. We also clean the smoke shelf, the smoke chamber and the spark arrestor. All of this takes time and arm-and-hand effort. We do gutter cleaning and repairs, and trim trees away from your house and gutter if needed. We clean houses or yard-apartment complexes/rental sites. We are happy to work with real estate managers and property owners. If Shawn is in the middle of a job, he may not answer his cell, but you are invited to leave a clear message for him to return your call. Always give him your day number and your evening number, so he can reach you when he has free time. We have a few used wood stoves for sale to possibly fit your fireplace or free-standing stoves also. We offer fair pricing and quality-personal work. We are reliable. References are given. You won't be sorry for using Shawn. Everyone loves his attitude and work. Because of past experiences, the following are written for your education. Note: There is no such thing as a license for chimney sweeps issued in CA. Neither the state nor the county or the city have license requirements specifically for chimney sweeping. There is no such thing, honestly. Contact the city you live in and learn the truth. We do have a city business license as is required. If any chimney sweep claims to have a license other than a business license, then you need to investigate what type and where the license they have is issued. Most likely, it will be a contractor's license, which has nothing to do with cleaning chimneys, unless they are rebuilding the chimney. These people are contractors who most likely could not make a living building houses. There is no such legal license issued for chimney sweeping in California. The best method to learn if the chimney sweep you are contacting might be doing a good job is to learn how long they will take to clean your fireplace system. We personally have never been able to clean a chimney system in less time than 75 minutes and usually it takes 90 minutes. When you call around, tell them you do not have much time to spare when they arrive and you need it done as quickly as possible; ask them how fast can they clean your chimney system. Then they'll tell you what they really do. Just remember, with all the scrubbing and scraping, it takes time to clean a system correctly. It usually takes at least 90 minutes as a rule. This is a "word to the wise". Do not assume anything, ask lots of questions like how long it takes; have them name all the parts they clean. They should say 1) chimney flue, 2) spark arrestor, 3) smoke shelf above the damper plate, 4) the damper plate both top and bottom, 5) the fire box and throat. They should hand scrub everything with a smoke shelf brush at the bottom and a flue brush on a pole for the chimney flue. They should clean the spark arrestor so it breaths properly. Do they do a visual inspection for cracks? Do they give you a written inspection report on paper? Do they use a vacuum to keep the room dust free? Do they protect the floors? Do they offer a smoke test to confirm any cracks they point out as a danger to see if they really are dangerous? A smoke test takes about an hour to perform, and it can prove if any cracks seen or unseen are dangerous or not. Don't let them sell you any fixes to cracks unless they perform a smoke test first.

Do you have any idea how dangerous your dryer vent can be? Oh don't worry, we're not talking about the one you pull out after each dryer load and swipe the lint out of. You handily throw away a very small percentage of the actual lint pulled from that dryer load. So, where did the other 75% go? The majority of the lint that is pulled from your clothing, blankets, towels, etc. is deposited in that shiny silver pipe known as the dryer vent or duct work. In some houses, it may be just a couple of feet, while in others, we have seen hoses as long as 30 feet or more. It's actually quite scary when you learn about just how dangerous this can be.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

  • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
    • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
    • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
    • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
  • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
  • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
