I've been working out with John for over 3 years, and he has transformed my body. He helped me lose about 13 pounds before my wedding. He's more than just a personal trainer - he's a life and health coach as well. I know if I have any questions about health or what I should be eating, I can always send him a note, and he'll respond. Every workout we do is always different. He keeps things interesting, and I always leave feeling good/sore. John is the best!

Debi has been my life coach since February 2010. Her work is amazing!! During these five years, she has enabled me to tap deeper and deeper into my natural wisdom. It has been powerful for me to have Debi as a witness to my transformation. She sees my life challenges clearly and provides feedback in a positive and supportive way. She is quick to point out my successes and shares them with me joyously and enthusiastically. Working with Debi is the best personal investment I have ever made. She is a trusted partner in my personal and spiritual growth!

Working with Nicole: WOW! Nicole is at the top of her game! She's enthusiastic and professional. She's prepared and punctual. Her methodology and coaching are comprehensive, creative and targeted for the modern market place. My cover letters, resume and interview prep are anything but generic! She has tailored them to reflect me uniquely. Having been out of the work place for 10 years, raising a family, she has prepared me to be confident and competitive as I begin a new career. I know that my relationship with her will most certainly continue. She's an asset in regards to staff development, communication strategies, and furthering future career steps towards higher management. I cant recommend working with her enough! Thank you, Nicole!

I spoke with Velina on Skype about the challenges I'm dealing with in my life and she was really helpful. I highly recommend her to anyone having difficulties or needing a good coach in their life. She seems to know a lot and has a lot of experience helping people with all kinds of issues. For me, I really felt like she cared deeply for me and understood me like a close friend and yet is very professional. She is warm and kind. I'm so glad I found her. She helped me so much.

I've been working with Arya as my life coach for over 5 years now. He has helped me navigate so many different aspects of my life, from completing law school, to ins and outs of relationships (and now marriage), to reconnecting with my own body when I've felt out of touch, and so much more. I consider his insight invaluable to my life, and always appreciate how he guides me to more powerful places of being. He always has new approached to teach me when I'm feeling stagnant and is always learning and growing himself. I'd recommend him to anyone!

I am a mid-career professional seeking to change direction and I couldn’t have ask for a better Career Coach than Dr. Milwid. Dr. Milwid is a skilled guide. She begins by leading you through a self-exploration that helps you understand not only what you’re looking for but also what you have to offer. She then turns tactical and offers extremely helpful and practical guidance for restructuring the primary documents needed for an effective job search: your resume and cover letters. Throughout, Dr. Milwid shares relevant articles and research and brings to bear her decades of experience advising people and her own multi-faceted career. Dr. Milwid is also extremely encouraging and a genuine pleasure to work with. You’ll leave your sessions with Dr. Milwid feeling energized and prepared to embark on a targeted and effective job search. I feel lucky to have worked with her and am confident you’ll feel the same.

I've worked with Lisa both personally and professionally. What I love about her style is that she is direct and doesn't spend a lot of time circling an issue. For two reasons that is perfect for an entrepreneur: 1. I'm paying for the time, I want to squeeze the most out of every minute. 2. I need every moment I can get to make my business successful so I want to squeeze the most out of every minute. I think coaching is critical to EVERY small business owner. There is someone outside of yourself asking about your accountability. Are you on track? Do you wish you were growing faster? Do you have a solid, reliable teM around you? Are you happy? If you answered yes, coaching can help you stay the course. If you answered no to any of those questions...run, don't walk, to coaching. Best investment I ever made! Gini Swancy Designs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

    • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
    • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
    • Defining your career goals
    • Creating a plan for job searching
    • Improving networking strategies and skills
    • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
    • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
    • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

    Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

    • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
    • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
    • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
    • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
    • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
    • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
    • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

    What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.
