I hired Harp to fix the installation of the legs to our new air hockey table which we installed incorrectly. Not only did Harp fix what we knew we installed wrong, he found something else about the installation which was vital to its stability and fixed it too. I also had him look at a couple of other small projects and he went above and beyond my expectations for their repairs too. I have had Harp come to the house one other time for repairs and I'm scheduling another. He is extremely capable at fixing everything I've asked--be it carpentry, electrical, plumbing and even gardening.

I needed to have a new water line installed to my refrigerator and Ronaldo was not only quick to respond but he was very flexible with scheduling a date. He was able to install the refrigerator plumbing in 30 minutes and was helpful in answering any questions I had throughout the whole process. I look forward to working with Ronaldo again on any future plumbing needs that may come up.

Ricardo is fast, honest, and super reasonably priced. I would not hesitate to hire him again in an instant. I had a couple of plumbing issues that popped up after a renovation, and not only did Ricardo fix them, he even gave me advice on what to do if the issues happen again. Seriously, Ricardo is the best.

We had a leaking garbage disposal unit in our kitchen that we wanted to get replaced. I reached out to Ray and he responded promptly within a few hours and we setup the appointment very quickly. On the day of the appointment, Ray and his colleague arrived on time and did the work in a very professional manner. Ray informed me that some plumbing part needed to be replaced and he went to the hardware store and got it. Unfortunately, the new part was cracked and he had to go back to the store to get another replacement part. They made sure to wear the shoe covers when they were working inside the house (Bonus points for that) Overall, we were very happy with the work performed by Ray.

Danny was exceptionally professional and approachable. Unlike experiences I have had in the past with other companies, he seemed trustworthy and honest. He took care to evaluate the problem (a leaking water heater drain valve) thoroughly and explained all of his findings and different options well. We did spend a bit more than we anticipated because of another problem discovered, which was the only challenge as a novice to the plumbing world. So happy to have found Oak Plumbing and Danny and would definitely contact the, again for future plumbing needs!

C plumbing was great! It took a couple tries to find a coordinating time for C to come install a kitchen faucet and soap dispenser due to my hectic work schedule but Cam was patient and accommodating. When we finally settled on a time, he and his partner showed up on time, and we're quick, efficient, and friendly. Our new kitchen faucet is exactly what we wanted and would recommend C plumbing for any plumbing jobs.

He arrived on time, looked at the issues, quoted a fair price up front and completed the job very efficiently. I recently had a water leak outside my home and called Rusteen's House of Plumbing to resolve the issue. Chris was very courteous and helpful, assuring me he would be out to my house within hour. When the Chris arrived, he put foot coverings over his shoes before entering my home, and was dressed very professionally. He offered to provide a free plumbing inspection on site to let me know if there were any other issues I should be aware of. He even fixed the faucet in my bathroom which had been bothering me for over a year! He gave me an "Option Sheet" before beginning any of the work so that I was made fully aware of what work was going to be performed, as well as exactly how much it was going to cost. There were no hidden fees or surprises. When Chris was done, I recieved a call the next day to make absolutely sure that I was 100% satisfied with the work performed and asked if I needed anything. He even asked me if there was anything he could have done to improve the service! Rusteen's House of Plumbing is amazing! Rusteen's House of Plumbing is the only plumber I will ever call again!!

Jason and Carlos came out to take a look at my toilet, which had been running on and off and was having trouble flushing. They fixed the toilet however recommended due to the toilet's age that I replace. Unfortunately it started having an issue later that night. Jason came back the next day and did further work on the toilet at no charge, which seemed to fix the issue. Low and behold it started acting up again. They came out a third time (at no charge) and did what they could, however we are still having issues and decided to purchase a new toilet. We will definitely be using them for future plumbing issues!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
