Harp and his team did a very satisfying interior and exterior painting of our hose. He helped us in choosing right color for our house. It is hard to find decent painters in these days. We glad we found harp and his crew. Our hose look so great, thank you harp and his team. Highly recommend

Ricardo was super professional, great at responding, and did a really amazing job painting our two accent walls. We also had a blocked sink when he came and he took care of that too. He had all the tools and even gave us some suggestions to help save us money. I would totally hire him again!

I was very glad that I found Milko Young. I am a landlord from Texas and I came to Berkeley to help with my daughter's move-in to a small house. I appreciated someone like Milko who is professional, honest, and easy to work with. He was great and is a true painter and handyman. His work included painting, fixing cracks in the ceiling/walls, installing various household items (ceiling fans, light fixtures), and staining the patio deck. He is also very thorough, he made sure fixtures like the smoke alarms were in working condition. I'm very picky about people who work for me and Milko went beyond my expectations. We are definitely planning to continue to have Milko do more work for us (landscaping & general handyman) in the weeks to follow. Thanks Milko!

Not only did Larry respond quickly, he knew just what to do to repair our wall. There were 2 steps, with 15 minutes in between. He is such a fabulous people person! Turns out his son does painting, so when we're ready for that we know just where to go. I highly recommend Larry, without a doubt.

He always showed up on time and was incredibly responsive. He was professional and followed up to make sure we were happy with his work. We enjoyed working with him and would recommend him and his crew any time!

Eduardo and Jose were phenomenal, period. They painted our home in the Inner Sunset, and did a spectacular job. I am a very picky diva, and I am so very happy - thrilled - with their work. Eduardo and Jose sourced the scaffolding and even found us a roofer on very short notice when we agreed the roofing over our bay windows was in very poor condition. There were things I wanted - color and paint type and finish type - and Jose collaborated with me on everything. He did not hesitate to explain some technical elements of which I was unaware. I have had a lot of experience with painters, and I am adamant about using Benjamin Moore paint only. I have had instances where the painters swap in cheap paint even though I have specified exactly what I want. (It is absolutely imperative to use high quality paint or one is simply wasting money on labor.) Well, Eduardo and Jose are also firm believers in Benjamin Moore products, so it was a very happy collaboration!! Everything was very reasonable priced and transparent. The prep work was outstanding. This is a highly professional team, but also very friendly. Do not hesitate to hire them! I plan to ask for more services in the future! See photos below, the tan and brown on the left is the before photo, the photo on the right in pearl grey, deep brown, and blue lake is the after photo. The photos really do not do the house justice... the lustre and richness of the new paint over properly prepared surfaces - it is just gorgeous. Thank you so much, Eduardo and Jose!

Juan put up trim and baseboard on newly textured and painted walls. He is so professional. He met my husband at home depot to buy supplies. Arrived on time, was really efficient and cleaned up really well before he left. He walked us through everything he did and told us how to proceed (painting and sanding) I appreciated the flat rate vs hourly for the job I posted. We’ve already talked about another small project I would like him to do for us. Thanks Juan!

We had Renew Painting update the paint in our home and the results were fantastic ! We used Benjamin Moore paint and with the professional application of Eric and his team, it really turned out amazing. The painting crew worked diligently on each and every room of the house. Great attention to detail in the most critical areas such as the windows and where the ceiling meets the walls. They were very clean, organized and finished on time ! We would absolutely use them again in other painting and updating projects. They are highly recommended !

I highly recommend Economy Home Repair, which recently completed a job at our 1910s house in Berkeley including replacement of some rotten siding, installation of two new windows, and painting all on the 2nd floor of the house. We could not be happier with our experience. Signing up with Kris was a no-brainer: his team has stellar reviews, his bid for the job was more than fair, and he arrived on-time for meetings and responded promptly to emails. This was extremely hard work - not the most fun job - and I was particularly impressed that Carl and his team completed the job safely after just 5 consecutive days. Given my prior experience with contractors and jobs that can extend for weeks or longer, it is unusual to get that kind of attention. All the materials were high quality, and I cannot find a single flaw in Carl's workmanship. Overall had a very positive experience, and I'm particularly happy to have found a trustworthy contractor I can turn to for future work.

Neil Cudden Painting did our 3-story duplex, front and back. The entire job was excellent. The price was very fair, and when I would comment on something during the workday, they would do extra effort to make the customer happy. Paul and Jose were my two main guys, and they are experienced enough to maintain a high level quality throughout the work period. I could quibble about the scaffolding being up longer than we hoped but because of their overall quality of work, my wife and I have no real complaints. Great job.

Mike of Lamorinda Painting delivered excellent customer service. He did a beautiful job painting our house in Martinez within the committed timeframe. He replaced the dry rot trim boards, filled the cracks and gaps and prepared the exterior surface to ensure proper adhesion of paint. Mike worked well with our tenants living in the house; they said he was very courteous. A couple of the homeowners in the neighborhood stopped by and commented on the beautiful paint job. Based on our positive experience with Mike, we would not hesitate to hire Lamorinda Painting for any future painting.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.
