Let me begin by stating that working with Arya has been a phenomenal experience. I originally discovered him through Yelp one night when I was looking for nearby counselors. He's listed down as a life coach and counselor, but what really caught my eye was his 5.0/5.0 rating and number of reviews (40+ at the time). It's very uncommon for someone to have such a perfect rating alongside a large quantity of reviews. I thought something weird was going on so I decided to send in an application for an intake appointment. To be honest I had low expectations of our meeting. I've met with counselors in the past and they hadn't been super helpful to me. Not to discount their abilities, it just more or less felt they were reading off of a script of sorts or working with me from an emotional distance. Of course there must always be some professionalism in play, I don't expect them to suddenly become my best bud after a session. I just want some recognition that I'm a struggling human being on the same level they are versus a patient to dissect underneath a microscope. So color me surprised when Arya did not act like my past counselors! It genuinely feels like Arya will get in the dirty and grimy pits of your life and sit there alongside with you, yet still providing a personally-catered path to somewhere a little cleaner (more appropriate to label it as possessing more vitality, I don't know my audience so I am avoiding usage of that potentially confusing word). You're never forced to do something uncomfortable, but if you're willing to be scared of trying something new then he'll help you ease into it. He's also a pretty smart dude. He doesn't flaunt it whatsoever, it more so comes off from how knowledgeable and skilled he is in several varied areas. If you're an individual that thinks in a certain way and have trouble adapting your perspective then Arya is great for speaking in terms you will understand. There's no sense of condescension on his part, but rather he completely understands that we all operate in our own unique way. It's like if you're trying to express a certain idea in English to a guy that only speaks Spanish. Arya primarily speaks English but he's also a successful polyglot. I didn't know how much of a welcome blessing it was to finally have someone understand the place I operate from until I met him. This definitely accelerates the process of getting unstuck in certain old habits since he can recognize them and notify me of what's going in without too much confusion flying around. I haven't worked with him extensively on making myself a more desirable worker or starting up businesses so I can't speak from that standpoint. I have worked for several months now on learning how to enjoy life and myself on a deeper level. I had no clue I would be here the first time I met him. I urge you to try out an intake appointment with him. His online presence is decent but it doesn't even hold a candle to his physical presence. It may change your life in a similar way to how it's changing mine.

Scientifically grounded. Emotionally intelligent. Shannon helped me get unstuck. Seeing any counselor at all was a big deal for me. I had bad experiences with them in the past. Not only was she able to put me at ease, not only was her advice concrete and useful, she helped me explore my concerns in a way that was as stunning as it was fun. It was more helpful, more quickly, and more enjoyably than any other counseling experience I've ever had.

After two years together, my boyfriend and I have been contemplating couples therapy. I always thought couples counseling was just for married people who despised each other but I couldn't have been more wrong. After just one session, I feel better. We have been learning the importance of communication and how to rebuild trust especially in a long distance relationship. Diana gave us direct feedback on what we were doing and how we can improve individually and as a couple. We had good takeaways and feel better about how to comfort each other if similar issues arise again.

I’m so glad I reached out to Wade for counseling. He is such a talented therapist. He really made me feel safe and understood and I didn’t feel judged. Initially when I came to see him I was unsure if I should start therapy. I’m so glad I did! Wade has helped me to see things more clearer and I’ve gained better insight on the issues I came to address. I feel less anxious and depressed and have more confidence. He truly is a miracle worker! I’m just writing this review because I want others to reach out and not be fearful about getting therapy, as I had hesitated for way too long. Thank you Wade!

Lauren is a great listener and really takes the time to evaluate your personality and understand your needs and wants so that she can find the best possible matches for you. I highly recommend Lauren and can't wait for more matches!

We have licensed and intern therapists available for individuals, children, and families with difficulties with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, addiction, eating disorders, LGBT, spiritual, and relationships. We tailor our work to best serve our clients' individual needs, as we offer many approaches to the healing art of therapy.

As a private college counselor, I provide college counseling and essay editing services to help aspiring high school students who want to gain admission to the Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, UChicago, and other competitive universities. My stellar track record of getting students into the top 6 schools (HYPSMC) in the country speaks for itself, as I help students from all backgrounds tackle the application process. I have helped even under-achieving, subpar students gain admission to one of the top six schools through a rigorous application process that helps the applicant to stand out from his or her peers. I graduated with a degree in economics from Princeton University.

