After I finished writing my book I went online in search of a book editing service. Fortunately this search led me not only to Thumbtack, where I received a number of excellent options, but to Kathleen Tracy. After reading her profile she was the person I most wanted to work with based on her experience and I was very lucky to do so. The difference in the initial draft I had sent her to the finished project she returned was unbelievable and a testament to her talents. She is certainly a professional writer and will enhance any project she takes on. It was a great surprise that someone with her talent and experience was available to assist me. My recommendation could not be any higher. Thank you Kathy!

Carla Campbell is truly a blessing. She is a great writer with a passion for writing and a heart of gold. I am writing my first mini series and Carla was able to give some great ideas as well as proofread and edit the information that I provided her with. I would definitely recommend her for any writing projects that you may need help with. She will be on the journey with me as I prepare to start on Book 2. Thanks again Carla for everything that you have done and will continue to do for me!

I don't even know where to begin in telling you just how highly I recommend Tracy. As a first time author, it was a bit daunting to interview editors and select one. But I had 5 key-words in mind regarding how I wanted to feel while working with an editor, and when I spoke to Tracy, she fit them all. Those words were: Wisdom, Trust, Support, Joy, and Ease. So I hired her for a developmental edit, and I am so happy I did. In addition to being a skilled editor (and writer), I was impressed by her availability and her willingness to answer my ridiculously long list of questions that I sent over along with my manuscript! Tracy not only did the job I hired her to do in terms of a developmental edit, but she also helped me believe in myself as a writer and provided some major hand-holding during some stressful times in this process. Speaking of the stresses, I had already hired another editor for the copy/line edit, but I ended up going back to Tracy for that as well! I really wanted someone who would make my "already good" writing even *better*. And Tracy did just that. It was just a pleasure to work with her, and there were many times that her answers to my questions made me laugh or her line edits made me cry (because they were so good!). I feel much more confident about putting my first book, "The Multi-Orgasmic Diet," out into the world now, thanks to Tracy's beautiful edits and helpful guidance! So if you want someone with experience, skill, attention to detail, and who will truly care about your finished product, I highly recommend Tracy Teel.

David provided this first time writer with position feedback and trueful evulation of his writing skills. Sadly, my manuscript wasn't ready for editing at this time. I will rewrite and resubmit at later date. Thanks David for your insight.

Cheryl was fantastic to work with! She had a great way of going through my story and enhancing it with little tweaks and grammatical fixes without changing the storyline. She got it done quickly and efficiently and was very good about communicating with me on how everything was coming along. I really appreciated all the time and effort that she put into making my manuscript even better. I would definitely work with her again!

I'm a writer. I write basically biographies. My books are listed on Amazon under C.F.Stewart; as is my author's profile. My latest effort is doing very well on the east coast. Sales in the west have been mostly in Las Vegas because the gentleman i wrote about was a professional golfer who was associated with some of the more unsavory characters in LV history. To be fair, he was also revered by several of the more illustrious celebrities to grace the Las Vegas strip. Reviews of my work have been very satisfying.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
