Houman was very responsive and helpful - he stopped by in the early afternoon to assess our set up and needs, and came back in the late afternoon to do the installation once I got the right equipment. Clean and professional. Would definitely recommend!

I had never done any renovations before, and I was concerned about working with a contractor. I am so glad that I chose Excel Construction to remodel my kitchen and bathroom. Eyal and the workers were a pleasure to work with. The main things that I appreciated while working with them were: - They paid attention to my needs, my thoughts, my ideas, and my vision and worked within my budget (which was the most important thing in this remodeling). - Eyal with his office staff made sure to pull all permits for the work and they just informed me when they got them or about any stage of the permit (other builders who quoted me said they did not pull permits) - Eyal made sure to spend a lot of time consulting me and explaining me before the remodeling began. This included many discussions on layouts, appliances/fixtures, designs, what to expect..... -Eyal scheduled their crew and subcontractors. They were able to completely renovate my kitchen and bathroom in 9 weeks. They worked quickly and efficiently. -They paid attention to all the details even the small ones and made sure that everything was completed to my satisfaction. - All the materials that they used, were selected by me and they used high quality raw materials. Overall, I had a good experience working with Excel Construction and would not hesitate to use them again.

Fantastic company. Simon is polite, communicative, and friendly. They did a great job installing a new central air system for me in my condo and gave me the most competitive price I've found. I'm very happy with this company - it's extremely difficult to find honest and reputable contractors nowadays, but HUS is definitely one you should add to your contacts.

The Egal Construction team was one of the most down-to-earth, honest contractors I've ever hired for a job in our office building. When we ran into an issue, they jumped on fixing it in an impossibly timely manner. Five stars, 10/10, all of the accolades I can give. Hire these guys!

Scope - replace hallway floors (due to slight flooding/leak); gut reno one of the bathrooms; customize hallway closet(s). Pros: - Contractor was prompt to respond and quick to commence the job - Joe and his team are very professional - Quality of work is good - It is apparent that State Wide has a Subject Matter Expert for every aspect of the reno (different folks for plumbing, carpentry, tiles, flooring). Most likely 3rd parties but pros nonetheless. - flexible payment structure (also accepts CCs) Cons: - Execution was very slow; perhaps Joe's team was focused on bigger projects (it was mentioned on a few occasions) and it was apparent that our reno was not prioritized. - there were items that should have been spec'd out and ordered as to avoid delays (e.g. floor should have been matched on day1, subway tiles etc..). Numerous days were wasted as the team was waiting on the materials - my biggest frustration with the reno was the lack of empathy and accountability. Excuses/justifications were presented instead of just owning up to the significant delay (work was supposed to be executed in 10-14 days max; it took 30 days). It would have been completely fine if the delay was communicated properly instead of us hounding the team. Overall, we are happy with the renovation.

Ronald is upfront, fair, honest, and hardworking -- He is everything you want out of a contractor. Shortly after purchasing my house Ronald completely remodeled my two bathrooms and now (nearly 2 years later) i'm having him do my kitchen! He is great! Ronald even helped my father-in-law out with a kitchen/ bathroom repipe and saved him thousands compared to what other plumbers were quoting!

One day we wandered into Morena and found ourselves talking with Kate about remodeling our bathrooms and possibly our kitchen. She suggested sending John out to appraise the labor cost. Soon we had John, Sami and Mike in our home and a discussion started about all the things we would like and to our amazement we were assured that they could do it all. We were pleased that we could have all the work done without having to shop for additional contractors. We agreed to refinish the kitchen cabinets, replace the kitchen island counter, install a new hood over the cooktop, reface a fireplace, extensive remodel and update of two bathrooms, repaint most of the interior of the house and re-polish all the travertine flooring. Immediately we had a bevy of workmen starting cabinet refinishing, wall and ceiling painting. Work was continuous to completion. Sami was very helpful by suggesting and selecting materials that resulted in a pleasant decor. All problems, which were minor, were corrected in a timely fashion. We were very pleased with the work that Morena Home Design did for us.

