Kevin's a six-star handyman in a four-star world. He's come out to help me twice, on several different properties, and it's been a great experience each time. He's communicative about his arrival, does each job carefully, and explains all the options available and their pluses and minuses. I'm definitely going to keep working with Kevin, and I recommend the same for others in the Thumbtack community.

I needed door bolts installed into my doors. The cuts in the doors where measure out correctly and placed perfectly. The latch on the opposite door was perfectly positioned and the door latches in a perfect fit. Harp is punctual and professional. He introduces himself, gets to work quickly. He is meticulous about getting the woodwork perfect and astheticallly pleasing to the eye. Unlike every other handyman I called, Harp answers the phone or will call back within an hour or two. He is available, even into the late hours of the evening. He was available to help me with a 24-48 hour notice. Every other handyman I called either didn't return the call, called back several days later or just outright not available for several weeks out. His prices are reasonable. He will give you an estimate prior to the job and will keep that promised price even if the job becomes difficult. He is also generous. Although he was hired to install doorbolts, he fixed a problem that I had with my door knobs just because he wanted everything to look uniform. Harp is available for work, professional, and does really good work. I will be hiring him again.

Brian was great! Very professional, punctual and responsive. He gave a fair estimate to fix our washer and dryer. When we needed a part he was nice enough to run over to Home Depot. He also showed us how to fix our mini refrigerator even though that was not included in our quote. He likes what he does and is always looking to learn more and that’s why he’s one of the best handyman’s around the area. Thanks Brian!

I was in urgent need for a handyman, as a large part of a wall, insulation & floor in my storage closet was damaged by my leaking water heater. I decided to try Thumbtack and was very happy to see that Arisel from AA Cardenas reached out to me and said he can start work immediately. He was very prompt in replying, and very easy to reach on phone & text before, during and after the work was completed. When he came, he assessed the work to be done, gave me a very clear outline of materials needed and the labor cost. He told me he could finish the work in 2 days, which is exactly what my deadline was, and he did finish all the work in 2 days flat! He offered to go and pick up all the material from the hardware store, and worked till late on the first day to make sure he got as much work done as possible. He was very professional in putting up new insulation, patch sheet rock, applying texture to blend with existing wall texture and paint the area. He always cleaned up before he left and was very open to me asking questions about various things he was working on. Arisel was very nice to talk to as well, and he was accommodating to all my questions. He even came back 4 days later, at my request, to put floor molding. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with the work Arisel did, and would definitely hire him again.

I'm a real person, I work at a tech startup in SF, and just having moved to a new part of the city - didn't feel like assembling furniture AND having to unpack. I had some NON-IKEA, but similar, furniture that needed to be assembled. I had looked at some other popular task sites but they were showing me candidates that didn't exactly look "handyman-capable", and were conveniently charging ridiculous hourly rates. That's when I searched another local list and found Chao's post for "handyman services"; we easily negotiated a fair arrangement and he was able to come that SAME DAY. I was initially nervous waiting for him to arrive but when Chao showed up - I felt like I won the lottery. He brought his own tools and didn't want to waste time on small talk. THIS GUY IS SERIOUSLY A PROFESSIONAL HANDYMAN, & FURNITURE ASSEMBLY SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT. Within his first 5 minutes on site, He took that first furniture box with 1000 pieces and had methodically and systematically placed them in an orderly fashion and quickly began assembly -- paying strict accordance to instructions detail. WHEN CHAO WAS DONE, THERE WERE NO EXTRA OR MISSING PIECES!!! And, even though this furniture was "cheap", it was assembled as best as possible. Chao is an expert. I had some difficult space constraints that he had to work within but he just adapted. He had lots of tricks too, like unfolding the packaging box to protect my floor. Using a piece of cardboard to protect the furniture during hammer-assembly steps, etc... This guy is PROFESSIONAL and I highly recommend him.

Ricardo was our handyman while we lived in Belmont, Redwood City and even when we moved to Alamo, California. He was an excellent carpenter, handyman and Jack-of-all-trades ... always accommodating and cheerful. He was punctual, reliable and very creative in home repair challenges...always thought "outside the box". Ricardo was always a pleasure to have around while working on projects in our homes. We wish we could have taken him with us when we moved to Eagle, Idaho -- we really miss him!!!

Milko was wonderful, professional and detail oriented. In fact, he was the very first person to respond to my post and within a couple of hours, at my door to give an estimate. And even though the job ended up taking an extra three hours of his time, he stuck to the original estimate which is a sign of professionalism and someone I’d hire again and again. Highly recommend Milko Yong!

I appreciate his diligence and integrity! He installed new laundry room cabinets and worked on a minor cabinet door alignment issue until I was satisfied. Installed a new toilet, bathroom vanity light and a 16 lb. dining room flush-mount light. When I had a issue with the new toilet he corrected it immediately. He's now my go-to handyman and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a handyman!

Hired David, very honest in the quote and explained what needed to be done. I needed some baseboards replaced in my foyer, and the baseboards in the living room and dining room needed to be properly installed since my HOA sent their installers and they were terrible (HOA had to replace my hardwoods and the installers laid out the floor fine but baseboards looked terrible). He made a visit and inspected the areas, gave a quote and showed up at scheduled day/time, got to work and a few hours later the place was good to go....great job. I believe he is based in Southbay but covers the entire Bay Area. Any general carpentry/handyman type stuff, that you can't handle or just want to get done, I would recommend him.

We hired Howard to wall mount a bathroom cabinet as well as a few miscellaneous items around our home. He showed up on time and well-prepared with his own tools. He was polite and respectful and made sure to ask exactly where and how we wanted the items mounted. He made quick work of the tasks and was out in a jiffy. We would definitely hire him again for any sort of handyman type work! Thanks, Howard!

Ivan was the first handyman to contact me. He came out to my home on a Sunday to give me a quote. He even arrived early which never happens in this industry. I was happy about that due to my days off are only Sat and Sun. Rates were fair and reasonable. He does excellent work and very professional.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
