Albert and his team were flawless. We use various videographers all over the U.S. and this was the best experience I've ever had. His staff was on time, professional, knowledgeable, and truly cared about the product they produced.

I was looking for an affordable, no frills, family photographer-- I received 10 bids thru thumbtack, and Lawrence's bid was LESS than 1/3 the cost of the others-- PLUS he gave us the DVD with all the prints (most photographers will only allow you to order prints thru them). He scouted out a location, met us the day after Christmas, and had our photos ready on DVD the very next day. I highly recommend him for anyone looking for high quality, basic family photos.

Mark did an excellent job. He communicated very well and clear already from start what kind of gear he had and what he was able to do, and even visited the venue before the event to make sure that everything would run smoothly. At the event, he filmed with three cameras and two led lights by stage, and delivered the videos in a hard drive to our office. Mark is very professional, service minded and an excellent videographer. I strongly recommend Mark.

A First Class Videographer for a First Class Event: The Aspire Co put on a 5 day event for the Prime Minister of Malaysia and Sean Kurtela was there to capture the moments from start to finish. He did an amazing job. He was punctual, adaptable, professional, and easy to work, all at a fair rate. Sean followed all of our directions and delivered a great disc that upheld our client's expectations. We will definitely be using Sean for future events!

Jim is a great videographer!!! After speaking with several videographer, Jim was the ONLY one I liked, besides the fact that his portfolio is exquisite. His professionalism is unlike any other. Jim was prompt with his responses and easy to work with. Although we have not seen our videos yet, I am sure they will be amazing. Jim was patient and understanding when we started to run behind on time during our function. He assured me that everything would work itself out and it did. Jim constantly checked in with me throughout the day to make sure he captured the right moments for our videos. He clearly is very good at his job. Prior to our function, I recommend Jim to a family member who also hired him. There event took place several weeks before our, so I had a chance to see Jim in action. Jim did not disappoint. My family member was very satisfied with Jim's work. I spoke to Jim during this event and even then he gave me several pointers in order to make sure my event went smooth. I can't recommend him enough! Thanks Jim. Frank R.

Nick has been our primary freelance videographer for more than two years. We appreciate Nick's artistry and his eye for catching authentic educational experiences and engaging interactions between students and teachers. He's fascinated with lighting and it's effects, and brings this creatively into his creations. His work is very polished and he pays attention to the little details in shooting and editing his video work. He's been responsive to our feedback as needed, and we recommend Nick.

One of the best things you can find in a videographer is a passion for his or her work and it is clear that Elliott has just that. It was obvious to me after looking through his work and chatting on the phone, that he is the type of person who takes pride in the product he provides, which gave me the confidence I needed to entrust him with our needs. The mark of a true professional and talent is also somebody who can problem solve and overcome obstacles. On the day of our scheduled shoot we ran into some technical issues that nobody could plan for, but Elliott was able to work through those bumps in the road and provide us with a great looking product. If you want to work with somebody who gets the job done (no matter what) and does it well and to the highest quality - Elliott is your guy.

Ian was fantastic to work with. He was professional and responsive. We needed to conduct a media training for our client in SF. He was prepared and arrived promptly. Also, he made sure to bring extras of everything in case we need it. I would definitely use Ian again when we need a professional videographer in the SF area.

Our experience with Nathaniel far exceeded our expectations. My wife and I hosted a family gathering at our home to reveal the sex of our new baby. He was taking pictures and videos the entire time. As with many photographers/videographers you never know what you're really going to get. Nathaniel was non-intrusive and blended in at the party which was refreshing. Now for the final product. Much to our surprise the very next day we had our video from him. It brought tears to both of our eyes. We cannot wait to share it with our family and most importantly our son. The video captured all the great moments at our party from the food, the drinks, the laughs and the people. My wife and I strongly recommend his services. Not only is he great at what he does, but he is a personable down to earth type of guy. Thanks Nathaniel.

Gary Magill is a great videographer at a reasonable price. I had a lot going on the weeks prior to the wedding and the morning of the wedding so unfortunately I did not have much time to talk to Gary, however, I was lucky enough that I didn't need to. He was willing to travel, arrived at the wedding before I even did, and took great initiative with very little direction from me. I did not notice him at all during the ceremony or reception, yet he was able to get great shots. We received the video soon after the wedding and absolutely love the highlight clip. I would definitely recommend Gary Magill.

Clifton did a wonderful job filming our wedding ceremony, but even more wonderful setting up live streaming of the ceremony so that our family internationally could attend the ceremony. He was very responsive when concerns came up along the way and even after the wedding in getting us additional live stream info. Re-watching the ceremony he recorded, the wind did make it a bit hard to hear, however the filming itself was great. What Clifton did for us was invaluable. Thank you for all your work before, during and after the wedding ceremony!

We decided last minute to hire a videographer for our wedding, literally the day before. We’re so glad we found Dennis. He got our video done super quickly and it’s beautiful. Brought us both to tears.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
