Introduction: My approach to teaching music is simple: get the concepts in stone, but be flexible in method and make sure, above all else, that a love for music is cultivated. I studied in master classes at Stanford, have taught for many years as an award-winning high school instructor (piano, chamber music, chorus, orchestra, ethnomusicology, theatre), and teach private lessons to a wide range of students - both in age and ability level. I work equally well with utter beginners and conservatory-level players, and I'm happy teaching the music of Beethoven or Bowie, if you will. I'm a unique blend: I've been playing classical piano since the age of 3 (and it remains my foremost love), but I also have a strong background in rock, songwriting, and performance. I've found this allows for a really versatile and dynamic teaching style. That said, if you're seeking strictly classical music lessons, focused on technique and literacy and the amazing repertoire out there, I'm your guy. Thanks! -Alexander

I'll tell you what I told Alexander: "I have to tell you that you seemed to have cast a spell over Carly. We can't believe our eyes (and ears) as she literally now sits down at the piano as soon as she wakes up in the AM and its the first thing she does when she gets home from school. Wow - I wish I knew your secret to get an 11 year old to suddenly be so passionate about something that she had marginal interest in prior."

Alexander Eccles has gone above and beyond with teaching me piano. He has been great at evaluating my strength and weaknesses so that I can improve to be a more well rounded pianist. It's been easy to stay in love with piano because Eccles always gives me lots of options of what kind of pieces I want to play before we start working on something new. He always knows how to improve technique, and makes a point of incorporating theory into our lessons. I've had a great time taking lessons from Eccles and have learned to appreciate piano even more over the past 4 years with him.

I am an adult beginner, who started with only a modest understanding of how to read music and music theory. I had one piece I wanted to learn how to play when I started with Alex, and he was terrific at teaching me what I needed to know. He was very patient for the span of three or so months it took me to learn the piece. After that I learned several additional pieces that were more challenging. Alex also included scales, theory and exercises along the way that improved my abilities and understanding. Not only was Alex great with being patient with my modest abilities, but he also challenged me, knowing where I could go even better than I did. I had many lessons with Alex that were truly delightful and educational, leaving me with a desire to practice and learn more. Learning what music is and how it is executed is a wonderful place to spend time, especially with Alex who makes it enjoyable. Alex is terrific with the technical as well as the artistic and performance aspects of a piece. I will find rewards for the rest of my life at the keyboard which Alex has so graciously introduced me to.
