Two years ago, in October 2013, I met Doug from Gillespie Doors. He came to my house, to install a new garage access door (the current one wouldn’t withstand the weather elements) with a built-in doggy door. Having a construction background, I knew that it was very important to hire an experienced person when hanging doors. Doug instructed me to get the dog door that I wanted and he would put it in for me prior to him showing up. Doug was supposed to be at the house at 7 am, however, he arrived 15 minutes early (rarely in these days). He had the old jamb out and the new door fit in about 30 minutes. When it was completed, the door looked like it had been there for 40 years. Very professional install, that’s what happens when you hire someone with a contractor’s license whose number is 742587 and has what I have come to learn is over 25 years, in California, installing doors. Last year, in December; I called on Doug again but with a very different problem. I hired a General Contractor (GC) to rehab my mother-in-law rental house. (The GC was to replace all interior, exterior and metal security doors. When I took my mother-in-law to look at the rehab progress we saw disturbing door hanging practices, such as exterior doors having been installed with spray foam and a few screws and the back, exterior door of which the contractor disturbingly bought and installed an out-swing door. When we followed up with the GC, the response was along the lines of “…we put in like for like. If you want it done different do it yourself.” What happened to doing it correctly the first time?) With that said, I called Doug at Gillespie Doors and he moved around his schedule to get me in the next day. Upon arrival he noticed several items that were incorrect with the doors that my GC installed, and only a licensed door professional would be able to tell these issues: The entry door that the GC installed was placed over the old rotten oak sill, which Doug found was loose and the GC tried to fix it in place with expanding foam insulation. That did not work because, after Doug removed the poorly installed pre-hung unit, the oak sill literally fell out. While removing the pre-hung unit, Doug noticed that there were hardly any shims holding the frame in place, but instead the GC had screwed the door jamb in place (roughly), and then filled it in with foam insulation and without any shims so nothing was plumb or square. This then caused the entry door to rub on the floor when opened halfway, and would not allow for carpet or padding for that matter. On the rear door of the house, Doug found the GC installed that as poorly as the front door as it also had the expanding foam insulation and very few shims, but it was the WRONG door completely. The GC bought an out swinging door, and installed it backwards to swing in. If the GC would have left that in place, in Doug’s estimation, it would have leaked like a sieve. Doug also noticed on this door that the installer had filled a gap in the rough opening with small pieces of 1” x 4” when a single piece was called for. Doug is a hard worker and knows his trade. Hanging doors is an art and from the examples above a GC shouldn’t be screwing around hanging doors. Doug correctly installed my Entry Door along with the Rear Door. He also re-hung the security doors that my GC took off that never re-installed. Doug went so far above and beyond that he helped me fix an interior door that the GC never cut the bottom off to allow for carpet. I am totally satisfied with the workmanship from Doug. I will only be calling him to handle all of my door projects in the future.

I inquired about replacing hinges, door knobs and also added replacing doors. Dr. Door was very responsive via email, listened to my concerns and ideas and offered a very fair price up front. He arrived on time, got to work right away and cleaned up as he worked. I added some extra projects once I saw the quality of his work and was very pleased with the price and finished results. He was very friendly professional and would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Door. BTW he does other services as well so ask if you need other work done. He is a gem and I am so happy I hired him.

Derrick has set me up to get a screen door installed at 7am on Friday. He sent a message around 5:30am saying he wouldn't be able to make because his car broke down on the freeway and he asked if he could reschedule for Sat morning. I said that would be ok and we agreed 7am Sat morning. Sat morning rolls around at 7am and no one shows up. I waited until 9am and no one still showed up so I left to take care of some business. Derrick texts me around 12 and asked if his person did the door and if I was satisfied with the job. I texted Derrick back to say no one had showed up. Derrick then said he would be out there later to take care of your door. I arrived home at 5:30pm, at 6 I heard Derrick brining equipment out of his car getting ready to start working. Derrick stayed until about 8 working on my door making sure it was installed correctly with the locks he installed as well. He even had to take the security door down and move it because it wasn't closing properly. He didn't ask for extra for doing this but I gave it to him. I didn't have faith in Derrick showing up Sat evening at 1st but once he arrived his work was up to par and he made sure everything was done properly. We finally got a secure door on our back door thanks to Derrick. I will be using him in the future for other jobs. I recommend you use him for your jobs as well. Sincerely, Taurus Satisfied Customer

Professionals here are hit or miss (even with good review) But they have proven the good reviews were real. They were prompt in response, took time to explain, review, confirm the project prior to the appointment. Showed up, finished in time, done the job all right (there were 6 rekeys, new door knobs, a little complicated) and gave extra keys no charge. Two thumbs up!

Gudiel was on time and very helpful. We had to take off our sliding glass door and move a bunch of furniture out. He had a positive attitude and made sure there was nothing else he could do to help before leaving. I would absolutely recommend him!

Victor painted my nursery and it looks great (walls, doors and baseboards). He showed up on time, and was clear about the details of his quote (which I did not experience with 2 other quotes). He ended up patching the holes in the wall from my tv mount which also look great. He maintained professionalism and even finished the job a bit early! I would recommend him for interior paint work and minor household repairs.

Alon arrived as scheduled and looked at the lock that have been giving me a lot of trouble in the last few weeks. He immediately found the fault in the frame of the door that caused the lock to fail. He adjusted the door and replaced the lock with a heavy duty lock. He even matched the lock to my existing home key so I won't need to carry around additional keys. A++ service.

I had wonderful experience with Paul. Paul is highly knowledgeable and experienced locksmith man. Paul corrected multiple errors made by now a former handyman who attempted to install front door lock. Paul identified the errors and explained to me how backward parts were installed on my lock. Paul fixed it and installed the lock correctly. I highly recommend Paul for this types of job. My best regards to you all. Great job Paul. Thanks.

Great Experience. Posted that I was looking to install uniquely keyed locks, in two bedroom doors from a 1940s apartment that had mortise pocket locks with a skeleton key on one and just a mortise privacy lock on the other, both in a metal door frame. I clarified that I would prefer them to be smart locks with keypad entry. Came out the day I originally posted the job to give me an estimate and recommendation on the best way to accomplish what I wanted. I purchased my own lockset, and a month later asked if he was still available; he came out the next morning. Communicated well through the whole process, did great work, and was even 15 minutes early for my appointment. Will definitely use again! Thank You!

Paul has been exemplary from start to finish. His responsiveness is second to none in this field, and the jobs that could have taken a month with other contractors was completed in 10 very efficient days. Initially I was just looking for help rehanging doors. I was so happy with the result, I asked Paul to take on a few other jobs, including refinishing the hardwood floors, repairing another patio door, replacing a broken window and painting the interior of half my house. Highly recommended. Thanks Paul!

You can tell by his work he have professional experience for over 35 years. I like how professional his work is done & how polished it is when it"s completed. I had my bathroom painted, a wood frame covered up pluming that the last handyman left out. He helped fix up work that the last handyman left poorly. So I trusted in him to insert 2 bedroom new doors and a wooden gate for my driveway. I highly recommend him. He speaks perfect English & Spanish.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