I founded Be Love Community Counseling to provide safe, healing space for people who have been oppressed, marginalized or have an identity outside of the dominant culture. Historic trauma and past hurts may show up as having challenges in relationships, depression, anxiety, anger management issues, low self-esteem, underachievement, oppositional behaviors, etc. You may think that something is wrong with you while what you're experiencing may actually be a result of something that has happened to you or your ancestors. Therapy is empowering as you may increase awareness about what is keeping you from freedom to live the life you desire. We may meet for a brief period, and you'll learn and practice coping skills, or we can take time needed to focus on the root of the problems and identify the best solutions for you. You may gain deeper knowledge of your true self and what creates joy and ease. I use an "eclectic" approach to personalize counseling to meet the unique needs of the individuals who I serve. This means I use a variety of different treatment modalities including, but are not limited to eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), family systems, solution-focused brief therapy, play, sand tray, expressive arts, spiritual, narrative, mindfulness, psychodynamic and humanistic therapies. Issues that may be addressed in counseling are many, but I focus on growing your strengths and supporting you to live the life that you desire. I don't pretend to have all answers, but I'm honest and will share if I can help.

I provide services in Reiki and psychological counseling for individuals and couple's therapy to children and adults. Bach Flower Therapy is administered when needed according to the specific cases. I have accessible rates. I am available only by appointment.

One of the reasons why it's so convenient to see me for counseling is the flexibility that Heidi F Yoder, mft Life Skills Stylist allows you. This is delivered in two ways: * Accessibility - did you find that you'll be out of town during your appointment? We can use Skype or use other forms of online therapy. Studies have shown online therapy to be just as, and sometimes more, effective than in-person therapy. Working with teens or those struggling with depression, getting outside and doing eco-therapy can be a good idea. Studies have shown that information taken in under the influence of endorphins (caused by both exercise and nature) is learned more deeply, like the difference between hearing something, writing something, and repeating something back. * Diversification - types of services offered. An individual may be seeing me for skill development work that initiates a fulfillment career change. Later, that same individual may bring his partner in for some work on communication theory to help resolve some of their core issues. During this work, some material about their child may come up, and it becomes obvious that later, a few laser-focus CBT sessions would greatly benefit the teen's patterns of thinking around managing expectations and organization, in a way that brings her/him positive outcomes.

Change is not easy! And yet sometimes, the pain of difficult feelings, a challenging situation or a rocky relationship can overwhelm everything else. At such times, you may feel compelled to try something new and to give up exhausted efforts at doing it alone. In counseling, you can find relief from anxious thoughts, painful relationships, and self-defeating behaviors. Therapy offers you the opportunity to heal from your past, better manage your present and develop more adaptive and fulfilling ways of being. In my practice, I see women, men, couples, families and groups of many ages and cultural backgrounds. No two situations are ever exactly alike. At the same time, there are some issues that I work with more than others, and these are listed here: * Trauma * Divorce * Anxiety * Lost Women (please see my website for more information) * Grief or Loss I am a certified practitioner of EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) and expressive arts therapy (EXA). EMDR is a mind-body technique that's used to process disturbing memories (i.e.: traumatic events) that contribute to unexplained fears and self-defeating beliefs and behaviors. EXA is a therapeutic modality that's dedicated to the use of creativity as a vehicle for change. For more information on these techniques and how they work, please feel free to visit my website. You are also welcome to contact me for a free 15-minute consultation.

As a full-service college consultant, I specialize in the application process and the requirements for college campuses. I seek to streamline the process for students and their family by organizational help and time line creation, teacher recommendation letter organization, essay guidance, and application assistance to help facilitate a student’s analytical processes as he or she considers what is best for learning interests and campus environments. Formerly a high school classroom teacher, my style is casual, fun and low key. Students know that I am available to them at any time and regularly keep in touch with them via texting and even Facebook. Whether a student is seeking tutoring for an academic subject such as English or history, or needs assistance preparing for the ACT and SAT, I tailor my tutoring to meet the students' individual needs. The fact that my students continue to stay in touch and seek out services after they have gone to college attests to the fact that they know I care about helping them make the most of their education.

Families of every size turn to family and marriage counseling to help sort through their usually overwhelming everyday obstacles.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

  • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
  • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
  • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
  • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
  • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
  • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
  • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
  • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
  • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
  • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
  • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
  • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
  • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
  • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
  • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
  • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
  • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
  • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
  • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
