We've been working with Garrett and S.O.T.A. Construction since February 2016 in opening our restaurant called 'Aina in San Francisco and we couldn't be happier. He came in and gave us a quote on some minor work needed and had some cool ideas. From there he ended up taking on more than we had planned after seeing his work. The work he does is fast and clean, and he always has a new idea or solution before a problem even occurs. He's kept us incredibly on budget coming up with solutions within our spend, as well he's been VERY up front about any cost and keeping any additional work cost transparent. There were no surprises in any payments, he worked hard, and had amazing communication with us. He also did a great job doing custom woodwork for us for our bathroom, tables, a brand new wine rack, outfitting a whole wooden bar, etc etc. He was also knowledgable about restaurant quotes, permits required etc which really helped us throughout the process on an important commercial job. Very responsive and all round great guy. Overall Garrett and S.O.T.A. Construction went above and beyond on what we had asked for. Highly recommended.

Scott does excellent work and is willing to take on any project. We just moved into a new home and he took care of our dry rot and awkward plumbing, as well as poorly done door work.

I gave KGA a challenge full bathroom remodel in a week in a 100 year old house! We did the painting and some Sheetrock. But he reconfigured the bathroom and major plumbing relocation new shower and tile floor. They finished by deadline (shower door was custom so that got installed a little later). He was clean and thorough. He gave great advice and listened to what I was looking for. I can't wait for our kitchen remodel!

Pro-Built Construction put in my backyard in my new home in El Dorado Hills and I could not be happier! Brent made us a partnership in that he always included me in the decision making process to come up with the best results; he is always interested in your point of view. The outstanding quality of his work is a result of his extensive knowledge of the trade and the guys he has working for him; work was very organized and there was always a crew working 5 days a week, barring weather issues. A very professional organization!

I contracted Environmental Builders to prepare my home for sale. This involved repairing and replacing siding, painting, fixing doors, plumbing and replacing flooring. Everything was done in a professional, yet friendly manner. The inevitable problems which arose were handled by Mark and he made sure everything was done right and to my satisfaction. He far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Environmental Builders to anyone planning a construction project, no matter how large or small.

We would highly recommend Kevin and Kenny for any job. We hired Kevin to do several jobs for us and his workmanship is outstanding and the quality is perfect. He is honest, provides estimates in writing and is punctual at work. He has done everything from repairs in our house to concrete work, tearing down and building a new wood pool shed, a brand new shed on the side of our house, a total remodel in our garage and converted it to a train hobby room including enclosure of the attic, building cabinets and the layout, painting, and laying carpet. His most recent job was repairing some dry rot outside of our home by laying brick around the entire garage and on the porch. We couldn't be happier with how everything turned out. Kevin and Kenny do fantastic work, are professional, friendly, and you won't be disappointed!

We have had several projects in the last eighteen months: Rebuilt front porch because of dry-rot; replaced double front entry doors and painted them; installed two custom built handrails; installed new back door, weatherproofed all windows; refurbished a bathroom - new sink and vanity top, new shower doors, new toilet, new light fixture, new floor and final painting. All projects completed in a timely manner and to our satisfaction. An easy going guy, friendly and honest and always ready to give constructive suggestions.

We have contracted with Peter Hind on two occasions for work on our house. One was a complete remodel of a bathroom and the other was a re-build of a staircase going to a second story deck. The bath remodel (which included complete gutting of the room) was accomplished well within the time allotted and on budget. The job was done to perfection with Pete giving every aspect of it his personal attention. The second job involved the re-building of the staircase got complicated because we added one of those "by the way while you're at it" jobs to replace a large window in our hobby/game room. This turned out to be more work than any of us expected because of an enormous amount of dry rot repair. Pete took the whole thing in stride and completed both jobs in a professional and timely manner. The stairs definitely exceeded my expectations and the window replacement with all its added work turned out very well. Peter Hind is a professional who truly cares about the quality of his work and customer satisfaction. He relates well to the customer and stands behind his work 100%. We highly recommend Peter Hind as a General Contractor. Larry and Sharon Wusk

It gives me great pleasure to write this recommendation letter on behalf of Equinox. I own two rental properties in the cities of Napa and American Canyon. Last year, Equinox repaired my property in Napa. This job included the painting of the exterior of the building made of stucco and wood. Equinox performed exceptionally well and went above and beyond by making sure that work was completed to my satisfaction (on time and within budget). Additionally, Equinox worked diligently in repairing a wooden deck and an iron bridge that connects the deck to the patio. After the work was done, the house recovered its luster and beauty! Equinox painted the exterior of my second property in American Canyon. This building is made up mostly of stucco. They power washed the exteriors, replaced the wooden frames of front windows, performed detailed repairs around the walls where they found cracks and other minor things. I was very impressed with the final result. I was very satisfied with their performance. The house recovered its original beauty! Equinox's personnel is detailed oriented, dependable and trustworthy. They are my first choice whenever I need a job to be done right the first time. If you have questions or need to speak with me, please feel free to call me.

We hired Jason because he truly cares about his work. He was a pleasure to work with, maintained good communication, and did an excellent job. He even went the extra mile to put artistic touches on our driveway. The finished result is really lovely, and it completely transformed the look of our home. Even when some aspects of the project hit unexpected snags, Jason was a true pro, and figured out solutions. I recommend Jason for any concrete projects! -Jessica in Sacramento

New Haven Homes did a bathroom remodel for me in early January 2015 which took 5 days for full completion. They did good quality work on the project. They were prompt, courteous, and clean. Their cost was very reasonable -- far better than Home Depot who also quoted the job.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