We have just finish a major update of our 1980’s tract home; remodeling the kitchen, bathrooms and flooring throughout the entire home. We were able to live in our current home that was for sale during 95% of the remodeling process which allowed Phil and his crew easier access to our home and we didn’t have to live through the noise and dust. We are very pleased with the outcome of our home and Homestar’s ability to execute our vision.

Christian and his team were the most friendliest and nicest people to work with. LA Rocca builders along with J Balian Construction and Grandeur Construction these 3 teams that Christian put together is like the saying goes “it takes a village to raise a child” well it takes 3 teams to build a home, which is what happen with our home we had so many problems with other contractors and they couldn’t do what we wanted them to do. They remodeled our home inside and out. They build our dream-home: Interior and Exterior Paitnting with a room addition, entire new kitchen and bathroom like the hotels we stayed in, along with all the extras they gave use Custom home furnishings, we are truly happy and blessed to have such great contractors that La rocca help us with. I was ready for some remodeling in my home. My kitchen needed an update and so did a few of the bathrooms. Searching google I found GIM and saw that they did energy efficient remodeling and upgrades. I contacted GIM and set an appointment for a consultant to come by to show me some options. The consultant showed us many samples of flooring, tile, roofing, painting, and multiple other products they offered. They even had their own architect to take care of the drawings for me and also had a 3d design for the kitchen. All the work was done properly and my home was left clean everyday. Appreciate all the hard work.

We had 3 bathrooms remodeled by hillstar construction, which included 2 complete remodels (master bath and Jack/Jill) and 1 minor updating of guest bath. This is our first remodeling experience and lior and his crew made every effort to accommodate our needs and requests. We relied on lior advise for details and very happy of the outcome. lior responded promptly and communicated well, and his attention to details was really good. We also noticed that hillstar construction used higher end product than other contractors when we compared the estimates and asked specific questions. They installed frameless glass showers and completely replaced floors on two bathroom, changed countertops to quartz replaced we actually had to change painter (from different paint company) to lior crew as we did not like the original work. lior crew completely removed wall paper before painting, which original paint person could not do. Major part of renovation was completed less than 2 weeks, just couple of hours for installing glass showers later and some paint work due to change of painter along the way. Overall, we are extremely satisfied with the quality of the work done and the outcome. Also, LIOR went beyond as a contractor as to helping us manage the house while we were away during renovation, and it is very much appreciated. Bottom line, he can really be trusted for the quality of work he provides.

I met with Shawn Ross, owner of Ross Renovations, to discuss the repairs needed to fix my leaky roof. He was very knowledgeable and, after a thorough inspection of my roof, he patiently explained what should be done versus what he could do for the limited funds I have available. He was very friendly, upfront and courteous. I was very disappointed that I could not hire him to do my current repairs. I plan to keep his business card handy so that I can hire him for any home repairs I will need in the future.

Had such a positive experience working with Solid Builders in 2006 when we added a gorgeous master bathroom, that they were the first people I consulted when I decided to do a major renovation of literally every room in my house in 2017. I trusted Brad and his crew to be respectful of my property and privacy, and to take special care of my cats who are not allowed outside. One of the things I like the best about this company is that the price they quote you is the ACTUAL price of the work. They do not try to "upsell" you. They will communicate honestly with you, including advising you when you are about to spend money unnecessarily. Brad actually SAVED me money! Another thing I really appreciated about everyone in this company is that when tell you a specific day and time they plan to work, they SHOW UP at that time with the materials they need (unheard of!) There isn't a lot of "down time," or gaps in the schedule. Lastly (and I could go on), these guys are very focused on client satisfaction. They do not settle for sub par work.

We are so glad we were referred to Wayne Simonian at Premier Contracting. Wayne was extremely knowledgable, experienced, and professional. My husband and I truly enjoyed working with him on our home renovation. His expertise and years of experience were apparent right off the bat. Renovations can be overwhelming, but we felt at ease and confident in him from the very beginning. He is affordable yet never lacking in quality, and his keen eye for design makes him stand out above others. Our home turned out better than we could’ve imagined. You won’t be disappointed.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
