I started looking at dog trainers a couple months ago but wasn’t able to get one until just recently, but Valerie was one I had talked to in the beginning and she followed up with me and when we were ready she was ready to get started. We did a private in home training with her this week which went well and she actually recommended doing a group obedience class since our dog doesn’t like people but loves dogs and learns well from them. Which actually saves us a lot of money so it was nice that she even recommended that and was looking for his best interest in learning, and not her best interest of making more money. We will be starting the group training next week and I’m excited to continue working with her and see if she’s able to help our baby in the long run.

Mark is the best of the best canine trainers! We have hired our share of dog trainers over the past 30 years and none have come close to offering the outstanding approach and knowledge base that Mark brings to his clients. He really takes his time to listen to whatever issues we have and teaches us how to achieve results quickly. We have a seven month old rescue pup who lived in a garage for the first five months of her life and was never socialized around people and other dogs. Mark met "Peanut" at our home and right away she kept her distance from him, barking and feeling threatened. By the end of the first session Peanut was eating out of Mark's hand and by the end of the second session Peanut was easily going up to Mark and rolling over for him wanting a belly rub. Talk about trust...Mark has a way with dogs that we've never witnessed and he taught us more in two sessions than we could have hoped to learn in a year with someone else. Mark knows dogs and if we could give him a ten star rating we would. We look forward to working with him to help Peanut become a confident, socialized and well trained member of our family. Our ultimate goal is for her to become a therapy dog in the senior community. We can't say it enough...Mark is awesome and we highly recommend him for all your dog training needs!

I am very pleased to recommend Off Leash K9 Training! My dog Cooper a 1.5 year old Lab/Pitt mix is a lovable energetic pup - loves to play, be around children, and get in trouble. His main issues were listening, barking - a lot, jumping, running out the door and going wild outside like a mad man (the norm?). I was afraid he was going to complete training and loose his playfulness? That was not the case! He is still the same dog.. just better! He listens and he just understands... we trust each other more, we can play outside off-leash with the nieces and nephews, go on long hikes, and be around more people who are not use to 80lbs dogs. The first long run I took Cooper off-leash, we passed by a crying baby, a group of people playing volleyball, a man carrying a stick, and another pitt... seriously I don't know he would could have possible passed any other tempting situations - Cooper stayed by my side the whole time! My nervous running partner was amazed and we even received an invite to her lake house! When I picked Cooper up from his board and train, at first I felt a bit overwhelmed and thought perhaps I was the one who really needed the training, but Nick made it clear that I could still ask him questions anytime I needed (and share success stories!). Cooper is a great dog and I am glad I made the decision to bring him to OLK9! Thanks again Ciarra, Danny, and Nick =)

Amazing! David was amazing with my dog. I had a dog who had several issues on top of not having any obedience. We tried other trainers before him and they couldn't help him. We finally found David and he did a wonderful job. He got our dog to stop lunging, barking, tearing up our things, helped us build a bond, and taught him obedience commands. I am very grateful for everything he's done.

We hired Dixie for our 4 year old shepherd for her anxiety issues. We had a very bad experience with another "dog trainer" so we were apprehensive about any dog trainers. Dixie was referred to us & we are so glad we called! She is wonderful! Patient, calm & a wealth of information! In 2 weeks with her help & advice we are seeing improvements with our dog! I highly recommend Dixie.

Bethany is a wonderful dog trainer. She is reliable, knowledgeable, and communicates very effectively. She took the time to listen to the concerns of the family and understood what we wanted to achieve with our dog. Using clear directions, she made me feel successful at training my dog and furthering our relationship. Bethany was also very observant about our dog, and helped me to understand what he was feeling when we tried thing other trainers had suggested (but hadn't worked). And, her email recaps of each training session are fabulous at helping keep us on track. I would highly recommend her for anyone looking to help their dog with any issues they have. She's Great!

The crew at Off Leash k9 Training Palm Springs surpasses my expectations. I really didn’t know if there was any hope for me or my puppy, but the training my dog received, and the education I was given was second to none. I can literally take my dog anywhere now and she doesn’t even need a leash. It’s literally a different dog experience when you can let them roam off Leash with the confidence that they’ll come when called, and Off Leash of Palm Springs can deliver that life changing experience in just 14 days! Thank you so much to Morgan and her staff.

My completely spoiled Hound Dog needed help in many areas. After working with Brieana at Upward Dog Training, I learned so much. I followed her advice and tips and I'm happy to say, me and my dog Lion have a 100% better relationship. Once I learned how to teach him, he learned so fast. I had a great experience and have recommended them to my friends and family.

Nina is an excellent dog trainer. My dog had behavioral issues such as peeing in the house and showing aggression towards other dogs and her training has curbed these bad behaviors. My relationship with my dog is much better now. I highly recommend her to anyone who needs dog training of any kind because she is extremely knowledgeable about everything!

      About

Learn to read your dog or puppy's body language so that you can quickly be in control, and have a dog that's a pleasure to be around. I will teach you how to understand and read your dog's body language, so that training will be very easy for you and your dog. If you have an understanding of what your dog is trying to communicate to you, then you can stop unwanted behaviors like: -people aggression -dog aggression -anxiety -fear -growling and barking Once you understand animal body language, your dog will provide you the position of being the leader and everything else will fall into place. Basic obedience training is included, such as: -come -sit -stay and down I believe that once your dog recognizes you as pack leader all your struggles will end and future training will be much simpler for you both. After all, if your dog can't trust you then he's not going to respect you. If he doesn't respect you, he's not going to follow your commands. I will show you how to become one with your animal. It sounds very easy because it is. I have numerous programs that can help you and your dog. Remember, I'm the expert in reading and understanding dog and people's body languages. Dogs don't need to be on medication to make them balanced. My unique program works organically with you and your dog. He will learn boundaries and structure, just like he would in a pack of dogs. Your dog gets to be a dog and do is natural, while you remain in control.

      About

I am a certified dog trainer and behavioral specialist. We have a really fun training yard. I offer three classes for $20.00. I've been doing training for over 25 years. I believe that animals are a lot like us and learn from mistakes; I believe that it takes three years to fully train a dog. I go at the pace of the dog and owner. I take each dog and train them to their human's lifestyle. We teach words to the dogs and teach body language to the humans. I use many different methods. We need to understand that they are just animals, not robots, and make mistakes just like us. It's how we learn.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
