Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Confirmed a 1pm move with Matt one week prior to pick up. On day of move, Matt moves pick up to 3pm. Not that Matt called to let us know, we had to call him. Ok, we roll with it as Matt guarantees us he will complete the move. Well needless to say 3pm comes and goes. No Matt except a text message to say he has canceled our move now putting us in the worst predicament possible. Goes without saying, not recommending Matt’s motivated movers..not that motivated.

Tony and his guys are professional, efficient and committed to full service. I never had a moving company take down the beds and put them back together. If I have any future moves or any friends looking for a great moving company, I will not hesitate to refer Tony!

M&M Movers is an excellent company. I would definitely use them again, and definitely recommend them to anyone who is moving. I moved from East Bay to the Phoenix area. I had 6 different moving companies provide cost estimates and explain to me how they will handle my household goods. I have many pieces of furniture I purchase from all over the world and to me they are priceless. JR is the only one who convinced me that he would treat my furniture with the care I believe it deserves - and he followed through. And another plus, is that the price he quoted was the price I paid. All other companies gave me estimates that could not be guaranteed. JR delivered my household goods within 3 days of pickup - he could have delivered sooner but my house was not ready for a quicker delivery. All other companies told me that it would be 7-10 days before they would deliver - this was not acceptable. The only "complaint" I have is that at delivery, they didn't fully set up my adjustable bed; they didn't connect the power cord to the underside of the platform. I called JR and he said that one of his folks would return to complete the setup. The guy never showed up. The platform for the bed is too heavy for me to move, but a neighbor helped. That's the only thing that I could say didn't go well. There was no damage to anything. This is the best move I've ever had and I've moved a lot! I surely recommend M&M Movers.

While discussing with jp moving services after receiving my quote they told me they couldn't come to my city to do the job because I only needed them for a certain amount of time. The quote never said there was a requirement of hours I needed to hire them for. And my quote was for furniture moving which was only an entertainment center. Needless to say I was unsatisfied with the service I recieved if they would've told me in the initial quote there was a required minimum amount of hours I wouldn't have even contacted them back and wasted my time. Moving is stressful enough thanks JP for adding more!

The two guys were amazing i was so skeptical on how they were gonna move my abnormally heavy sofa recliner with just the two of them and they did it with ease in a very timely fashion . I would definitely work with this company again and recommend their service to my friends. Warm service with a smile and casual conversation. They also moved a glass table and chairs set as well as my dresser and night stand frames witch in total was my entire 5x10 storage from 10:21-11:40 .

They were very responsive, and did a great job keeping me updated on changes in scheduling. They moved our treadmill and large credenza into our new house through the rain and hail. Although they left a few bumps and scratches in our new house, for the price, it was worth it. We’ll just be touching up our walls ourselves.

Riley and Jay were great help. Thank you Matt - the guys were very kind and helpful. They were very attentive to take care of my belongings and help me in anyway they could as I had foot surgery and it was challenging. They did more than I expected them to do. I would recommend your team to anyone they needed to be moved as they were very informative also.

Listen I was first afraid of having someone to come and trust them with my last... Readjusting my life from a 5 bedroom to at 1 was a pretty devastating hit for me...I thought at first! But, to my surprise the devastation came when retrieving my "last" from a storage company that I had entrusted for the past 2 years. To my surprised the storage company had a infestation of "Ben's" just like the movie! I stood there and just cried with my mouth open saying I can't believe this!!!! Mike the owner of this moving company was JUST UNBELIEVABLE!! He kept a calm voice and said let's talk... Not only did he understand my pain but he understood my needs! Not only did he dropped the cost for moving into my new place but, he took my "last" and now infested items and made them all disappear. Mike thank you so much! You guys will always have a special place in my ❤

Darnell and Dimitri (?) knocked it out of the park! They responded immediately and had the best price. We were able to schedule a pick up effortlessly and DMC came right on time. They were able to load in all our belongings (bedroom, kitchen, office, bathroom, storage, and living room) all in 40 minutes! Very professional, courteous, and hardworking. I was most impressed at how affordable they were for the price point! I've hired movers that took their sweet time to increase their hourly pay, but DMC doesn't mess around. They go straight to work and have enough experience to take care of your belongings. Will definitely be using DMC in the future!
